View Full Version : We're The Only Plane in the Sky
I found this an insightful piece on the behind the scenes of that awful day.

Late in the afternoon my wife took our two shelties for a walk. When she returned, she said she saw the strangest thing. Three planes flying east and two planes flying from the north meeting up with them and continuing east. I thought a second and told her that I was sure that was Air Force One. The planes from the north would have flying down the middle of Lake Michigan to join the other escorts. We just looked at each other in silence realizing the significance of what she had just seen.
Then there were no planes in the sky for days. Living outside of Chicago, there are almost always planes flying overhead into Midway. Their absence became noticeable.
Reliving this day is not easy.
BTW thanks Ted, great article
I work just a few miles from JFK, the lack of air traffic was very noticeable. We did see some military aircraft at high altitude leaving āSā pattern contrails.

Great read. Thanks for sharing.
Good to see this documented. I think people all too soon forget what it was like in that time, on that day.

I dropped my wife off at O'Hare before going to the gym that morning. She was on a flight en route from Chicago to LA when the attacks happened. They diverted her flight to Denver. Hers was one of the last commercial flights in the air. The office closed, and I went home to our apartment in Evanston. I remember taking a walk near the apartment that afternoon and hearing a fighter jet pass overhead, moving fast. No other sound from the skies that day or for the next several days. Still remember it like it was yesterday.
