Here's the thing about Colin Humperdink. Even if the he hadn't already flunked the "running quarterback in the NFL" test he's demonstrated that he's not a team player. Whether you agree with his political stand or not, there's no question that he created a distraction for the team. If making a political statement is more important to him than maintaining focus on the team then why would anyone want him on their team?

It's interesting that "making a political statement" is the kiss of death for a player, while other issues (drugs, arrests, etc) can be overlooked.
And thank heavens our long national nightmare is over and Brady's Super Bowl jersey has been found. I can sleep tonight. [/sarcasm]

He wasn't the only player. The Patriots had two players make a statement. They've had at least half a dozen say they're not going to the White House, most stating they don't feel welcome there, including the two players who made statements during the national anthem. No one is saying they are distractions or don't put the team first or are not team players.
Kaepernick was the most singled out of all the players who did something during the national anthem. He did it first without drawing any attention to himself. He didn't announce it before hand, he didn't tell the press about it. They picked up on to it a couple games later.
For the most part, skills top issues, but as far as issues go (as noted by TKGAngel), this should be nothing. And his flunking coincided with Harbaugh's departure, which maybe means he can only succeed in one system. It's hard to know what all the teams with QB needs feel about his skills, but it doesn't help that a mountain was made out of a mole hill for him specifically.
Personally, I think it speaks a lot more to his character that he stuck to his beliefs when the easy thing to do was to just stop doing it.
But he didn't even vote in Nov. And now that he's looking for employment, he's indicated he'll not take a knee this coming year. So I question how strongly he's sticking by his beliefs. That doesn't pass the sniff test for me.

I'm not trying to defend him, but I agree as an overarching theme, those two things are counter to the underlying belief. However, he still could have pulled the plug when all the criticism was raining down.

2.) Inso's plot was busted. :gomer: ;)
Colin Kaepernick is a bad QB that's why no one wants to hire him.
He cannot sustain a drive by getting first downs.
He cannot throw the ball. Every pass is a 100 mph fastball that is either way overthrown or in the dirt.
He cannot read a defense and change the play at the line. Whatever was called in the huddle, that's the play no matter what.
He cannot keep track of time.
He cannot win. Once upon a time he went to a Super Bowl and lost. The end.
Whatever his political beliefs, he sucks.
The NFL will forgive anything for results. Kaepernick has no results.

The NFL is considering changes to keep the games moving and reduce the number of breaks. Great news for home viewers as well as our butts in the seats.
Best of all they're considering changing reviews to be via a tablet taken to the referee who will review the play in communication with NFL officiating headquarters in New York. This should improve the time it takes for reviews as well as the consistency.

Lots of talk about that with the MLB as well to shorten games. Lots of peeps not happy with Manfred right now. Testing starting a runner on second base in extras in the minors is not going over well. Bob Iger, President of Disney, recently made comments about reducing the number of commercials. One wonders if he has ever listened to or watched M&M. That show is worse than NASCAB mention junkies with the promos they read on air. :saywhat: Now they have started to cross pollenate with hosts from other shows appearing regularly. :shakehead: Anyway, see the college hoops model...scheduled breaks after 16, 12, 8, and 4 minutes. Works pretty well.

It will be nice if they make it happen, but they have to balance the network's ability to monetize advertising given the huge fees they pay. I don't think it's a proportional relationship between the reduction in advertising minutes to an increase in advertising rates.
I do like them trying to speed up the game and trying to fit breaks in real lulls in play instead of forcing the lulls. Every week we see the offense ready to head out onto the field only to realize a TV timeout was called.
MLB really doesn't have an interest in shortening games until they add a pitch clock.

It's a hot button issue now. A number of issues to address. Replay isn't helping and batters stepping out of the box constantly is #1 on my list. But, I'm an old school baseball fan. If it ain't broke, don't 'fix' it. :)
If they put the replay in the hands of the refs on a tablet, will it work in NE? :gomer: ;)

In my mind the pitch clock applies to the whole time between pitches. Batters need to be ready too, otherwise just award a strike.
The tablets will be wired, they can't risk wireless unless it's all a charade (I know NY will ultimately make the call).

Wired tablets? Don't see how that solves a 'problem' vs. the replay prOn booth. There's also a reason for the booths...so the refs can SEE the replay. Anyone with a smartphone or tablet knows it's dicey viewing in bright sunlight. Last thing I would want to see is a ref guessing because the viewing was impaired. :\

Solves? Nothing. Swing and a miss. Great...so I get a longer period to go take a leak, but it does NOTHING to shorten games. Might as well use the IndyCar/NASCAB model and the run the ads PIP with the games. :\ :irked: :shakehead:

I envision that the ref will still head to the sideline, they'll just bring a wired surface tablet and headset to talk to NY to him. He can position himself to avoid sunlight glare on the screen. They can't risk wireless interference preventing replays from being seen. Otherwise you get:

No surprise there. His presence on the field had become an engraved invitation to throw the ball. He's lost what speed he had and he's not tacking well enough anymore to be worthwhile as a run down specialist.

Have you HEARD Phil Simms?
This is the best football news I've heard in years. Personally, I don't care how bad Romo is in the booth, he will not be as bad as Simms. Simms makes Joe Buck seem tolerable. He makes Dan Dierdorf sound astute. His mortal enemy is allowing sounds of the game to be heard. His favorite pastime is talking about the last play well into the execution of the next one. He cannot pronounce the word Jim (Jeeeem).
Some honest-to-God quotes from Simms' commentary:
"I think it's going to be a run, pass, or maybe not"
"Brown used his eyes to get separation"
"Jim, you asked me a question and I'm going to tell you Le'Veon Bell is going to run the ball." (pregame)
These are a sample of his work from his last two games of 2016.
I'd rather listen to Brett Favre. Do you know me? Do you know what kind of statement that is from me?

Here's my problem with his whole lifestyle/diet. Brady is a QB who is still playing well at 39. He says it's because of that, but there has been no indication that anyone else is doing what he is doing. Brett Favre could've said taking Vicodin and drinking beer gets you playing into your 40s sucessfully. Let's see other people follow your program and also have longevity. How does it translate to other athletes. He was pretty quick to say Tiger would've benefited from it in an interview. Bold claim. How about other NFL positions? Brady no longer builds strength through weight lifting. Not sure how that works for other positions.

Well, given his competitive spirit in retiring, I hope he has more drive to be an analyst. They need people with passion. I think too many just get lazy once they're in the job. There really is no good reason to not know every player's name and background on the team. You have 1 week between games to learn what you don't know. I think it would be an incredible job! I wonder if any of the networks do things like having a backup team practice broadcasting a live game. I'd imagine there are many people who could succeed, but not out of the gates. I think I'd have the knowledge, but the practice would be important. Not stepping on your partner, making it seems smooth, no stammering, etc. I don't think on the air is the place to get polished. I imagine most probably work their way up from smaller announcing gigs, while the people with "names" just jump the queue and find out the hard way.

I'd bet Romo "gets to" call 10 or more previously-recorded games as practice this summer. Probably a couple with the Golf Man himself so they develop some sort of chemistry.

Well, they're certainly all in with this story from Sean McManus, Chairman of CBS Sports:
I really go back to Super Bowl XLIX in Phoenix -- New England Patriots vs. Seattle Seahawks. At the NFL Friday night party, David Berson and I happened to run into Tony. We introduced ourselves, we had met each other a couple times before, and I said to Tony, "What do you think about the game?" I didn't realize that I was going to get an audition with Tony for about 10 minutes. He broke down the entire game. What does New England need to do to stop Marshawn Lynch. What should Brady do against that incredibly successful and talented Seahawks secondary. The fact he broke down the game in such an incredible good way for 10 minutes, I walked away from that conversation and said, "Someday that man is going to be a lead analyst for somebody." We didn't know it was going to be CBS, but I had a really strong feeling he was going to be a lead analyst.

Everyone happy with their Draft Day presents? I have mixed feelings about the Bengals pick. Ross is more than a speedster, he has good acceleration and change of direction. He has great potential as weapon in his own right - not just a decoy for AJ Green. They've just had such rotten luck lately with first rounders and injuries that I worry about his fragility.

The Bears paid way too high a price for someone with 572 passing attempts in college. They could have traded down quite a bit and got better players, IMO. Easy to take the best available when probably 10+ starters need replacing. We'll see.

I recall the Bears not too long ago trading away future draft picks to get a QB. They had more need in other positions then than now.
How'd that work out?
I get the importance of that position however there must be an effective O line and receiving corps for any QB to be productive. I'm not sure either is in place for next season.

The Bears paid way too high a price for someone with 572 passing attempts in college. They could have traded down quite a bit and got better players, IMO. Easy to take the best available when probably 10+ starters need replacing. We'll see.
Bears gave the 49ers their 3rd-round pick this year, their 4th-round pick this year and their 3rd-round pick next year to move up one draft spot.
NBC blames the Bears regular season win over the 49ers for their poor draft and says teams should start throwing games to ensure high draft picks. :shakehead:

What NBC forgets is that the 49ers will waste those picks. ;)

Not happy with the Jabrill Peppers pick. Using a 1st round pick in a glorified punt returner, IMO.

Didn't show up against the Buckeyes and ditched his teammates for the Orange Bowl. No thanks.
I guess the Joe Mixon pick is pretty predictable. Mike "Second Chances" Brown strikes again. Fair enough, he did a stupid thing and he's been under the microscope for three years. As Chris Rock says, "There are plenty of reasons to hit a woman: just don't do it."
The good news is that this pick makes it seem certain that they'll be moving on from Jeremy Hill.
The rest was a pretty decent haul. They checked most of the boxes. Only OT seems to be still missing.

I don't think Mixon is the risk that some other Bengals picks/free agency pickups have been over the years.

Bills just fired Whaley and are allegedly letting their scouting staff go as well. Using them for the draft and then letting them go the next morning is just stone cold.

Mixon seems like more of a PR nightmare than a serial abuser, but if he is, no one can say there weren't warning signs. That's the balance with second chances. But I agree, not at all a shocker the Bengals did it.
The Patriots managed to trade every one of their draft picks this year. They even played musical chairs with which 4th round pick to forfeit before the draft. They moved up for 2 guys. I like when they do that because I know they really wanted the player. Versus trading back and waiting to see who is left.
Sorry that Kevin missed this one. "Adam Jones goes on tirade over minor car crash"
Extremely NSFW language:

First of all, I don't think that I'd be any less angry if some nitwit trashed my Miata that way, never mind a Rolls Royce. Second, dismissing damage to four panels and two blown airbags as a "minor car crash" is being a bit coy. Never mind the fact that repairs will cost more than some of our cars are worth.
No harm, no foul. He didn't hurt anyone.
I wonder if the other car was the purple Smart car in the background of his video?
If so, his rage was justified. :p
Seahawks' coach Pete Carroll is looking at all options for a backup QB, including Kaepernick. Bold statement. :p
I am in favor of Kaepernick playing for Seattle. Pete Carroll voluntarily wrapping an anchor chain around his team's neck is OK with me.
Cool day yesterday. As a benefit to season ticket holders the Bengals opened the stadium for a behind the scenes look. We were able to go out on the field and tour the weight room, locker room, and other facilities. No players or coaches around but it was cool to get on the field and see all those locations I've seen in the media.

David Harris joins the Pats. Seemed too logical to not happen.

Zeke suspended 6 games: http://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/20302469/ezekiel-elliott-dallas-cowboys-suspended-six-games
Vontez Burfict suspended three games for being Vontez Burfict and knocking a player down.

I predict that if Burfict ever leaves the Bengals for the Steelers he will become the greatest linebacker who ever lived and, you know, just a good, hard nosed football player.

The NFL has overdone trying to protect players. That's a fact. It's a fact some players despise. But this is the new NFL. It's here to stay. It's not going away, and players are slowly starting to digest this truth.
Players except Burfict.

I think it's over the top. It's clear that his history hurts him. If there's any personal foul for unnecessary roughness or defenseless [insert position here] he's going to probably get suspended. It's partly his fault, but the length of these suspensions is ridiculous. It should be 1 game unless there's some egregiousness to it. It was a legal hit. Unnecessary? Yes in the new context of protecting players. No if it was 15 years ago (I think the ball on this mostly started after Warren Sapp's hit on Chad Clifton).

3 Questions.
1. If Burfict made that hit, is it a flag and is he suspended?
2. Will that become illegal in the near future?
3. Will defenders ever get the same level of protection as offensive players?

1. Probably not a flag, but probably a suspension. That has been mode. Even though Burfict was under a microscope all last season he had (IIRC) just one personal foul. The usual mechanism is that he makes the kind of play that would have SportCenter singing his praises if he was a Steeler or Patriot, the other team stokes (usually) phony outrage over his play in the media, and then complains to the league. The league is happy to have another opportunity to demonstrate how seriously they take safety without alienating a fan base of any significance. They view the event according to the phony outrage narrative and act accordingly.
There's no way I can take this seriously from a league that rationalized away Ryan Shazier spearing Giovonni Bernard in the face with the crown of his helmet. Burfict is faulted for not having the omniscience to know that a player is "not in the play" (even though that has nothing to do with the legality of the hit) while Shazier's potentially crippling hit doesn't break the letter of the rule because he supposedly didn't "line him up" when he ran at him from five yards away and dipped his head.

Some good points in there. Burfict continues to violate the NFL's unwritten, arbitrarily enforced rule against "unnecessary violence." Sure, it was legal but we don't like him and he hit the guy really hard.
I'm not saying that Burfict hasn't earned some of his reputation but Marvin is a pretty reliable indicator on these things. If there's a rule violation he speaks to it up front, if not he spells out why.
Oh by the way, with no cuts before the final preseason game those games seem even more pointless. It's a good opportunity for guys who will likely be on the street next week to put stuff on film and for second and third round rookies to look like heroes destroying weaker competition.

As a Patriots fan, I can tell you they have no player that lays hits. Brandon Meriweather was probably the last one, and he didn't lay hits so much as aim for the head. If Burfict were to become a Patriot, the penalties/suspensions would not stop, but a Steeler... :D

Word. That was outrageous and I couldn't care less about the Bengals, so no homerism.
