I think the Howard quote was more that Hunter-Reay left it so long to go under him. Let's not take the quote out of context.
The crowd was pretty good. Last year was the first I had watched in at least a decade and yes there was some more aluminium across the back side of the track but it was still a much bigger crowd than say Daytona 500. There is still the kernel that could blossom if given the right opportunities.
When Alonso's Honda expired there was a standing ovation and you could hear the crowd on the broadcast. He certainly brought a lot of attention to the race and it reflected really well on F1. He was really competitive and it may well see a few more cameos over the coming years.
The quote was the end of a fairly long, televised interview. Then they showed the pass. Let's just say it didn't look that way to me or the announcers. Not that I think that much of the announcers, mind you.
The crowd was "pretty good" last year? You could hardly move anywhere. It was almost 100% saturation. They meant it when they said it was sold out 3 days before. That meant all the seats and all the standing room from mosh pit in the middle to anywhere with grass. I agree there is a kernel. The organizers added a lot more things around the race this year to engage the local community. Who knows? There is a chance but if they run another race or two like that one, with flying cars and so many yellows, it will be hard. To be honest, I was surprised to see how many people stayed to the end. That, to me, was the most hopeful sign.
