Equifax reached a settlement for the data breach that exposed private data for 150 million consumers. If you're affected you can choose either four years of three-bureau credit monitoring or $125 cash. I was included and claimed $125 since I use Credit Karma for credit monitoring.

Credit Karma has been great. It's not three bureau (Transunion and Equifax only) but it seems to work very well for a free service. They don't provide the insurance or active support options that come with some of the paid services but I think just knowing what's going on makes those less likely to be necessary.

There's a limit to the total cash payout in the settlement and since huge numbers of people are filing for it you might not get the full $125. The number of people getting the free 3-bureau credit service is unlimited. If you go for the cash you take your chances.

Not affected by this but I'm pretty sure the Capital One got me. I await developments.

Good point. But I'm fine with that. I'd rather take a dollar from them than let them get away providing a service that costs them virtually nothing. A credit bureau providing credit protection seems like a classic protection racket to me. "Nice credit rating you got there, pal. It'd be a shame if anything was to happen to it."

Hacker ID'd as former Amazon employee steals data of 106 million people from Capital One (https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2019/07/feds-former-cloud-worker-hacks-into-capital-one-and-takes-data-for-106-million-people/?comments=1)

SMH - not sure if the breached data was actually monetized, just breached because it could be maybe.

Did you have the supporting documents they say you need to file?

As I read it, if you're only opting for the flat cash payment in lieu of credit monitoring you just certify that you have credit monitoring and that's it. Additional documentation is only for if you're claiming additional losses from the breach. The electronic form I filled out didn't request anything else.

Now I'm being told that there at least 4 bogus sites that want the last six of your social. That is what the link above asked for. Did I go down the rabbit hole by clicking on it? :gomer:

I agree completely. Everybody (but me) should do the credit monitoring option. I'll take my $0.17 check and continue to use Credit Karma.

The story says that the Equifax service is a "$20 per month value" which would mean that Equifax is prepared to give out $147 Billion in value. Like I said, it's a racket. This settlement conveniently lets Equifax get away with a relatively small cash outlay while letting the air out of the market for their competitors for years to come.

Just got the email - got my SIN. They're offering two years free of credit monitoring and insurance. I'm sure that if I agree and sign up I waive my rights.
