I have wanted to go to this event for so long... sadly it looks like I'll have to pass again this year. I am still working on making it up for the ALMS weekend though.

Of course. I'll be an Augie groupie. Has become my favorite "race" weekend of the year for awhile now. You people who seem so addicted to the sound of the turbo Champcar engines should treat yourselves to all the sound variety on THIS weekend! What strikes me most is how utterly unsafe many of these cars look, some just a few years old. Newer IS better in that vein! I'm taking my Surtees Can Am pics from '66 in hopes the Man himself will like to see/have/sign some! When they call it "Can Am Thunder", they MEAN it! Sweet sounds. I like it because the meet spans my entire life as a race fan, beginning with Augie's Scarab. It's also about the parade from the track to Siebkens, the concours, the auction (in the past), and after YEARS of sleeping under plastic tarps in the open, along gravel road ditches, in pup-tents through thunderstorms, in Corvairs, Celicas and Preludes (great campers, huh?)...THIS year, thanks to my cousin's generous and comparatively well-heeled brother-in-law, we get to "camp" in a 3 bedroom condo at the Osthoff Lodge and pretend we actually deserve to be there! We leave in 6 hours and I plan to enjoy the total experience!

Chopper! Now, wasn't that fun!!? I know there is a real narrow audience for this topic and I don't want to come off as one of those "name dropper" fans but I have to say a few things about the weekend that was just an an old race fan's dream! My cousin (and his brother-in-law) connections paid off with a lot more than just posh accomodations at the Osthoff. We had dinner reservations Fri. at the Lake Street Cafe at 7,(after the race car parade arrived and parked in the street around Siebkens) As we were escorted through the cafe to the "dining room", it was obvious we were in a place with a whole different atmosphere. We were seated between the tables where John Surtees and Brian Redman were dining with a bunch of Ford, Jaguar, and Road and Track people! Very interesting to evesdrop on some of the conversation! Around 9 the race cars were getting a police escort back to the track and half the room got up to go to the window and watch. The man behind me was commenting on some of the cars and as I turned to tell him to watch for those Trans Am Mustangs (2,3&39), because they always impress with a tail-out, wheel-spinning power slide as they head out of town up to Rt. 67,..and there, standing with his glass of wine was Mr. Redman! It was great. We ended up having a 10min. conversation about racing, mostly historic, and mostly about Jim Hall and the F-5000 years. Great stuff! He asked us questions about our years at RA, etc. He was a a most polite, gracious and entertaining man to talk to. He then introduced us to John Surtees, who thanked us for coming. I honestly think they thought we were part of the race committee, or something! To cap things off, when we finished looking at the cars at the Mecum auction, we shared the elevator at the Osthoff with Mr. Surtees and one of his family, not sure who. He said he was enjoying his stay and was very impressed with the turnout at the track on a Friday. Turns out his room was directly across from ours! ANYway, wasn't it great to see and hear some of those great old cars? Oh, also was introduced to Bob McKee by a friend of mine who used to own a '66 Can Am McKee Olds, remember it, #13? Bob was helping a guy assemble a trans-axel for that blue/white '64 McKee Plymouth...he still gets his hands dirty after all these years...I suppose he'll always feel a connection to those racecars he built. Loved the sound of those F-1 Ferraris, and that guy drove the wheels off the ex-Villeneuve Champcar, too, eh? Great fun. Be there next year, maybe we CAN hook up!

Sounds like you had a great time! We did too, though no elbow-rubbing with the rich and famous. ;)

Too bad the only time I ran into you was when we both had armloads of food to contend with, I'd really like to have a sit-down with someone who knows some of the history of the area and the track itself.

I have most of my pics posted now, but I haven't captioned them yet. I'm going to try and do it tonight. I've enlisted some friends to help with the identification of the cars, and they're WAY more knowledgeable than I am, so that's been a big help.

Wow... I had no idea they had that much of a mix at this thing. I'm puttin this one on my "to do" list as well. I hear the Leini(sp?) supply is at it's peak during July, too... what a coincidence!

Depending on what CART wants to do with mid-ohio, that suggestion is a very real possibility. :confused:

If I build a small, one room addition on to your crib, will you put up with me from the BRIC weekend thru the ALMS weekend, Chop???

Sweet pics Chop. We have a lot of similar shots. I wonder why? :D I'm going to put mine up tonight... and I won't even embarass myself trying to identify them.

This event was so cool. My only regret was that I didn't go all 3 days (I only went Sunday with Chop).

I'm thinking a season pass might be in the cards for me next year too.... any chance we can make that extension big enough for 2 beds and a keg fridge? :cool: :p

Warlock, I appreciate the addition offer, but I'd like to finish the current project first. D'oh! I could use a nice shed/hiding place in the back yard though.

Awwww....you guys are KILLIN' me! Great pics Chop/Crap...ain't it FUN? Have to tell you, I had to force myself to leave the "good" camera at home this year, took the little AF Olympus for paddock only stuff. My wife asked me why I have 47 pictures of the same car, and she's right...I'm NUTS! Never know when a "new" one will appear, though...I was hoping to see that restored Chaparral MkI in Meister Brauser team colors lapping with Augie's Scarab. Maybe next year? Once again, any of you CART only turbo-types need to hear one of those 510 ci McLaren M8Fs or watch Craig Bennet in that Ex-Peter Revson Lola T-222. These are serious racers out there and RA is a living museum that weekend! Treat yourselves to the BRIC next year and you'll be hooked! Looking at your pictures put the weekend smiles back on my face, THANKS... now I have to wait for my allowence to get MY rolls out of hock over at Osco! (I see a digital somethingorother in my near future!)...PS, just made your 512 shot my new wallpaper, thanks again!

Its a pretty inexpensive camera actually... Minolta F100 Dimage. 4.0 Megapixel camera that can be purchased for less than $350. :thumbup: Took awhile getting used to... but I'm getting there. :D

I've captured much faster moving Ferraris with the same camera though. :D
