Are you ready for some football?
Just when I think that the Antonio Brown saga is reaching the peak schadenfreude he gets signed by the Patriots. Now there's a non-zero chance that he'll continue his antics there and we'll reach schadenfreude nirvana. But there's also a chance that he'll stop being a diva long enough to collect a Super Bowl ring just to show that everyone was wrong. That would suck.
Meanwhile, I'm not encouraged by the Bengal's preseason performance. The defense looked decent and may be able to keep them in games but the Bengals have failed to address their offensive line problems and that doesn't bode well. Mixon looks set to have a breakout season and Dalton can get the ball out quick if they can get people open. But I'm not confident that the line can give them the space to get the job done. Kudos to Taylor if he can get it done with this lineup.

I picked the Packers over the Bears last Thursday. That is all. Thank you for reading this important message. (Probably the only one of its kind this season since I really only follow the Rams. Ugh, I can't believe I'm following the Rams. double ugh)

If things continue this way, Cleveland's inexorable march to the Super Bowl might include a road game in the playoffs. Surprising, but a 15-1 record is the sort of thing that champions overcome.

Gotta say the Bengals looked better than I expected today. Dalton had a career game even if he's still sometimes challenged to get balls over the D-line. Unfortunately the O-line still can't move anyone out in the running game so now that opponents have some tape things are going to get harder unless they can improve up front.
Ravens looked impressive. It looks like the only thing that can stop the Patriots this season is Antonio Brown. :D

Nice catch, Hamilton. Good gravy.
Calling in a welfare check on Wickerbill. That was not pretty.

This never would have happened with Trevor Siemian.
I post that and then Paulie G tries orchestrate one of his classic end of half defensive meltdowns. Too bad the Broncos couldn't get the ball back.

All other things being equal, had Ol' Butterfingers held on to that ball, it would have been 24-20.

Even though it blew my contrarian pick for Houston, the last few minutes of that NO/HOU game were some of the most exciting we'll see this year, I think. Talk about "it ain't over til it's over."
Ummm.... it's early in the season?
Yes! Still hope for everyone! You know we wish you nothing but the best. By which I mean a loss to the Bengals in the AFC Championship. This seems roughly as likely from either angle, truthfully.
Poor Jets fans. Sam Darnold has the kissing disease. Dood. No gurlz allowed during the season.

Does this mean I should switch my pick to Cleveland? ????? Decisions, decisions.
Ugh. That was ugly. The Bengals looked just as bad as last year. Now it's all on film and there's no tricksies. No magical 4D Chess moves from offensive mastermind Zac Taylor can solve the fact that they didn't do enough to solve the Offensive line problem last year.
The defense is a bit more of a puzzle. They have some talent on the line and secondary but they went from looking dominant to laughing stocks in one week.

Apparently yes. LOL. Meh, I was too busy to get back to it.
In other news, I have decided that in order to preserve my sanity with PoolHost, the last 30 seconds of the game should not be played. :yuck: This week, Denver
When I was seeing the scores during the Bengals game I was sure that I was going to end up at the bottom of the rankings again. :D

I was too. The only difference is, I was right.
Since this is the NFL thread, not the Pool Host thread, I'll add that the games I've watched have seemed awfully sloppy. Do you suppose it's because the teams have taken to holding their starting players out of pre-season? I mean, for at least the first half if not more, it LOOKS like pre-season used to.

Is Jacksonville that good or is Tennessee that bad? Doesn't seem like either is possible.
Raiders' Vontaze Burfict suspended for rest of season (https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/27735755/sources-oakland-raiders-lb-vontaze-burfict-facing-ban-rest-2019-helmet-helmet-hit)
I guess that answers the question on whether the change of scenery would rehabilitate him. Dude never did figure out how to tackle with his head up. He should retire before he ends up paralyzing himself of someone else.
Rumor has it that next year the Bengals will look to upgrade to a two-ply offensive line. :flaming:

I've probably complained about this before, but why aren't teams more prescriptive about using their alternate uniforms?
Today it's the Bengals. They're wearing their superior orange jersey, but they chose to wear it against a team that wears red. Why? Contrast is terrible. They have TWO teams in their division that wear black. They also have the Jags at home. That would look way better. And the Jets. And the Patriots.
A couple years ago Denver wore their alternate blue against... the Cowboys. Could have worn them against the Chiefs, Redskins, or Bengals... and they chose Dallas.
Stupid.
I need to be in charge of what jerseys are worn for every game.
I need to be in charge of what jerseys are worn for every game.
I'd vote for that if you could also make sure that the Buckeyes never wear their stupid all black costumes again. Ever.
The Bengals made the dumbest uniform decision ever in wearing their all-black PJs in the home opener for what was the hottest game in ages. I'd have done away colors for that and black/white against the Cardinals today. Then orange creamsicle against the Jags in two weeks.

Next week's games, if I made the rules:
Giants (white) at Patriots (blue)
Panthers (black or teal) at Bucs (red)
Redskins (red) at Dolphins (aqua)
Saints (white) at Jaguars (black or teal alt)
Bengals (orange) at Ravens (black)
Seahawks ("blue") at Browns (orange)
Eagles (white) at Vikings (purple)
Texans (blue) at Chiefs (red)
Falcons (white) at Cardinals (red)
49ers (red) at Rams (throwback blue)
Titans (light blue) at Broncos (orange)
Cowboys (white) at Jets (green)
Steelers (white) at Chargers (dark or powder blue)
Lions (white) at Packers (green)
Are you eliminating the limit on the number of times that a team can wear their alternates each season?

I'm eliminating that rule, and the color vs color rule, and the one-shell rule, because I'm choosing based on the matchup, every game. Well, sort of. The home team picks their choice, and they only get vetoed if they're stupid, like Denver wearing blue against Dallas.

Broncos wearing navy against.... Tennessee. Dumb.
Still in it. Still time to to turn this around. Maybe I'll hit the field this weekend and make it happen. Because nobody knows how to solve the problems of an NFL franchise better than the average NFL fan with a little high school football and no experience in coaching or ownership.

Well, we gave it our best shot, but the Bengals' cheerleaders had a stouter line than the Bengal players today.

This was the Bengals "Fantennial Weekend" which is marketing speak for "please don't cancel your season tickets." Among other events they had 100 of their longest running season ticket holders on the field for intros. It was a good time and the Bengals defense kept the game competitive today until the offense switched from failing to score points to giving away points in the fourth quarter. :yuck:

Emmanuel Sanders plus a 5th rounder to the Niners for a 3rd and 4th.
Ugh.
Anyone know if Belichick told the press that they were "On to Cincinnati" after their loss to the Chiefs?

Way-too-early thoughts on Drew Lock:
He's got the ability to be a poor man's Russel Wilson. That's no insult, as he's played two games and is light years better than Flacco was. However, he is going to need a different OC - that run out to a huge lead against Houston and then basically nothing in the second half wasn't because Houston adjusted as much as it was Denver went Schottenheimer-level conservative.
I'm optimistic that with him and our defense, we can be an 8-9 win team next year.
Meanwhile I'm hoping the Bengals can get a #1 QB and afford to sit him behind Dalton until he's ready.
I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around Joe Burrow because in my world he left OSU as a backup behind guys who aren't NFL starters. But I see the film and I've seen some plays that look Favre-like.
I'm just hoping that they can turn things around enough next season that I can get face value for our extra tickets again. :irked:

Boom! #1 pick secured. No excuses now.

Why you gotta kill my joy? :gomer:
Happy to see the Bengals close out with a win since it didn't impact their draft order. Plus Browns fans start to get saucy if they've won over you a couple of times. :gomer:
Looking at the big NFL Draft tryouts on Saturday I have to say that Burrow did everything to his gap on the field while Chase Young seemed to have little impact.
Great games on Saturday. Sorry to see the Buckeyes lose but both teams played great games and it really came down to just a handful of plays.
Ohio is considering whether long-suffering Browns or Bengals fans can be treated with medical marijuana (https://www.cnn.com/2020/01/09/us/ohio-browns-bengals-marijuana-spt-trnd/index.html)
The State Medical Board of Ohio is officially considering a petition that asks Cleveland Browns or Cincinnati Bengals fandom be considered a qualifying condition to legally obtain medical marijuana.

Vikings - Niners: "This was a fun game to watch."
Titans - Ravens: "Wow, what an upset!"
Texans - Chiefs: "Nice. Oh my. WOW! Holy crap it's a rout! Well. Oh my. Dude what the heck. Are you kidding? What am I watching here?"

this losing bet made possible by Fidelity's new "margin accounts for sportsbooks" product
I went into the playoff on the Burrow fence since I hadn't seen that much of him this season and I only knew him as a Buckeye backup. Now it's obvious that it's a slam dunk choice for the Bengals. They can't lose. Even if Burrow tanks, nobody can say that it was the wrong pick. In fact, fans are so set on this pick that the Bengals would be insane to make any other pick. They've lost the fan base and Burrow is the only hope of gaining them back.
Great Super Bowl. The Niners defense swarmed the whole game and it looked like it might win the game for them. But the Chiefs offense kept hammering away. It just felt like the Niners defense ran out of steam first and then the Mahomes and the Chiefs were able to work their magic.

I don't even really have anything in my football memory to compare these Chiefs to.
As I saw it, they took a little more time than usual to figure out what the Niners were doing and how to defeat it, but once they figured it out, TD, TD, TD. I think they could have scored on ten straight drives.
This is exactly what they did against Houston, and Tennessee - both significantly inferior squads to San Francisco. When you're watching them play, you're lulled to sleep and suddenly they're absolutely on fire, can't miss, overcoming penalties, double-covered receivers running free...
If you're a neutral, they're brilliant fun to watch. "When are they going to explode? 'Cause they're gonna explode."
Really happy for Andy Reid and the Hunt family. I should have some ribs in their honor tonight. Good job, AFC West.
Really happy for Andy Reid ya.
Kyle Shanahan and Super Bowls tho...
