View Full Version : Your new truck is here
Musk has been smoking with Joe Rogan again. :saywhat: The new Tesla Cybertruck is here and it's... weird.

Will truck buyers go for this? The looks are next level ugly but I suspect that has to do with the stainless steel "exoskeleton". The bed seems small and impractical but so do the beds on a lot of four door trucks.
While the "unbreakable glass" demo was a debacle I have to admit that it was funny seeing this ugly thing dragging an F150 like a truculent toddler that doesn't want to leave the toy aisle. A week after Ford trashed their Mustang brand Musk showed them that "innovation" doesn't mean building a weak clone of the competition and adding a Mustang grill and tail lights.

The kicker is the coveted 500 mile range. A full day's drive. That's EV nirvana.

It really looks like a bad Hot Wheels design. It's just terrible.

it's pretty much everything I despise about Musk/Tesla/SpaceX rolled into one.

Elon Musk says Tesla has received 146,000 orders for the Cybertruck since its reveal (https://www.cnn.com/2019/11/23/cars/cybertruck-tesla-preorders/index.html)
Here’s why the Tesla Cybertruck has its crazy look (https://techcrunch.com/2019/11/22/heres-why-the-tesla-cybertruck-has-its-crazy-look/)
Interesting
Sadly Kevin (Dando) isn't with us any longer to throw in a solid Disney reference, so I'll take up the mantle.
It looks like it was designed by a kid in the queue for Test Track in Epcot.

That really is interesting, and answers a question I've long had about that ugly Ridgeline. :)

Great take down of it from the organ of Australian motoring, Wheels:
The first, and most obvious, part of the Cybertruck that needs to change before it can be sold to the public is the lack of side mirrors. Currently it is illegal to sell a vehicle without side mirrors in the United States.
Then there is the absence of a third brake light, which like the side mirrors would need to be rectified before the vehicle goes on sale.
In certain images, it appears that the tyres on the Cybertruck protrude outside the fenders, which is illegal in some countries, including Australia.
Other basic functions, like side indicators, and windshield wipers, are also missing.

When I looked at it again later I noticed the 2wd issue. I also noticed that they seemed to let the Tesla take up the slack and then started the test at the instant it was taken up - essentially giving the Tesla a rolling start.
As usual Musk was going for the viral result rather than the best test. The challenge for the Ford is that in any test it needs to get rolling while the Tesla makes its torque immediately.
That tug of war is really more a competition of traction not power.
Elon Musk promises Cybertruck vs. Ford F-150 rematch after controversy
(https://www.theverge.com/2019/11/26/20983450/cybertruck-ford-f-150-tug-of-war-unfair-challenge)
Really, though, Musk can’t lose in this sort of a competition. The market for pickups in the US is deeply loyal, with customers generally sticking to one of a handful of brands, including Ford’s F-series and Fiat Chrysler’s Ram trucks. If Tesla is going to make in-roads here it needs to be as visible as possible, so a little bit of chest-thumping can’t hurt.
Even if the Cybertruck lost in a re-match, Musk could say that Tesla will improve the vehicle before it starts rolling off assembly lines (scheduled for 2022). Better still, he could demand a tug-of-war against Ford’s own upcoming electric F-150, which is currently in the works. Now that would be “apples to apples.”
Then there’s this....
Ford backs off Tesla Cybertruck tug-of-war rematch challenge, but Musk is doing it anyway (https://www.foxnews.com/auto/ford-no-tesla-cybertruck-tug-of-war-rematch)
If this is done with comparably configured trucks, they should indicate the sticker price for each.

What will it look like when it is street legal? You know, headlights, turn signals, rear view mirrors, windshield wipers, 2.5mph bumpers etc.

Ha. The wheelbase on that CyberTruck is going to cause owners a lot of grief if they don't trim it down some.

In response to "those mirrors will never work" someone posted this image.

So it appears they're relying on cameras. Which technically may not be legal right now, but Tesla isn't the only manufacturer looking to replace mirrors with cameras. Given the benefits for both pedestrian safety and energy efficiency it seems likely that they will be approved in relatively short order.

Of course the Hammerhead Eagle i-Thrust had them beat on the low poly styling by a decade. Of course it was technically a plug-in hybrid, but still.
