Well, that was... ummm.... interesting.

Congrats to Ocon.
Bottas only got 5 places next race. I see alot of bitching coming about that one.
Alonso gets driver of the day for holding up Hamilton.

The start looked like an Iracing start, just trying to survive T1.

Congratulations to the reincarnation of Ayrton Senna on getting his first win. Though to be fair he probably owes 1/3 of the win to Valterri for punting most of the contenders in the first corner, 1/3 to the Mercedes Strategy Team for starting Hamilton on Intermediates after the red flag, and 1/3 to his teammate Alonso for holding Lewis up for many laps during Hamilton's subsequent charge through the field.

Also, a solid foundation weekend leading into he last Summer Break before he claims his rightful throne at Mercedes for George Russel. His drive, work ethic, and tenacity showing that he's truly deserving of the Mercedes ride saw him get knocked out of Q1 for the first time al year, and get shown up by his Williams teammate during the race. I don't know how you look at that performance and claim it was anything but solid.

I posted in feedback to merge the 2 threads. I jumped into chat at the start, since I saw you online here, but didn't make a chat call thread. Just got up, tired and sore and the place still is a mess. I spent the middle part of the race putting up pictures, and cleaning out boxes. :)

Only thing to add to what’s already been said is the I’ve never seen HAM so exhausted after a race. Thought that was odd.

Great race for Al Peen.

Odd that there was a safety car period and he still didn't have enough fuel. Usually if there's a SC that's sufficient opportunity for fuel saving that it's not an issue. Still sucks for Seb regardless.

Not sure I've ever seen one driver successfully take out two entire teams' worth of cars before. That was like a billiards trick shot.

Seems he's worried about long haul Covid effects. https://racer.com/2021/08/01/hamilton-fears-lingering-covid-effects-after-struggling-on-podium/

Greg Moore, Portland 1998. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R78YAybEyUE)

Of course, the difference being that Valterri was dealing with intermediate wet conditions on a greasy rubbered-in track from a standing start with only a sighting lap to pick out braking markers. Whereas Greg had a rolling start in the clean and dry after running a morning warm-up session.

A a huge Greg Moore fan I think what was particularly disappointing is that they had just placed Tracy on probation for aggressive driving and made it clear to the other drivers that they were going to start coming down much harder. So after almost wiping out his teammate on the start, Moore had a chance to back out of it, get on the binders, and settle in for a long race. But instead he decided to press the issue and try and pass the entire field on the opening lap gong down into the Festival curves.

I get that he felt the Season title slipping away to Zanardi and he wanted to make something happen, but that's no excuse for complete boneheadedness. Especialy given the race's preamble. I know it's bad to disparage the dead, but that wasn't an aggressive move - that was stupidity (particularly given that he could have backed out of it after just about dusting Carpentier). Unfortunately I lost a fair bit of respect for Greg that day.

Has American open wheel exceeded what was in 1998? I don’t think so.

I was there that day in C3, right smack in front of the festival curves. Not Greg's finest hour.

I give Bottas the tiniest bit of slack, on a greasy track with cold tires and Lando taking a chunk of the air off of his front wing- going back through the replays, by the time the car settled down Bottas didn't have more than a brief window when he could have safely got on the brakes, and he blew it. His mistake, absolutely, but it wasn't unbridled aggression or anything beyond being in the wrong place at the wrong time with a hair too slow reaction time. I'm no fanboy, but I think the five place penalty has more to do with the amount of hardware taken out than the actual level of misdeed.

Is there a more soul-crushing job anywhere than being Valtteri Bottas? I doubt it.

Mark Webber, Pierre Gasly, Alex Albon, Sergio Perez.

At least Valtteri's team bosses don't complain about him every single week. In fact they never do.

Nah, none of those guys are even close. If you had said Felipe Massa or Rubens Barrichello, then you'd be onto something.

Regarding the team never complaining about Bottas, perhaps you forgot that Dorthy's faithful 4-legged companion promptly threw Valtei squarely under the bus (https://www.planetf1.com/news/toto-wolff-valtteri-bottas-wheel-nut) for the machined wheel nut incident earlier this year.

After things landed on the other side of the rainbow and Valteri was shown to be clearly in the right, Wolff had to promptly walk those comments back (https://www.planetf1.com/news/toto-wolff-denies-valtteri-bottas-blame/).

Certainly an odd way to repay your faithful lieutenant who ha been 110% loyal to your cause.
