There’s a sign on the wall of the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority’s meeting board room that describes its mission: “To attract visitors by promoting Las Vegas as the world’s most desirable destination for leisure and business travel.”
LVCVA President and CEO Steve Hill referenced the sign when he brought to the board an extraordinary request — to approve spending $7 million to purchase and hand out tickets to customers to attend November’s Formula One Las Vegas Grand Prix.

I spent a very entertaining hour this morning listening to the Sr. Director of Leisure Sales from the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority describing the offerings for the upcoming F1 race. She was darned good describing the packages that cost $100,000 and up and some that were $2,000. She maintained that there is still something available because new areas are being developed all the time. This seems possible since she admitted that they were "surprised" at how fast the GA tickets, ALL tickets, went on June 6 when sales were opened to the general public. Basically, it's one very long and curvy F&B and entertainment-filled mosh pit. The most interesting thing she said was that U2 is going to be in residency at The Sphere.
Then there was a great article by Jenna Fryer in today's paper about how Americans will quickly tire of a race where there is no race. How the Drive to Survive year was an anomaly so it's basically boring (she didn't exactly way it that way). Born out by plummeting attendance at Miami and Houston except for the bump created by the TV show.

Yeah, Phil Collins is another example. He quit drumming after an injury back in '07. The progressive degeneration had him sitting down for the Genesis farewell tour and now he's really having trouble getting around.
And it’s Larry Mullen. Actually Larry Mullen Jr to be precise.

This is the full statement received by News 3:
“Liberty Media and F1 have made a long-term investment to race in Las Vegas. We want the local community to benefit from our event, and we are confident that the race will bring tremendous economic value to Las Vegas as a whole. F1 commonly executes licensing agreements to protect its intellectual property rights, and the Las Vegas Grand Prix is following this same approach. In addition, these arrangements allow the Las Vegas Grand Prix to ensure the fan experience in its partner venues meets the expectations for this event.”

Las Vegas taxi surcharge during Formula 1 Grand Prix
Last week the Taxicab Authority Board approved a pilot program that would put a temporary surcharge of $15 to all fares that originate or end in existing tiered flat rate zones that operate along the airport/resort corridor. Zone 1 is from Sunset North to Tropicana and would cost $37. Zone 2 is from Tropicana North to Flamingo and would cost $41. Zone 3 is from Flamingo North to the STRAT and would cost $45. That surcharge is scheduled to be in place from Wednesday, Nov. 15 at noon through Tuesday, Nov. 21 at noon.
According to the board's five-member panel, the surcharge was necessary to encourage "full workforce participating by permitted taxicab drivers to provide adequate services to the traveling public during the period surrounding the Las Vegas Formula 1 Grand Prix." :tony:

I"m calling the Goldilocks Syndrome. One race is too hot; one race is too cold. Buncha whiners.
Head of Pirelli is concerned.
"Las Vegas is a step into the unknown, for everyone I think. Las Vegas will be cold, it's a street circuit. That's why we worked with the teams and asked them in advance for simulations to try to understand how much energy the layout of the track puts on the tires. We got information from the companies that make the asphalt to understand how the asphalt works. But there are still a lot of question marks at Las Vegas.
"We obviously can't change the weather, we can't raise the temperature. It could be a challenge to keep the temperature in the tire. So we decided to promote grip by using the three softest compounds in the pool. I can imagine a lot of track evolution and little grip. So the teams will complain! That's fine. We will also deal with this situation. But it's an unknown leap of faith. A fast track, long straights, high speed and all conditions that are difficult to manage."
https://www.si.com/fannation/racing/f1briefings/news/f1-news-pirelli-faces-unprecedented-challenge-with-softest-tires-for-las-vegas-and-abu-dhabi-sj4
I did read it’s not to be as cold at night next weekend. Although 50 at race time is not optimal. I’ve read that Firestone wants the combination of track and air temperatures to be at least 100 for IndyCar, so maybe Pirelli’s concern is legit. In 1992 the highest temperature during the race was 58. Might be comparing apples to oranges though.

Sorry, formatting didn’t work well. But you get the idea. The first practice on street circuits or newly paved tracks are always sketchy as they aren’t ‘rubbered in’ then. Lots of sunshine will help. But it will have set several hours before the race starts.

I guess it's a lot of hedging bets going on... I mean they've done pre-season testing in Spain in temps at or below freezing before... With Pirelli rubber so... I don't really get what all the fuss is about...
I mean it was snowing during the first pre-season testing in 2018 at Circuit de Barcelona (Catalunya)!!

Head of Pirelli is concerned.
he should be. But it has nothing to do with Vegas.
Pirellis have been quite crap all year. Culminating (so far) where a race was only allowed 18 laps per tire. You know, the same thing Michelin got slaughtered for at Indy but the difference now is they didn't have a tyre competitor.
Just looked up, under contract till 2027, with an option for 2028.
so he's got time to fix it.

he should be.
Pirelli always claims to build the tires to the spec requited by the FIA. So, lots of deg, as intended. Gotta encourage those pit stops, it's about the only way passes get made.

Formula 1’s much-anticipated inaugural Las Vegas Grand Prix will be a “jump into the unknown”, according to Pirelli, as very cool temperatures and long straights may potentially deform the tyres.

Ticket prices slashed as much as 60% for some of the days ahead of Saturday night’s race are only a small part of the behind-the-scenes heartburn. Locals were infuriated by the daily disruptions caused by construction of the 3.85-mile (6.2 kilometer) street circuit that utilizes a large portion of the Strip while highlighting several Las Vegas landmarks with a 17-turn layout that’s been likened to a " flying pig.”

Approximately 3 times the hours typical at other races, easier to do when there are no support races.

These are included in the Paddock Club pass. F1 was selling them for $20K-$30K per ticket.

Besides her straight on comment that it was never about building the American fan base, my favorite quote is, "There are fresh concerns as to how casino employees will get to work once the Strip is closed so Max Verstappen can win another race in a season where he long ago clinched the championship." Double whammy criticism. I love it.

I saw that earlier, Valterri has a great sense of humor. Even more so considering he’s Finnish.
