F1 - 2023 LAS VEGAS GRAND PRIX - THURSDAY PRESS CONFERENCE TRANSCRIPT
https://www.fia.com/news/f1-2023-las-vegas-grand-prix-thursday-press-conference-transcript
A rather emotional press conference. As you can imagine Vasseur is pissed. I never read these but this one is extremely interesting.
Silly me stayed up late to watch live. What struck me was the way the live TV coverage harkened back to the bad old days of Fred Nation and crew over at IMS.
While the TV crew wondered what had happened, a helicopter shot of the strip showed a large number of officials and their vehicles gathered on the track behind where the Ferrari stopped. After that shot, they never returned to any shot of the track, or the workers, and instead speculated that a "bump" caused the car to give the "stop now" message. When the message came that practice was cancelled, they still seemed quite confused about what could have happened.
Hilariously, they were able to zoom in on the Bellagio Fountains, but not on that section of the track. Or the workers. And had no video besides the onboard that showed nothing but a thump. The car put on quite a show, and there should have been no mystery.

I turned on TSN this morning at 5:30am EST to catch up on all sports in general and was surprised to see the drivers getting ready to out for FP2. Props to TSN for sticking with the coverage till the end. Weird to see F1 cars blasting through the streets of Vegas at 3:00am local time with empty grandstands.

Q was entertaining. I’m quite pleased with Williams placing both in Q3 and surprised that McLaren couldn’t get out of Q1. But Brown didn’t seem all that disappointed. Red cars are fast. SAI could be fun to watch. This is a very fast track, and big. If/when they get spread out it will seem empty.

I'll give them this. They got it off and on tv, it looked like a decent race, and the views were amazing.
The track’s design is well suited for these cars. Not overly technical, in fact very little of that. Allowed the cars to stretch their legs. I was afraid the field would have gotten too stretched out. The few safety cars helped keep them all close. Lots of decent racing with the mid packers. And for a change, action at the front. It was slick, especially at the beginning. Tire management/wear really hampered Williams. The race held my interest throughout.
One of the better races of the season after the drain issues were addressed. A couple really interesting sections for passing and long straights for speed. A track greater than a twisty 2.5 mile glorified go kart circuit allows the cars to show their speed which should be what F1 is all about. For those in attendance... with the cost of tickets so high, I'd expect some support races. The glitz & glam, deal with it. That said, lose Bieber & danica.

F1 drivers say oil on track created "unacceptable" conditions at Las Vegas GP start
https://www.autosport.com/f1/news/f1-drivers-say-oil-on-track-created-unacceptable-conditions-at-vegas-gp-start/10548922/
Carlos Sainz, who started 12th owing to a 10-place grid penalty for changing the control electronics package aboard his Ferrari after his car was heavily damaged from hitting a water valve cover in FP1, reckoned the oil was responsible for him sliding into Lewis Hamilton into Turn 1 and spinning.
Not the first time this has happened. I’m pretty sure this happened once before an Indy 500 also.

He hit a bump and his car bottomed out losing grip going into a braking zone. Hard hit. Glad he’s ok.
Probably the only bump on the circuit.

The scenery was spectacular and the track wasn't bad for a street race. It may take eight weeks to get everything torn down but how long before they re-open the strip?

His attendance figures for European races are bull... the only races with less attendance in Europe are Monaco (paid attendance, still a lot of ppl viewing from the mountainsides) and Baku if you count Azerbaijan as part of Europe...
British GP: 480k
US GP (COTA): 432k
Belgian GP: 380k
Dutch GP: 305k
Italian GP: 304k
Austrian GP: 304k
Hungarian GP: 304k
Spain GP: 284k
Miami GP: 270K
Australian GP: 445k
Singapore GP: 264k
Japanese GP: 222k
Mexican GP: 400k
EDIT: And my humble opinion as a eurocentric racing "snob" - the race surprised me a lot! The FP sessions and that Qualy was very ho-hum and tbh I'd rather watch them racing one of the extremely fine proper tracks in the US... and it would've been cool to see them blast past the Bellagio fountain if it weren't for the walls/fences/lighting stuff... sure all that is also prevalent at Monaco but I guess it's that circuits rather slow nature that allows it to still have that sense of history going waayyy back that still makes in an enjoyable race for me even though the racing there basically sucks. That is in danger however due to their large building projects reclaiming land from the ocean thus removing one of the dramatic features of Monaco.
What I missed the most from the images from LV GP was seeing ppl in the stands as the stands were so dark... even though that did bring the with it the added positive feature of less camera time for close ups of said fans in the stands...
LV GP is here to stay... just have it at a decent time of day for the ppl in the states!
Now if we could only replace Miami and its fake marina and ridiculous s-curve before the long straight with an upgraded Road America (before you jump all over me, it is possible to bring a track up to FIA standards without using Tilke! Look at Zandvoort)
F1 Las Vegas GP debuts with 1.3 million despite timeslot
https://www.sportsmediawatch.com/2023/11/f1-las-vegas-ratings-espn-viewership/
Despite starting just before 1 AM ET Sunday morning, the inaugural Formula 1 Las Vegas Grand Prix averaged a 0.7 rating and 1.31 million viewers on ESPN — the largest F1 audience since the Sunday afternoon Canadian Grand Prix on ABC in June (1.76M). Max Verstappen’s win, which peaked early with 1.5 million from 1:15-1:30 AM, delivered the sixth-largest audience of the season and third-largest on cable.
Didn’t have to up against the NFL! :gomer:
Please do not bring Road America up to FIA standards. It's a wonderful, almost hidden, gem for real race fans.

Formula 1 Bet Big on Vegas. Did It Pay Off? (https://www.rollingstone.com/culture/culture-features/formula-1-las-vegas-debut-successes-failures-1234941512/)
“Everything in Vegas is bigger. I wouldn’t necessarily say better, but it’s bigger, more extroverted. So the race is also more of a show,” Sonderen says. “Americans are more competitive. You are raised ‘Be the best you can be.’ And in Europe, we say, ‘Doe Normaal,’ just do normal. Try your best to see where your limits are. And if you reach that limit, then you know where you are.”
It strikes me that if the Las Vegas Grand Prix is undergoing some version of this testing your limits, they’ve found them. They’ve made life miserable for locals, destroyed a car, got themselves sued by their own fans, and kept hundreds of thousands of people trapped in a labyrinth surrounded by $80 T-shirts and the Blue Man Group. Hunter S. Thompson could dream up nothing weirder. But to hear these European fans tell it: Good, now you know where you are. And where you are is Las Vegas.

Vegas' F1 race was a disaster. Now one of its casinos is suing.
https://www.sfgate.com/news/article/vegas-ellis-island-casino-formula-one-race-lawsuit-19470336.php
The lawsuit, which KSNV-TV obtained, lists the Las Vegas Grand Prix and Clark County as the two defendants and cites an “incomplete and ever-changing” construction schedule, and general obstruction of Ellis Island Casino’s entrance well after the day of the race itself, as the reason behind the lost revenue. The owners of the casino place plenty of the blame on F1.
