View Full Version : Snowpocalypse 2025
Snowpocalypse is coming across the midwest. Between 1 and 100 inches of snow predicted. Blizzards, tropical storms, and ice tornadoes depending on your location. Everyone get inside. The Shield Doors must be closed!

Seriously, everyone be safe out there.
Going to be 80 and sunny in northwest Indiana. But I still stood in line to get milk and bread anyway.
Stay safe everyone

Stay safe! I told a friend the other day I both miss and don't miss the snow in the northeast. (It rarely snowed in the Wichita area.)

Today is "windmageddon" here in the San Fernando Valley. Gusts up to 60 in the next few hours. Lights have already flickered twice. We're used to Santa Anas so I don't have anything ready to launch outside in my yard but I am keeping all my phones and portable lights charged in case of power outage. :p

I actually threaded the needle with a trip to Syracuse, NY last weekend.
Flew up Friday, landed in the clean and dry.
Saturday it snowed between 10-14 inches. It abated by mid-day.
Early Sunday for my flight back it was still clean and dry.
That never happens to me. I'm always the one with delays/cancellations.
I guess I was owed. :saywhat:

Stay safe. Do you have a 'go bag' packed?

Snowpocalypse turned out to be a pretty ordinary winter storm here. About six inches on the ground over a day. We were at the edge of it so Southern Ohio got a bit more.

No, I don't. So far, neither of the two biggies are near me. It's not good though with worst winds expected for HOURS between 10 PM tonight and 5 AM tomorrow. Then for several days. Contributing is this tidbit, "Southern California hasn’t seen more than 0.1 inches (0.25 centimeters) of rain since early May."
If you want to scare the bejeebers out of yourself, look at Alison Martino's Facebook page and the nighttime view of the fire in the distance. https://www.facebook.com/alisonmartino1970

Central MO on the I-70 corridor. About 6" of snow. Last two days have been cold in the morning (about zero) but as usual, the problem wasn't the snow/cold. It sleeted/rained before everything hit and everything was iced up pretty well. The KC metro was a skating rink.

As it turned out, the Hurst Fire started just north of me after I wrote the last post. I packed a suitcase and a carry-on. Two nights sleeping on the sofa so I could leave in an instant if need be. So far, I'm okay but so many people have lost everything and this is very far from over.
I’m just now seeing aerial views of the devastation. It’s unimaginable. I’ll take snow any day.

Stay safe and share updates, TG.
Some of the photos are truly apocalyptic. Prayers for everyone affected.

Talked to TG last night. Fires were still a decent distance from her house. Evidently the winds are predicted to die down allowing C-130 firefighting aircraft to operate, so that should help.

Thanks for chiming in pfc. It's a whirlwind (sorry for the term) trying to keep myself and everyone else updated. I didn't realize Townsend Bell lived here. Or not here anymore as the case may be. :(
It's brutal out there. I'm sitting at my computer wearing an N95. With the air calmer today, the particulate matter is starting to gather.
Update: as of 6 PM last night the evacuation warning for the Hurst Fire was lifted for the north San Fernando Valley. As I could tell from FREQUENT checks of the CalFire website, that fire was burning north. Luckily, I am a bit south of it and it continued on north. BUT, mid-afternoon yesterday, an arsonist set the Kenneth fire, which is to the west. Significant air water drop resources are currently being employed to prevent its spread into the main part of the San Fernando Valley where I am. Next, about 2 hours ago another suspicious-origin fire started just southwest of the Hurst Fire. This places it about six miles due north of me. This leads me to believe that I will, once again, be back in an evacuation warning area. At least it's not mandatory. At least I have water. At least I have power. And I still have my house. Stay tuned.
If you want facts, not TV news, check https://www.fire.ca.gov/incidents There is also an app that everyone swears by--which takes information from CalFire.
I can’t imagine what you and everyone there is going through.
Looking forward, and hopefully soon everyone will be, I wonder how property taxes will be calculated when many municipalities have lost everything? The financial burden has to be immense.

Just for the record, I'm not saying it didn't matter, but the cuts were 10% to counteract a raise in pay given to the firefighters themselves. At the time it seemed reasonable and not "extensive." Crowley is wilting under the criticism and decided this was her only form of defense.

Glad to hear you're safe TG. I hope it stays that way. I can't imagine the amount of stress people are under and feel for all those affected. :(

Thanks. Today and tomorrow will be dicey as the Palisades Fire, at 11% contained, moves north toward me. People are stressed to the max. A friend of mine who moved from Malibu to Santa Monica a few years ago wrote, "Having experienced these horrible fires before, I have never seen destruction on this scale. The impact is massive."

Yes, they have been dipping off Santa Monica for several days.
As an update, 9:15 AM Sunday, update. It has dawned on me that I have to provide the day of the week because this is going to go on for at least another week. For me, personally, it is still "so far, so good." The air is smokey although it looks clear. I'm grateful that I bought so many boxes of N95s during Covid. I wear one in the house.
For those of you who know the area, the evacuation warning line is at Ventura Blvd, the southern border of the San Fernando Valley. I'm pretty near the northern border. The good news is that that has not changed in the last two days.
More good news is that the Kenneth Fire is no longer listed as active. It's far to the West of me but that means the resources can be redeployed to the other fires. It also means it cannot connect with the Palisades Fire burning out that way.
It astounds me that these are often due to arsonists.
Please be safe!

Yes. Incredible sad. They have twelve (12!) in jail now. Very windy today but that was expected. So far, so good in TravelGal Land.

Stay safe, TravelGal! Although the wildfires are far from my area of SoCal, the scenes of total devastation and stories of those lost are deeply disturbing. :(
My aunt in Pasadena took in 2 friends who had to evacuate their home in Altadena last Tuesday, but all three of them were given the warning to evacuate from my aunt's house at 1 a.m. Wednesday. They spent 2 uncomfortable nights sleeping on pews at my aunt's church (btw, my aunt is 80 years old, and not in the best of health) before being allowed to return to her house. Luckily, the friends' house survived the Eaton fire, but they have no idea when they'll be able to return home.
I know someone who lost everything in the Eaton fire, except for the change of clothes and laptop that she took from her home; she didn't believe that her house was in danger. She doesn't even have a car, because as she was driving away from her home, a eucalyptus tree fell on it (those damned trees always fall down during the Santa Ana winds!!!). She's lucky to be alive, but I feel so awful for her losses.

This is the description of what is happening all over the affected SoCal area. I'm so, so sorry. Is there a go-fund me? I've donated twice to World Central Kitchen. They opened with 9 and now have 23 locations serving food. I would donate to someone you know also.
Edison says weeks if not months to restore power. There is no infrastructure left. I thank God every moment that my close-in area was spared everything except the trauma and the poor air quality.

He pulled up to Palisades fire with a fire engine and an offer to help. It was fake, police say (https://www.gazettextra.com/news/nation_world/he-pulled-up-to-palisades-fire-with-a-fire-engine-and-an-offer-to-help/article_181c24b4-97b2-5cb1-8cfe-76685a7c6ea0.html)
According to the law enforcement official, the man presented an Oregon driver's license with the name of Dustin Nehl. A search of Nehl's criminal history revealed he had served five years in prison for arson, the official said.
