Here's something to think about. In 2003, the IRL usually had about 21 cars per race. At various points in the series, 7 of their drivers suffered significant injuries. de Ferran, Dare, Meira, Giaffone and Fisher all missed at least one race due to injury. Additionally, Scott Dixon and Tony Kanaan both suffered injuries that required surgery. However, the long gap between Motegi and Indy meant that they didn't miss any races.
That means that during the season, 1/3 of their drivers suffered a serious injury.
