According to this TSN.ca article (http://www.tsn.ca/auto_racing/news_Story.asp?ID=58209) a shortage of funding has forced the organizers to end the 34 year old race through the streets.

One thing that I didn't realize was that Trois-Riviers was the first street race in North America.

It wasn't and the article does not say that. It says ". . . the first motor race on an urban circuit . . ."

Watkins Glen, Elkart Lake and Put-in-Bay here in Ohio had street races long before Trois-Riviers.

That statement needs all kinds of qualifications. It might not even be possible to qualify it sufficiently to be meaningful. There were a number of races run on public roads, mostly through public parks, that date back before Trois Rivieres started and which continued until a dozen or so years ago. Not major races, but races nevertheless.

Road racing in the U.S. after WWII began on public roads (Watkins Glen, Put-n-Bay, Bridgehampton, etc.,) before being moved to decomissioned airfields and then purpose built road courses.

Before WWII there were no purpose built road courses and the only road racing took place on public roads.

So, unless you're about 12 years old, you couldn't even say "in your lifetime."

Several races counting toward the AAA championship in the pre WW1 era could be classified as street races, too. Events in Philadelphia, Santa Monica, Savaanah, and Milwaukee come to mind.

Before the start of the Elgin Illinois race contested on public roads.

Open road events were held in this area from '08 through the thirties.

Now wait a cottn' pickn' minute here boys.

See, Murican racing is Oval racing! That's why Tony started the IRL to return Indycar racing back to it's oval only heritage. All this talk 'bout road or street racing being Murican is nothing more than CARTisan lies.

It's been all oval all the time from Day One. Tony done said so not long ago and Tony always tells the truth.

Wheels Trivia.....
Did you know that initial development of the automobile met with stiff opposition from horse-driven coach companies? In the mid-1800's turnpike charges were hiked dramatically for the "cars" on the road.Early legislation in Britain also mandated that someone with a red flag walk 50 meters ahead of "road locomotives" signaling the driver when to stop.

irl's beginnings?
