You're obviously brighter than the average MSCE since you've set up PHP forums on a Linux server.

I guess sometimes it's just one of those bidness decisions. :)

I need a clue. Who is Steve Johnson?

Was it intended to be Stephan Johansson?

No, I won't apply. I'm a Mac user. :D

Ah, so you're using OS X - Linux for newbies.

(This said by a guy whose next PC will likely be a Mac because he needs Linux for newbies.)

I'm trying to install Slackware right now...

Well, I do have OSX on an external Firewire HD. Haven't used it in months. I know the time has come for me to switch to OSX 10.2 but when you are 60, changing is tough. Although I'm retired, I'm Chairman of a Board and they have given me an IBM T23 to use as well as a desktop whenever I'm in the office. So during the past year getting into NT and now Win2000 has been enough excitement. Actually, most applications function the same under both OSes. It is learning the nitty gritty that is a nuisance.

I'm going to make the switch to OSX after I do my tax return in April. Next weekend we leave for 67 days in NZ and AU and I'm going to take the T23 with me for digital picture storage. It has a 60gb HD and I would like to have some back up for the camera. The camera has a 1gb HD and will hold 3285 shots at 1280 x 960. I just can't bear to think that I could lose all the pictures. So I'm going to download every few days (will probably take 100+ per day - especially in Milford Sound and areas where Lord of the Rings was filmed) and burn a few CDs for extra backup. The camera will take video (the 1 gb HD holds 15 minutes of full size) so I will periodically take a few minutes and then dump it on the T23 as well. Now I figure I will take 6000+ shots but be able to edit them in the evening.

I just bought a backpack that has a lovely heavily padded compartment for the computer and another large partition for the camera (and the power units, battery charger, and the inverter I'm taking so I can recharge in the Holden as we go, as well as in the hotel at nights). My camera (Fuji S602Z) doesn't provide PAL output so we will not be able to view the shots on TV - but having the laptop solves that problem as well. I was going to buy and iBook for the trip but decided to go with the T23.

I also downloaded a couple of hundred mp3's to listen to over the 67 days and I can trash them if I need the disk space for pictures or video (can't imagine filling 60gb though).

I'm hoping to get into an internet cafe from time to time and will check in here since I think this will be the permanent home for most CART fans.

This will also be a supreme test - away from racing boards and news for over two months!!!! (My wife thinks that is just great - she doesn't understand how I can possibly have withdrawal symptoms :-)

Sure will. I've got a location on pbase where I posted a few shots to get some practice with the camera and the best way to upload and organize the pictures. Given the quantity I'll have, when I return my No.1 son will be setting up a 40GB drive for me on his system (he is an ISP - a Unix/Linux nut) so I can put them all on and family and friends can view them. I'll likely put the 2400 best shots on a CD for family members without high speed access.

www.pbase.com is going pay for use - which is fine. It now has over 6 million pictures on it. But the amount of storage I'll need makes that impractical.

And at least you get to compare to the other platform at work - unlike Perk who insists on driving only a rear engine car with front wheel drive. :D

You're using Shadow's use of an Apple Weegie Board as proof of his goodness?

Seems to me that is as good an indicator as wooden shoes. :D

Shouldn't that be 'wood shoes'?

Could 'wood' be considered an adjective? As in 'wooding' up some shoes?

Aren't Mac's the computers with the commercials that feature people who are too stupid to plug in a cable talking about how they got something to work with a MAC?

Any chance Steve Johnson's (stole that from an old, old Foyt interview) American Spirit Racing needs a Poet Laureate or just a grumpy old prof to obfuscate in press releases?

Mac user since 1985. :)

But I've been known to do Windows at intersections for a dollar. :p

SJ sold the kart track quite some time ago (approx. a year), as he was in driving European Le Mans for 2002.

Did you know that Gates had to postpone his wedding for four years? His wife refused to do the windows so he had to teach her. :)
