I've been reading a lot about Gilles Villeneuve lately and it got me to thinking just now: If you could go back in time and watch any one driver (from any discipline) in person, who would it be? Gilles? Senna? Fangio? Moss? Clark? Mario Andretti? Mears? Maybe Greg Moore for the newer fans?

For me it would have to be Villeneuve. I would have loved to have been at Dijon in 1979. I saw my first race on TV in 81 (Indy) when I was 7 years old. He died before my 9th birthday. Truth be told, I knew very little about F1 and never really followed it at all until Jacques made the move to F1 at the end of the 1995 season. I had never even heard of Gilles until Jacques came along. :o But I've read a lot about him since then and have seen the video of those legendary last few laps at Dijon. He just seems like a pure racer to me, nothing phony about him, especially behind the wheel.

What about you?

Gilles Villeneuve
Jim Clark
Racin Gardner
Tazio Nuvolari (especially in the Auto Union)

I'd say Stirling Moss but I actually have seen him race in person.

I've only seen Jim Clark drive at the real Indy 500 and on a few old videos. He was my first racing hero and this nine year old kid cried when he was killed. I'd love to be able to see him thrash his Lotus around Nurburgring.

Hunt the Shunt - as much for his off track reputation :)

Christian Lautenschlager in his Mercedes at the 1914 French GP.

Jimmy Murphy in his Duesenberg at the 1921 French GP.

Tazio Nuvolari in his Auto Union D at Donnington Park, 1938.

Jim Clark in his Lotus at Clermont-Ferrand for the 1965 French GP.

And Steve McQueen/Peter Revson in their Porsche 908 at Sebring in 1970.

Would have to be Jim Clark or Tazio Nuvolari. Two of the greatest racers of all time.

Dan Gurney on any roadcourse anywhere...

Hey Eag

all you had to do was venture out to that "Spa in a Cornfield" in '69 and '70 and drank a little beer with me.

You are lucky. I have seen video of him over the years. I especially enjoyed the Tyrrell documentary that Jackie's son put together several years ago and I saw the footage from the '73 German GP during the USGP coverage this year. I wish I would have had the privelege of seeing him race in person.
