View Full Version : CART on CSI: Miami tonight (11/10)

INDIANAPOLIS (November 10, 2003) - October's Grand Prix Americas Presented by Sportsbook.com was the backdrop for an historic 1-2 finish by Herdez Competition as well as the second win in the career of Mario Dominguez, but behind the scenes and unbeknownst to most Miami race goers, it was also the setting for a high-profile Hollywood murder mystery.
That mystery will be solved Monday night by the crack investigation staff of CBS' popular crime drama CSI: Miami as the Champ Car-themed episode airs on CBS at 10 p.m. Eastern Time.
The show, which was filmed during the Miami race weekend, involves the murder of a Champ Car crew member and details the investigation process that leads to the solution of the crime. The episode features the American Spirit Team Johansson team prominently as well as the Mi-Jack/Conquest and Rocketsports Racing squads, and will feature some of the high-speed on-track action that took place during Round 16 of the Bridgestone Presents The Champ Car World Series Powered by Ford.

This woulda been cool if it was done earlier in the year. Some of the CSI watchers may have looked at a TV guide and seen "The ChampCar Grand Prix of Mid Ohio" or some other race and tuned in to see "the kind of racing they had on CSI!". Now it'll be long-forgotten by the time the season opener comes around in Feb.

Unfortunately that idea would only work if CBS had a "CSI: Lexington" in its lineup. ;)
Even if they splashed huge CART logos all over the show, I think you would have a hard time building "brand awareness" through something like this. I think the best you can hope for is that people will think of open-wheel street racing as something cool. Maybe they won't look in their TV Guide and make the connection, but they might when flipping channels next year.

Lame writing. Lame acting. Seeing the Champ Cars and the Champ Car logo all over a prime time network TV show was great though. There was some silliness, but it's TV, and about what I expected.
CSI Miami is one of the highest rated shows around these days. The episode was the typical crimi melodrama presented every week.
But look on the bright side. Driven makes CSI : Miami "Grand Prix" look like an American masterpiece.
Additionally, the explanations of champcar aerodynamics and engine technology in the course of the show as part of the forensic work was actually more informative than anything ABC/ESPN has ever done for openwheel racing race broadcasts.

I didn't say that I didn't enjoy it. There was plenty of eye candy and since it was basically an hour-long commercial for CART and Ford, that's a good thing. :) :thumbup:
Since there is no CSI:Gomerville, I don't think that we need to worry about the IRL getting the same prime time coverage.

Whatever you thought of the acting..that was some amazing promotion for CART. Any one given CSI Miami episode gets 6-8 times the ratings of any one CART race...so in a way I wonder if this was CBS' bonus for all of the time CART bought from them during the year. Whatever the case, it was almost a 1 hour free commercial for Champcars with a huge audience... great stuff! :D
I'll take the free publicity. But, are there really people who watch this show every week? This is the first time I've seen the show and will probably be the last time. :eek: Unless they do another ChampCar episode.:D

I just thought of something... I didn't bother watching the show last night, but if the Nielsons for CSI are so good, can we put the numbers from the CART episode into the total for ChampCar races last year?
Couldn't hurt, could it???

Thought it was pretty lame myself, but it is publicity. It would have been nice to have had the show just before or during the season though.

I thought it looked pretty slick. They got a lot of the technology stuff down and the Champ Car name got out there. I hadn't watched this show before either,but I was entertained. Would have liked more racing! :cool:

I thought it was lame as hell. The cringe per minute factor was higher than I have ever had with any other TV show. It was strange in that they would get something mostly correct, then blow it with a big goof. Makes you wonder how accurate they are with the same kind of details with shootings, drownings, and stabbings. What I found most off about the acting, is that when they spoke of technical racing things, all of them sounded as if they were mimicking a foreign language.
But, I can clearly see the plus side of things with it. The racing footage, and the sound was excellent. And just having it stated that the cars can drive across the ceiling at 140 MPH probably gave enough wow factor to the uninformed that they might check things out.
I was most impressed with selling the ChampCar brand and image. They seemed to go out of their way to talk about Champ Cars, in particular how cool they are. The scene with the woman admiring the car and talking about how cool it was to be up close to one was very cool. They definately were pushing the "sexy cars," "sexy people" image - or as some like to call it, "the carnival atmosphere." That is what really differentiates CART from NASCAR and the IRL.
I also noticed they went out of the way to plug some sponsors - like the CSI talking about how reliable the "Ford Cosworth" engines are. The reaction in my house was, "PLUG!!!"
Lots of value in that for CART, even if there were some liberties taken with reality. It certainly was a lot closer than Driven! (Although I think that says more about Driven than CSI:Miami)
I hope Sly watched it.

It would certainly make a lot of sense to air it again in the March timeframe (or maybe early June?) - just as the new season is starting or hitting full stride. And maybe a "CART/OWRS" freebie promo or two thrown in?
With all of the comments here, remember that CSI: Miami is a Jerry Bruckheimer production. He typically goes for the folks with attention decifit disorder. Choppy editing style and all.
Yes, I caught several technical goofs and some stuff was way contrived, but given the nature of the show, I think it was spot on with the audience they aim to attract.

so I'm watching this thing on tape right now.
THe cars and the noise are cool, the sponsors and manufactures get a little screen time, the series itself gets way more mention/exposure than I would have thought.
But this show, the actors and the writng, could suck a golf ball up a garden hose.
I don't watch network TV outside sports but please tell me people don't actually watch this kind of drek.
Do Lt. Shades and Officer Cro-Mongan solve crime every week by dragging sheet they've never seen into the cosmic lab?

Did anybody else think the evil crew chief looked like Buddy Baker?

His name is Wings Hauser. He has had many guest appearances on Roseanne, China Beach, and to date when I was in College 90210. He usually plays villian characters or the tough nice guy types.
