Home Theatre Speaker Stereo systems

I am looking to buy a home theatre stereo system for my family room. I have a 51" wide screen sony tv that I want to accesorize. I want room shaking sound but something that wont cost an arm and a leg. I like the sound of the BOSE 5.1 system but its really expensive. Anyone have any ideas as to something more affordable with awesome room shaking sound?

I pieced mine together two years ago now. I was on a tight budget because I bought my widescreen TV at the same time so every piece I bought was a "bang for your buck" item. The fella at the audio department at Best Buy actually knew something of which he spoke (a rarity) and turned me on to the Yamaha speakers. These things hold up against the more audiophile speakers at half the price. My biggest regret was not getting the larger sub-woofer at the time.

Also keep in mind that 6.1 is becoming more and more the standard. Dolby Digital EX (6.1) and DTS ES 6.1.
I prefer DTS myself.

I heard Yamaha is very good. Did you also get a yamaha receiver?

I went with a Technics receiver. It was super cheap, but extremely capable. They are since defunct though. Mine does internal Dolby 5.1 and DTS. Which is where you want to do your decoding, in the receiver, not the peripherals. So you don't need to buy a DVD player with built in decoding, it's a waste of money.

I have the Kenwood VR-605 (http://www.audioreview.com/A-V+Receivers/Kenwood+VR-605/PRD_135051_2718crx.aspx) and I highly recommend it. Its not perfect, but for entry level recievers (at least at the time of my purchase), it was definitely the best choice.

I also have Yamaha speakers, (NS-P220 (http://www.yamaha.com/cgi-win/webcgi.exe/DsplyModel/?gSPK00010NS-P220)), they are on the low end but they sound alright. Subwoofer is kinda weak though, only 50 watts. A friend of mine has a 300 watt Klipsch sub, that is so powerful that its almost overkill.

Gotta decide what you want to use your speakers for. Most home theatre speakers are crap for music... if you want something that does both well make sure you invest in some good towers or even good bookshelfs for your front speakers. Those little cube thingies suck for music.

All depends on your budget... how much of your money am I allowed to help you spend? :D
