"Goodyear Blimp "AKRON" was brought down by an impact from a low flying vehicle of unknown origin while traveling to Los Angeles yesterday. The accident occurred near Fontana, California in clear, sunny weather with very light winds. Visibility was good and the control tower did not report any traffic in the area.

Preliminary findings indicate that the aircraft was of an experimental design with very large wings, constructed of a very low-grade carbon fibre with a sloppy, inconsistent matrix. Both FAA and NTSB Investigators concur that this was likely a home-built kit aircraft flown by a novice.
