I'm curious...
What kind of music do people listen to in here....My tastes range from retro-80s to some modern rock to some classic rock to electronica (I used to spin about 5 years ago...i still have the equipment. in fact, i bought new turntables about two years ago, and new CD players over the holidays)
If you want some electronica titles, feel free to ask...
Origanal Rap by artists such as C.W. McCaw (Convoy), Lorne Greene (Ringo), and Jimmy Dean (Big Bad John).
:) Yes I know I'm a :gomer:
Warlock!
02-20-04, 04:46 PM
Thash, death, speed, and power metal, and blues/bluesy rock. Mainly, anyhow.
Winter Warlock!
I listen to metal almost exclusively. I like a lot of different genres of metal, but I don't like the more extreme death or speed metal. Here's my general rule: if I can't read the name of the band on the CD cover then I won't like the music. My favorites include Dream Theater, Savatage, Yngwie Malmsteen and Metal Church, but I could easily rattle off 20 or 30 bands that I really like.

Really? I have...in 1986!!! :) Man, do I have stories of when I was in a metal band opening up for national acts here in DC.
I did the punk thing in the late 70's. New Wave in the early 80's. Metal in the mid '80's to the early '90's. From '94 I went to the alternative rock scene and now I'm in the sappy songwritter genre like Aimee Mann.
This week (and it was a bad week) Everybody Knows this is Nowhere by Neil Young with Crazy Horse. Albert King and Stevie Ray Vaughn "sessions". Bob Dylan "blood on the tracks" I just got a copy of Led Zepplin IV (dang Cadillac commercials) which has not been opened yet.
I have been giving NPR an ear most of the week, while the great beef debate roars onward....... and watching the market of course
Ziggy
UFO - Best Rock and Roll band ever, hands down
Fabulous Thunderbirds - One of the best bar bands ever
The Outlaws - Three guitarist, two drummers and a bass player DANG! I just loved these guys and went to see them quite a bit.
Foghat - Very under rated band
Gary Moore - will burn your ears, serious chops
Joe Walsh - hell of a musician (but I hate the Eagles)
Thin Lizzy- should have sold more records in the US
Danny Gatton - Im not worthy (figure's he wasnt as well)
Rory Gallagher - RIP, an amazing body of work left for all to enjoy
Jimi Hendrix - just sit back and LISTEN to the guitar work
The Beatles - you want a pop record, you cant handle a pop record
John Hiatt - and old soul with good musical sense. He and Sonny slay me
Jimmy Thackery, Tab Benoit, Chris Duarte, Larry Carlton, Albert King, Albert Collins, Son Seals, Robert Ward,SRV, Little Charlie, Magic Slim, T-Bone Walker, Anson Funderburke, Tommy Castro, Troy Turner, Eric Gales, Otis Rush, Earl King, Lil' Ed, Wes Montgomery, Roy Buchannon, to name a few.

There's very little music I don't enjoy.
Some of my very favorites are Ani Difranco, Nirvana, James Taylor, Alabama, Travelling Wilburys, old Metallica, tons of classical... it's an enormous list.
one of my all time fav's is U2. Even their first few albums (Boy, October, War) have a fresh sound to them, and they were made more than 20 years ago.
Ahh.... music.
I saw Nebula last night in Denver. They are a sludgy, stoner-rock band like early Black Sabbath (Master of Reality). A litttle too much wah-wah pedal, but when they hit a slow groove, it was amazing. J Mascis (of Dinosaur Jr.) comes to town next week. British Sea Power is the week after that and Broken Social Scene after that. Woo Hoo ! ! ! !
Grew up on the metal with Maiden, pre-Garage Days Metallica, Slayer and found indie rock in college - Sonic Youth, Mudhoney, Dinosaur Jr, Sebadoh - all bands that rocked that weren't metal. It opened the door to a whole new realm of cute girls in ringer tees. :) I also spent 1990/ 91 doing the Dead thing (20 shows + 2 Jerry shows), but that got old quick. :gomer:
These days I'm into Interpol, Sigur Ros, Modest Mouse, God Speed You Black Emperor, some pop (Wilco, New Pornographers, Belle & Sebastian, Destroyer and Magnetic Fields) and still dabble with "harder" stuff like Queens of the Stone Age, Unwound and Fu Manchu. However, the kings of rock/ sonic punk are ... And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead. Check them out if you like fast, powerful, emo pure adrenaline rock-n-roll ! ! ! (All 3 albums are great, but Source Codes and Tags is a perfect 10, even though they might be too much for Warlock.)

Good thread, for some reason I seem to be stuck in the sixties and seventies but in saying that I like most music except that boot scootin' stuff they call C&W these days.
I tend to like Canadian/West Coast music, The Guess Who, BTO, Neil Young, Gordon Lightfoot, Chilliwack and older groups like Buffalo Springfield and CSNY. I could listen to the Carpenters one minute and Hendrix the next with not a worry so I guess that covers quite a selection. :)
Ziggy, I too had NY out this week, on a record no less and it was great to crank it up with no family at home. I also gave The Best Of The Rolling Stones (the original 70s album) and Deep Purple a spin. I'd forgotten how good they were back then, imho of course! :)

My primary genre is Alt. Rock. I like Rock, Metal, gruinge, Punk, Techno and some Pop/Rock. I like the beats/music in Rap, but couldn't care less for the lyrics. I hate country music.
Just foolin'! ^^^ :D
If I could copy and paste Ziggy's post I would. Pretty stout lineup there in my view.

A letter by Door drummer John Densmore to the Nation magazine actually gives a bit of history to that commercial
"A big thanks to Tom Waits for his eloquent letter. Cynthia McCulloh might be interested to know that in the Cadillac spot she mentions, Led Zeppelin was actually GM's second choice, after we (The Doors) turned down an amount of money that makes me weak in the knees. At the end you see their new SUV roar by, and it says, "Break Through," with the Caddie logo in between. They wanted it to say, "Break on Through"!"
JOHN DENSMORE
So Wickerbill, you can thank the integrity of "some" Doors members for that that Zeppelin song.
There is an interesting article by the above-named drummer here (http://www.thenation.com/doc.mhtml?i=20020708&s=densmore)
Mostly punk, The Ramones, Bad Religion, Pennywise, nofx, Black Flag, Circle Jerks, Dead Kennedys, Social Distortion, etc. Some metal (Anthrax, Megadeth, Metallica) and some of the few worthwhile rap guys that are out there (Dan The Automator, Jurassic 5, Outkast, Del Tha-Funky Homosapiens, Beastie Boys) and have been listening to DJ Danger Mouse's "The Grey Album" a lot lately.

Mostly into classic rock, The Eagles, Skynyrd, Rolling Stones, and I've been listening to alot of blues lately after buying the Blues Brothers DVD. ;) The ironic thing is my best friend and my cousin are in a blues band but everytime they have a concert I end up not seeing them...its been two years and I still haven't seen them play, its starting to irritate them!
I'm taking a Roots of Rock & Soul class at CSU this semester, and its very interesting to hear the music leading up to the dawn of the rock era like Robert Johnson, Johnny Cash, etc... It is a real shame that no one my age shows any appreciation for it.

Ziggy - Maybe you were there too, but I saw The Outlaws open for SRV at the Holiday Star in Merriville. Saw the T-Birds open for SRV at the same place the year before. Both stellar shows. Glad I had a chance to see him quite a few times before he bought the farm. Saw him play with Lonnie Mack, too. Is he still alive?
Anyway, I'll listen to almost anything except country or rap. alt-country is acceptable. ;)
I'll also listen to whatever Crapus tells me to. :D
Geez...I wouldn't know where to begin. I'll listen to just about anything. It used to be if you lived in the Chicago area you'd mention, "I listen to XRT" and that would explain almost everything. Since that station sold out and many of you would have no clue about WXRT FM 93.1 anyway.....I own stuff anywhere from Rancid to twangy bluegrass. I don't like Rap, I know practically nothing about Jazz and very little about classical, however they are on my radar. Lately I'm into alt country, have always had a soft spot for Irish influenced stuff, enjoy old reggae and Ska and I'm excited to hear what I'll be exposed to on XM's new station "Fungus", a punk station. Popular, "hit" music is horrible. I believe you have to dig deep and search for good stuff, get away from the mass marketed crap. There are far too many great artists that get little recognition.

My musical tastes are pretty diverse. I like singer/songwriters and clever songwriters in particular. (R.I.P. Warren Zevon) With the exception of the rap and pop crap that they play on the radio now, I enjoy anything that makes me want to dance. I actually listen to more middle eastern dance and pop music these days than anything else- at least when I'm in the car. At work, I have to play "normal" stuff or my coworkers ask "What ARE you listening to?!!"

Ok.... i'll try and keep it as short as possible while I highlight some of the faves... I'll very diverse (imo) in what I like, and it bascially falls down to what I want to listen to at the time.....

Blues - BB King; SRV; Professor Longhair; Dr. John; McKinley Morganfield ;); Louis Jordan; Leadbelly;

So yesterday, half an hour after I left work, I was meeting some friends for dinner and turned on the car radio. The talk radio guys where actually playing some songs in their completion to kick off their show. I heard two songs before I was at the restaurant and I made a mental note to come back and mention them in this thread.
The first one (I do not know the name) was a classic Iggy Pop and it rocked. I mean rocked!
The second was 'Radio Radio' by Elvis. Costello that is, and man does his stuff hold up. Pure Genius

Click HERE (http://www.fordfalcons.com/other/music) to view my enitre CD collection, cassette collection, and vinyl collection as well. ( I just bought 27 more CD's today that I dont have yet....those arent on the list)
I am definately a metal head, especially the 80's stuff (no, I dont mean glam rock hair bands...I mean 80's METAL...), but I also am a big fan of The Cure, The Reverend Horton Heat, Nirvana, and about a million other bands. Am also a HUGE Judas Priest fan, who has reunited and is runored to be on the Ozzfest lineup....which if true, I may take some time off work and go to 3 shows or so.
I'm not listening to anything in particular though I drug out Lake's first album and revisited it. Am considering relistening to Pink Floyds - Dark Side of the Moon again.
I'll listen to
70's Rock and roll:
70's Country Rock
80's Music
Select country
Jazz
Zaideco
R & B
I listen a lot to some compilation music from my collection of One-off rock classics of the 70's:

Argent
Bob Gilder
Heartsfield
Batdorf and Rodney

Chilliwack
etc.

I like Euro style hard rock. Starts with Deep Purple, and many of the DP family of bands, including Blackmore's Night, David Coverdale's Whitesnake. When I say Whitesnake and DC, the stuff of his I listen to the least is the hair metal stuff from 87 and Slip of the Tongue....although occasionaly I dab into it and still love it. I like Slide it In and his later stuff like Restless Heart and Into the Light. He'd blown his voice out by then so there is nicer lower singing on these albums. Glenn Hughes, the Hughes Turner Project, Yngwie, Brazen Abbot, Ring of Fire, Boston all of their albums. If it rocks and has great singing, harmonies and melody I'm there. Since music's my job I usually only listen at the gym and in my car.

HaHA! I know your just kidding, But I actually have an answer for that. One, is that I dont list any copied tapes (at least not that I recall doing), because usually they are incomplete albums, or one tape has two albums, and so on. The second is that the tape you made me was badly warped. You must have used a bad tape......or one that got nearby a magnet. The volume was LOUD and then rreaaaaaaaaaaaaaaly quiet and THEN LOUD AGAIN FOR A SEcond and then quiet and then lOUD AGAIN FOr a second or two. Un bearable. Never listened to it after that. I even tried to use it as a blank tape, but it recorded that way again.
Glad to see you still around too, Old timer. ;)
These days my tastes lean heavily toward Blues but I still listen to a lot of rock, singer/songwriter stuff and a bit of pop. Ziggy already listed most of my Blues favorites, but here are a few favorites from across the spectrum that I haven't seen listed.
Alice Cooper - Listening to Alice and corrupting church girls was about as bad as I got in my youth. Alice still kicks ass and his last three have been really outstanding albums.
Joan Osborne - I overlooked Joan for years after "What If God Were One of Us" got played to death. If you did too you should give her another look - a soulful singer songwriter with deep roots in R&B.
Cracker - Cracker is a melting pot of American roots rock influences - from trailer trash garage rock to country blues, all with clever lyrics and a sense of irony that belie the simplicity of the music. http://www.crackersoul.com
LP - LP Rocks. A New York rocker with an amazing set of pipes. She can go from loud and hard to soft and soulful in a heartbeat. She's back on the road in March. Don' t miss her March 3rd at Little Brother's in Cbus! http://lprock.com
Mike Henderson - Mike is a Nashville guy who started out country but these days plays mostly rock-a-billy and blues. He's got a distinct guitar sound and plays a mean harp. If you're in Nashville you can often catch him at the Bluebird Cafe. http://mikehenderson.com
Bill Miller - An amazing singer songwriter, guitarist and Native American flute player whose Native American heritage and spirituality flow through all his work. Folk, rock, country and blues, he's dabbled in it all and done it all well. http://www.billmiller.net
Willy Porter - Another singer songwriter guitarist worth checking out. http://willyporter.com
Toni Price - soulful blues, country and R&B with a Texas twang. http://toniprice.com
Amanda Marshall - Pop/rock and somewhat dancey, but she's got an amazing voice and a bit more intelligence and humor in the mix than your average pop diva. http://www.amandamarshall.com
Train - pop, but good pop.
Warren Zevon - Master of rock noir, gone way too soon and will be sorely missed.
Whatever RaceGrrl is Dancing To - if she's grooving must be good. :)

I wouldn't give the Doors too much credit, they sold out a long time ago, a few of their songs were used in TV and radio commercials in the 60's and 70's. I can't remember for sure, but I'm almost positive 'Light My Fire' was used for a BIC lighter commercial or something.
Give Zep some credit, it took them a heck of a lot longer to sell out to a commercial than most bands.

 Absolutely. Willy Porter, hero of Madison, WI, is a good song writer, and a master of many styles. His guitar playing at times, sounds a bit like Leo Kottke. I don't know what you are talking about regarding the Doors selling out via commercials. I guess you didn't see John Densmore's well known the Nation piece about why he is the no vote on selling the music (requires the full band's approval). The one time approval was granted for a Buick commercial, in the 1960's it was quickly withdrawn and the commercial never aired (or any other ones). Anyway see the piece here:

I guess Cadillac approached the Doors and again Densmore said no, which is why they are using Led Zep's Rock and Roll.........ya notice they stole the Break On Through theme and are saying "Break Through" ?

Wise choice by Densmore. By the time GM and their agency gets done flogging Led Zep's tune into dust, they will have rendered LZ so repellant and unlistenable to so many that any vestige of commercial viability will be gone from their early music. Look at how many years Chevy Truck pounded Bob Seeger's tune into the ground. Just to lend some perspective, my friend and then Chevy Truck account executive Tom Tomson, who originally came up with the campaign (and a Royal Oak, MI neighbor of Seeger) long ago moved on and has been at another company more than 5yrs at the point those commercials stopped airing. Then again, GM is well practised at flogging dead horses.

It annoys me so much to hear that great song.....and John Bonham's drums flogged to death.....and Damn it, Seger's Like A Rock was one of his greatest acheivements ever and it's just totally destroyed......I did it a few times in a band.....but as soon as the commercials started I had to stop. And I probably will never sing the song again. I just thank god he hasn't ruined Night Moves yet as it is one of my signature songs to sing in bands.

JohnOK, John. Question. "I was a little too tall, could use a few pounds". What in the world are the next lyrics? "Tight pants points, falling me down"?

I listen to just about anything, as long as it isn't a stolen piece of music that someone feels compelled to talk over! I did find an oldie but goodie the other day that brought back some memories, Steve Martin's, "The Grandmother Song" :D

I was a little too tall
Could've used a few pounds
Tight pants points hardly reknown
She was a black-haired beauty with big dark eyes
And points all her own sitting way up high
Way up firm and high

Great thread.
I listen to most types of music rock, jazz, blues and classical EXCEPT for Country. Just can't get into it at all. I guess it stems from my dad playing all those Porter Waggoner, Marty Robbins and Eddie Arnold LPs all those years :saywhat:
But dad did have some great taste in jazz with John Coltrane, Stan Getz, Miles Davis and Ramsey Lewis LPs getting fair play on the turntable so he's forgiven! :)
As for me, the rock I listen to is classic, alt, progressive, soul, some electronica and underground. I HATE most rap, rap metal and dance pop schlock crap like Britney, Pink, Jessica the tuna et al. Debbie Gibson this means you too.
The best period of rock history IMHO was from 1991-1995 GRUNGE rules and was the greatest deservedly killing more careers than any other type of music.
My favs: Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, Stone Temple Pilots, Cheap Trick, Rolling Stones, Smashing Pumpkins, The Pixies, Roxy Music, Sonic Youth, Thin Lizzy, AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, Van Halen (Roth era), Aerosmith, The Ramones, The Pretenders, The Police, Queen, Red Hot Chili Peppers and now Nickleback.
Acts I also love but the majority of you probably have never heard of include Fugazi, Bad Brains, Rory Block, Primus, The Minutemen, New York Dolls, King Crimson and Bruce Cockburn.
Those whose careers could end tomorrow and I would get on my knees to thank God: Britney, Madonna, Jessica Simpson, Pink, Fred Durst, Linkin Park, Godsmack and most rap artists.

Good call, they rock...
I don't like country, rap or hip-hop but I do like rock & roll, auto racing and swimmin' with bow-legged wimmin'
Let's resurrect this puppy.
In the car now: Merzbow, Soul Coughing, TchKunG! and Einsturzende Neubauten. When traffic backs up to the point of going 100 yards in 20 minuts, people really seem to love the Merzbow.

By the time GM and their agency gets done flogging Led Zep's tune into dust, they will have rendered LZ so repellant and unlistenable to so many that any vestige of commercial viability will be gone from their early music. oc
As if most AOR/"classic rock" stations haven't done that already. I wouldn't be upset about it IF said radio stations actually delved into an artist's library on occasion instead of playing the same half-dozen songs ad-nauseum.
When I hear the start of a Led Zep song, I start looking through the CDs that may be at hand just to spare my sanity. The same can be said for Aerosmith, Floyd, Boston, AC/DC, etc.
The saddest part of it is that many alternative rock stations are doing the same thing with newer acts.
Is it any wonder that some of my favorite acts rarely get any radio airplay?

Please allow me to add a few more great bands I listen too.
Mudhoney, The Melvins, The Pieces (nice trio out of Indy), Kings X and an oldie, The Smiths.
I've got The Melvins in right now...it's loud, dark and a murky pile of ooze, but God, it's fantastic!

Funny, I was going to post a post on if anyone had gotten and will be getting the Pink Floyd reissues in the Immersion version?
I knew they were reissuing their records and a few weeks ago went to my local record store (they still exist) and went to buy Dark Side when I noticed there was the cheaper Experience version and the expensive Immersion. I got the Experiance version but now am questioning that at least for that album perhaps I should have got the Immersion version.

For me these days it's mostly just eclectic internet stations:
Radio Paradise

KCRW

FIP (Paris)
Or times like the last week when I've been listening to Blues:
Oil City Blues
Blue Ears Radio
181.fm True Blues
Or getting spaced out at SOMA FM
Or Bollywood stuff
Whatever

Sorry, I missed the rest of this thread and the question, so here's the answer seven years later, (and I don't need Google to answer this) :
"Tight Pants points, hardly renowned."
