Cool. I've just submitted this as a story to http://slashdot.org

Slashdot is a huge (mostly Linux) geek site that covers computer storys as well as science news and anything else of interest to geeks like me. They regularly feature stories on the X PRIZE. They're known, among other things, for 'the slashdot effect'. That being the ability to bring lesser websites to their knees just by posting a story with a url (and having many tens of thousands of geeks flock to the site).

Last time I tried, my submission wasn't accepted. But this time I feel I have a relatively good chance. If it's accepted and posted, we'll get to see if cart.com can survive a proper slashdotting.

Thanks. It will be interesting to see A.J. in a ChampCar.

If Carmack bought a ChampCar team it would have brought the Internet down, not just ChampCar.com.

Just let him finish Doom 3. :) (I can't believe nVidia managed to become the prefered card)

I was just on the x-prize site when I was surprised by the ChampCar logo. I wonder if ChampCar is doing enough to advertise this on the race broadcasts...

I watched the live broadcast on The Science Channel today (I still have it on, and just saw the clip of Kalkoven at last week's test). Every time the channel went to a break, there was was a voiceover saying "The Ansari X-Prize, sponsored by the Champ Car World Series" and they'd display the CCWS logo on the screen. I was so proud of "my" racing series!

now if ChampCar can get Paul Allen to invest in a few teams...

I watched the Discovery channel show "Black Sky" today and it really drives home what has been achieved and the bravery and ingenuity of the people who achieved it.

This was basically a stick and rudder, seat of the pants flight into space. That hasn't been done since the early X-planes. There is a followup Discovery program on the second flight also called "Black Sky" on Discover Thursday at 9PM.

The Discovery program was good, but didn't include any mention of Champ Car's sponsorship. The seemed to be conciously excluding mention of commercial sponsors. M&Ms did manage to sneak one mention in although when they were showing the zero-G demo they were referred to as "candies".

This is the kind of stuff the USAF wanted to do in the 60s, but they believed in stick and rudder to orbit and back as well.

The next Xprize should up the ante to orbit and re-entry.

Make NASA blush.

Well, today is probably the payoff for their investment. The Ansari X-Prize Presented by The Bridgestone Presents the ChampCar World Series Powered by Ford has finally been won.

They get a nice equal billing with Ansari on the splash page but I'm afraid that's gonna be about it. It's getting only brief mentions on the news - although there is a Discovery Channel program about the project.

[edit]

Oh yeah, and congrats to Rutan and the the crew. Way to go guys.
