The points awarded were 1/32, 2/29, 3/27, 4/24, 5/21 and on down through 18/3. Is this correct. Only 3 points separate 1/2 and 2 points between 2/3. If this is correct I give a  IMHO the race winner/leaders should be awarded a bigger point spread. :gomer:
The official rulebook gives the points as below. I agree there's not enough of a difference between the top three. Also, to me it seems over-generous to give points to non-finishers, but I suppose it means no-one goes home empty-handed. ;)
Points shall be awarded to drivers based on the position that a race car finished in a competition as follows:
Finishing Position / Points Earned
1 - 31
2 - 27
3 - 25
4 - 23
5 - 21
6 - 19
7 - 17
8 - 15
9 - 13
10 - 11
11 - 10
12 - 9
13 - 8
14 - 7
15 - 6
16 - 5
17 - 4
18 - 3
19 - 2
20 - 1
In addition, points will be awarded to qualifier(s) as follows: At road course events, one (1) point will be awarded to the fastest qualifier in the first event day qualifying session and one (1) point will be awarded to the fastest qualifier in the second event day qualifying session. At oval events, one (1) point will be awarded to the fastest qualifier. These points will be awarded at the conclusion of qualifying and are not contingent on the position of the entrant in the starting line-up. These points will not be awarded in cases where qualifying is not held. One (1) point will be awarded to the driver with fastest race lap. One (1) point will also be awarded to each driver that leads one or more laps. One (1) point will be awarded to the driver who gains the most positions from their grid position to finishing position.

There was a big discussion back when this new point system was announced out of the blue. I liked the old system. I can see where giving points to more drivers/teams might help when doing sponsorship pitches ("We scored x points last season."), but the winner needs to get a bigger share.
