Gangrel and I were looking over a racecars for sale website, and found this pic of Tyrell's 1970 March driven by Jackie Stewart.
This photo gave us some question.....

What is the metal cylinder on the right rear of the car? The hose is too high to be a fuel pickup....
What do the experts think?

It could be a completely aftermarket kind of thing.... we're just not sure....

I think it is the resevoir for Jackie's "trucker's friend": he pissed himself a lot in that POS.
Perhaps a coolant resevoir since it seems plumbed with coolant pipe sized tubing and connected to a catch tank.

I don't recall that on the back of the car when it was raced, yes I'm dating myself again, but my thinking is that if the car was used for historic racing, they may have added that as a fuel tank. One of the serious problems with the original March F1 car were the fuel tanks hanging on the side, the Pinto was a safety car compared to that design!

I don't know if i'd be comfortable with a fuel tank that is attached to the rear frame rails....
But then again, its the new IRL safety device!
Forget about those nasty back injuries because your irl sled goes rearward into a wall. With this new device, the second the frame rail touches the outer wall, the explosion hurtles your car away from the impact zone, ensuring that those nasty tranny spine injuries never happen again..... :gomer:

OK upon further review, I looked up a few pics of the car actually racing along with the other MARCH 701's in 1970 and they all had that tank. Wild guess, would be some sort of coolant tank or possibly oil. As far as safety goes, that car is light years ahead of an IRL sled, as far as keeping my wife, I just baffle her with my brilliance and by the time she figures out I have none, she just gives up and waits for my next outburst of brilliance!! :D ;)

A normal size and location for an oil tank in that era. Most common to Cosworth powered cars of that timeframe.
A very necessary item for a dry sump engine.
Oil tank's moved forward to just behind the driver and then to a position between the engine and transmission in later years.

Thanks, bit steep if you ask me. A historically significant car (man, I cant spell a lick) and an interm car for Uncle Ken. Siffert, Amon, Mario and Ronnie all drove cars just like this one, as it was March's first attempt at F1. Ronnie drove the wheels off a privateer car. Jackie does not have alot of pleasant things to say about this car. Rather straight forward design with cost in mind. Mr. STP Andy stepped up to the plate, along with Firestone. In doing this, March set the tone for being in racing to make money.
Neat car, and a hoot to drive I can only imagine

Although Jackie Stewart never liked the March, he did win both the 1970 Spanish Grand Prix and the non-championship Race of Champions with it, and Chris Amon took his only F1 victory (also non-championship) in his version. So the 701 was actually March's most successful F1 car ever -- it was all downhill after that...

Give an Englishman a bit of metal and he will invariably do something silly with it.
I do like the steam engine designation 2-4-0 for the design, though, since it probably drove as if on rails.

You're not kinding there--I've seen Tyrrell's driven by JYS or Cevert significantly cheaper than this March.

There are two kinds of owners with race cars on offer. One group is actually trying to sell their cars for cash money, the other group is listing their cars just for drill to troll for suckers, trades, or even new social contacts of interest. These kind of listings are more like a dog marking a gate post every day. It's generally easy to tell the difference between the two.

Or to just show off their car: "Look what I have!" You can always tell these listings in Road & Track, the owner gives his full name to ensure everyone knows it's his! :laugh:
