To some it may seem strange that I, at the mature age of 36 play video games. Considering that I grew up with video games, as did the rest of my generation, it’s just something I’ve always done. It started with the original Pong, and then years blowing my allowance at the arcade in the mall, then early PC and video console games. This brings me to the current PC and consoles. I have a couple of work buddies that are into gaming and the three of us love to review video games. We love to read reviews of video games and then review the video game reviews (yes, I am a geek)! I had my own game review site in the late 90’s which was fun, but race forums put that to an end.
In the past two months I’ve finished up a couple of games that I thought were so good, that I’d recommend them to my OC family. And if you don’t play yourself, these would make great gifts for someone you may know who does.
1) Call of Duty (PC)– This World War II first person shooter didn’t define the genre, it just re-wrote it. Call of Duty picks up where the smash hit Medal of Honor left off. Where Medal of Honor was ‘Saving Private Ryan’, literally, Call of Duty takes everything great about Medal of Honor and intensifies it by double, dropping you off behind enemy lines. The attention to detail is amazing and the graphics will make you think you are in occupied France. Call of Duty is not suitable for children, but if you are an adult and like war games, Call of Duty will leave you short of breath with nightmares of SS troops breaking down your door!
2) Prince of Persia (PC, PS2, GC and Xbox) Based in medieval Persia, this game brings the old side scrolling game to 3d and more. From the French-Canadian developer Ubisoft, makers of the 2002 smash Xbox hit Splinter Cell, Prince of Persia is the smoothest, most fun game I’ve played in years. Accompanied by a neighboring countries princess, the prince must stop the evil wizard from unleashing the Sands of Time which would, of course, destroy the world. The Prince uses his amazing acrobatic skills to run on walls, swing from chandeliers and leap over enemies while wielding his sword. This game progresses in such a smooth, scripted manner with a mystery around every corner, I hardly wanted to put the controller down. While this game has been ported to all platforms, it was made for the Xbox and that is where it truly excels. As the graphics are as good as it’s PC brother, but the Xbox controller is much better suited for the Princes manuviuers. This game has a Teen rating.
Honorable mention
1) Need for Speed: Underground (PC, PS2, GC and Xbox) The best to date from the popular Need for Speed series of games. This game goes after the import crowd, so there aren’t any of those old boring Ferreri’s and Lamborginy supercars. This is all about underground street racing and building up your car of choice to take on you next challenge. The thing that makes this game so fun is that there are different race modes. Drag race, Drift, point to point racing. Underground really keeps you interested. It’s one of the few arcade style racing games that I’ve actually finished. Most you just hope into and race around for a bit unitl you grew tired of it. The graphics are superb and the ‘feeling’ of speed is the best I’ve ever seen in a video game bar none. Everything else seems to be in slow motion compared to Underground.
2) Project Gotham 2 (Xbox exclusive) The follow up to the criticly acclaimed Project Gotham, Project Gotham 2 brings improved pysics and graphics to an already incredible game. Where Need for Speed Underground is total arcade style, Project Gotham 2 blends sim physics into arcade fun. If you’ve never witnessed the graphins in this gam, you’re missing out. The attention to detail is second to none. Need for Speed Underground is the only race game I can think of that even comes close in this area. This is a must have race game for anyone who races in video games. Oh, and this one has Ferrari’s.
