I had another chance to talk with the guy who is involved (from the Indy Power & Light [IPL]) side of the deal, that there will be an announcement shortly on lighting the fabled IMS track.
He's not a real big race fan (most in Indy just know Gomer500 & Hivkyard400 anyway) but he said that they are just about on terms with FTG&Company. Guy said its going to be massively expensive - due to the size of the place, but that he was told off the record that sagging 500 TV #s are the compelling factor. He went on to make an educated guess that one or BOTH of the races may be run at night, and it won't be Sunday night for the EARL500. Something about NASCAR already has their race that night.
So that leaves Saturday night or Monday night (he knows more than he's telling me - that's for sure), and my guess is Monday night. It would only make sense that FTG cut his losses and toss every other tradition out the window by running a week long "Month of May"....soemthing like quals on the first weekend, practice sessions and other stuff during the week...maybe a second quals, WTF....hell, anything is possible with this FTG moron.
But what he did say that was very interesting is that "its gonna look alot like what NASCAR does at Daytona in February...."
Watever that means.
Thanks Tony. :shakehead

Yup. The invasion of the horizontally-challenged blue haired old tarts with the #3 tattoed on parts of their bodies that no one should ever have to look at.
Besides God and their "specialist" doctor I suppose.
Thanks ToeKnee.
So on the colder years, will the track and tire temps be adequate for the wagons to run safely at 200+ ? Post race traffic along with fans that have been drinking all day..... sounds like a good move. :shakehead

OH BROTHER, why am I getting thoughts of the Daytona Mafia announcing that this will be the last year for the 600 at Charlotte, to be moved to Indianapolis for a SUPER week of speed. The NASCAR All Star Race or whatever they call that contrived event on Friday night, The IRL 500 running a new "traditional" Saturday night race, followed by Sundays Coca Cola-Checkers-Bombardier-Rachels-Classy Chassis 600, all at night and all for one ticket. Oh and for the true traditionalist, the annual Night Before the 500, will get higher ratings than the actual IRL 500! :shakehead :saywhat:

OK, I've been out of action for ages, somebody bring me up to date. Is Tony going to run the 500 at night in some future year?
Geezuz, what about all the sprint car guys that have to get back to Eldora for the Sunday night Final? They're half the 500 field by now, right?

Lighting IMS for the 500 would be as stupid as it could get.

When I read the title of this thread, before reading anything else, I thought, "Well, of course! If they run at night, you can't see how empty the stands are!" ;)

Ask and ye shall receive. Feel free to add as you see fit....
I run my
Crapwagons at night
So I can flim & flam
The folks that always stood behind my dream…
I run my
Crapwagons at night
So I can hide the stands
And make aluminum so it don’t gleam…
‘Cause….
The fans have failed me,
They just don’t wanna see,
That I am the rightful King
To open wheel racing
I run my
Crapwagons at night
So I can hide the fact
That our cars just aren’t pleasing to the eye….
I run my
Crapwagons at night
So I can So I can
Do the payoff/kickbacks on the sly….
‘Cause…
I paid Rog & Chip,
But no one gives a s****,
And I even got Robert Clarke,
Those Ilmor motors bark,
But still no one wants to watch…………
I run my
Crapwagons at night
So I can so I can,
Make one last ditch effort at TV…….
I run my
Crapwagons at night
‘Cause I’ve spent, millions and those
kicking screaming bastards STILL laugh at me!

BRAVO ..... AUTHOR..... AUTHOR..... BRAVISIMO!!!!! :)
 Great stuff JT.
As most of you don't know, JT was the president of the Corey Hart fan club (Ontario chapter) during the '80s.
Who's gonna do the "Crapwagons At Night" sung to the tune of "Sunglasses At Night" parody?
He watches his crapwagons at night/
And follows their nav lights in flight.
Now handing off to the much more talented Bert Backbreaker...

Can't agree more.....I hope this is just a rumour, cause other wise it is just "sheer lunacy"
John
Well done, JT!!

This just in:
To all EARL 500 Gomers.
To save money on electricity, there will be only lights in pitlane, to see round the rest of the track you will have to fit funny lights to your crapwagon, these are provided by IMS at a cost of $300,000, you will require these lights for the 500
Thanks from the team at IMS
and also rumor out is that the new lighting systems on the crapwagon increases downforce and adds weight thus keeping them on the ground and making poll time for the 500 closer to 100mph that we expected

Since tradition doesn't mean anything anymore they should just wait & run the race on the 4th of July and give the folks a 2-for-1 deal: a car race and fireworks all in one show.

How about a three-fer: a car "race," fireworks and an air show.

When they tried that in Atlanta, SMI decided not to have them back.
