I don't like the red light as "no new posts". To me a red light means "you must stop" which implies that the thread has been closed.

Maybe the first time you visit here, but once you learn what it means a person will understand that red means no new post (unless the person is really dumb, but I can see a benefit to confusing some people into not visiting threads ;) )

How about ALT text for the images... that way, if you leave your mouse over the image, it will display a helpful hint?
