A long time family friend just finished 4 years of college. He needs a break before he enters the real world and has taken up golfing, along with the new pursuit that goes with obtaining a higher education (job).

I could get him a gift card (http://www.menswearhouse.com/).

Or he needs some woods 1, 3, 5, so I need h-e-l-p. What? Where? Quality. Not too pricey.

These guys sell good quality knock-offs, (Just like your good pal :gomer: ).
They have woods and irons. I bought a set of Armour 845s lookalikes for a fraction of the cost of the real thing. They're pretty much indistinguishable. They (at the time) used either True Temper or UST graphite shafts, and you pick the grips. I got custom length shafts because of my skeletal malformation, and I think they cost about $150 for 3-PW.

I've ordered from these guys before and they've been excellent to deal with. Get your order in early enough and they'll ship it on the same day.

Adams makes nice stuff; these are $219 for the set.

The Tommy Armours are a steal at $110:

Shipping will probably run ~$15 or so; if you spend more than $150 it's free.

Golf clubs are sort of a personal item in the way that as a player, you really want to pick out the club you use.

I would recommend the gift card and let him decide on what to buy. Just get an AMEX gift card and that way he can spend it any place.

JMHO.

Brick, in SoCal, I would suggest you visit a Roger Dunn shop--they usually have a good selection and reasonable prices. I have only purchased on line when I was buying a club I was already familiar with, so a gift card to a shop would be preferable to a website. IMHO

Jeez, Brickman, way to give the guy a stressful hobby before he even has a job! Oh well, at least it isn't the motorized crack that so many of us here are hopelessly addicted to... :D

No self-respecting golfer would be caught dead with a 5 wood in his golf bag. That's what long irons are for. Apply the extra 5 wood money towards a quality driver and spoon (3 wood). Like Taylor Mades.

Actually, he is a beginning golfer and as I found out when I was starting out, the long irons are the hardest clubs to get a good grasp on when trying to achieve distance and accuracy.

Now that I don't play much anymore I've put the 5 wood back in my bag as I just can't consistently hit the 3 iron anymore.

There is so much turnover with clubs that you can buy nice used set of irons for cheap at a place like Golfsmith.

Ans for God's sakes don't steer someone starting out away from a 5 wood. That can be the easiest to hit. What's next, telling him to stay away from the cavity backs and go for blades?

Sage advice, T7. As with AV equipment, there are personal tastes and nuances involved with golf equipment. One size does not fit all. IMHO.

Goody, goody, another chance to stick my nose in and give an opinion on something I don't know anything about. :gomer:

Truthfully, I read this thread as a chance to learn something. I did! Lots of stuff about 5 woods and a big laugh from Sean about giving someone a stressful hobby.

My conclusion is that Brickman should buy a set of new (or used) clubs locally as long as they can be exchanged once the budding golfer gives them a swing or two. Same effect as giving a gift certificate, just more difficult to wrap. :)
