I wonder if it will beat the track record?

If Laguna Seca was a little closer to me I'd drive over there just to see that. Hopefully we'll get to see it on TV.

Champ cars were a couple of seconds faster at their peak than they were the first time CART ran at Montreal where they were six seconds slower. So you figure with all other things being equal an F1 car should be at least four seconds under the Champ car track record at Laguna Seca.

This is a demonstration run, not qualifying or race trim. Minimal set-up work, take it out and bang out a few laps, maybe some donuts and try not to get any sand on the $50,000 steering wheel. :)

Holy crap!

I'll bet he hit the dip at the apex of T6.

That is just wrong. Are there any more pictures or story related to this crash?

I can't find ANYTHING on it, other than the posting of the pic on honda-tech.com with no explanation of the photo. I Googled for any articles on it, and the only thing I could find was one from today saying he did a 1:09 and that he really liked Laguna Seca. :saywhat:

If its indeed for real, then I'm having a hard time deciding if he is the luckiest man in the world for getting out unscathed, or the unluckiest for having to come back to the pits and explaining to the owner how he just destroyed Schumacher's World Championship Ferrari.

Thats a 2000 spec Ferrari and thats probably one of the ones sold to private people (Ferrari has been doing that with old F1 cars these days, and teaching people how to drive em). No relation to this monterey historics event.

Well, I've read some postings on Atlas about people's experience at the Historics, but nobody mentions this.

Also, I'd think that Bertollini would have a custom painted helmet, unless he borrowed one while in Monterey.

If it's a Photoshop, though, it's damn good: you can see his leg reflection in the bulkhead.

[edit - Rogue Leader, I assume you meant "Monterey Historics" and not "Goodwood", but if that's a 2000 spec, then this happened at a different time. I'm amazed we haven't seen this picture before.]

Here is the thread where the pic originated, I hope the guy explains the origin of it.

From that thread:

Since Ferrari was the featured manufacture this year, Ferrari brought MS 2003 (5 GP Win) F1 car, the F1 2002, F1 2001, 2000, 1998 and 1997 Formula 1 cars. For those who don't understand, it's been about 12 years since Ferrari was the featured manufacture at the Historics.

Ferrari brought the 4th F1 test driver Adreina behind Luca to run the 2003 car. All 6 cars took to the track at the same time on Sat for practice. Two of the cars were rented out from Ferrari and one of those renters lifted in turn 6 at a high rate of speed. Well enough said, you'll have to watch SpeedTV to see the results of lifting at turn 6 at Monterey.

Yeah I meant Monterey i changed it.... Its definitely a 2000 spec you can tell by the livery and sidepod shape. That doesnt look like whoever was driving it was a ferrari employee, considering the "adjusted" marboro livery on the back. Probably a smack up at a track day for one of the customer cars.

Thanks Rich, I didn't notice that. The thread had been brought back after a few days of inactivity and I just assumed it was one of the earlier posts in the thread.

When you copy the picture it is entitled "turn-6-done-wrong" Understatement of the year, perhaps.

I'd say I was right:
Story about laptimes (http://www.montereyherald.com/mld/montereyherald/sports/9413480.htm)

The fastest cars around Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca remain those from the Champ Car World Series.

Though nothing was official, Ferrari factory test driver Andrea Bertolini chased after the Laguna Seca track record Sunday in a Formula One exhibition on the final day of the 31st Monterey Historic Automobile Races, but he came up about 1.4 seconds short.

Don't know about that guy who bent up the Ferrari! Quite the picture! But certainly it wasn't in the quest for a lap record.

That was a rich dude who bought an old F1 car. Thats his last name on the engine cover. He also ran in his 250 after this happened!

Its on crash.net.

OT - I was just looking at a track map for Laguna Seca. Has anyone else ever noticed that there is a big screw at the end of the Rahal Straight? :gomer:

(Oh Kevin Coogan had a wreck like that at indy too.. I think hes still a mess also...)

Methinks someone made a mess of WELDING two Ferrari's together :shakehead

There's some other kind of failure there. How do you rip the whole nose off of an F1 car at the front bulkhead WITHOUT tearing at least one of the front corners off of the car???

2DB
08-20-04, 03:57 PM
I agree with RacinM3 it's too clean of a break and a lack of damage to the, viewable, nose. Something else was helping out in that carnage.
