didn't look like there was much damage... put the car down too early (about .2 seconds) during the pit stop and the left rear didn't get on ... did about 1/3 a lap, then Mr. Wheel departed

Actually, he smashed the back of it up during the warmup, and the crew had to work fairly quickly to get it ready for the race.

Yup, $5k I believe. I don't think he knew he lost a wheel until after he got out of the car. He was trying to get out of the gravel pit and looked very surprised when he saw the wheel was gone.

Did you notice the left wheelchanger's reaction on the replay of the ill-fated pit stop? Poor guy clapped his hands to his visor and shook his head as he walked away...he knew that the car dropped too soon to tighten the nuts properly.
