View Full Version : Attention NYC Area Folks
Since the Northeast is ususally devoid of things Champcar I thnik it is interesting that their are a number of things happening in NYC
1. "Serenade of Time and Speed" Motorsports exhibit, presented by Champ Car. Fine artwork from the most celebrated artists and photographers in Motorsports and a Herdez Competition Champ Car will be on display from September 28th thru October 12th. A silent auction of the art inspired by "Time and Speed" will benefit the Association of The Hole in the Wall Camps charity.

2. I received a postcard in the mail announcing that Mario Andretti will be grand marshall of this years Columbus Day Parade on October 12. To mark this event the parade sponsors also announced:

8:00 AM to 10:00 PM; October 4th – October 6th;
8:00 AM to 5:30 PM October 7th and 8th
Exhibitions at New York’s Grand Central Terminal celebrate this year’s Grand Marshal and the spectacular Alpine region of Lombardy, which in 2005 hosts the FIS International World Alpine Ski Championships and the UCI International Mountain Bike Championships. Join us to see some of Mario’s race-winning cars, larger-than-life photographs, and videos of Mario and of skiing and mountain bike championships.
The post card indicates that Mario's 1978 F1 Lotus , 1969 Hawk, a Ford Fairlane Stock Car and a 64 Sprinter will be on display!!!!

Might be a prelude to the announcement of the "Grand Prix du Potholes". It's closer than China and just the people looking out their windows would bring the eyeball count up to at least 250k.

If they could pull it off it would be amazing... but it's been attempted before and has yet to be pulled off.

The CART NY Grand Prix was proposed under mayor David Dinkins and was supposed to run between the twin towers, however obviously thats out of the question now.
However even Bernie Eccelstone acknowledged that a major auto race is needed in the country's largest consumer market. Thats why NASCAR wants to build an oval in Staten Island.
Most people around here figure within 10 Years F1 or Champ Cars will be screaming down the streets of some area of NYC....

I am not NYR. I have been a lurker for a while both here and at 7th Gear.

They even had a poster promoting the race. I remember seeing it in a post on 7G, but I can't seem to locate it. :(

THIS WAS RACING CONNNECTION TO THE 9/11 TRAGEDY.
ONLY 5,000 OF THIS SPECIAL TRIBUTE POSTER WILL BE PRODUCED AND ALL THE PROCEEDS FROM THE SALE OF THIS POSTER WILL GO TO THE NEW YORK MAYOR RUDOLPH GIULIANI'S TWIN TOWERS FUND. SIZE: 18"X25".

Doesn't look like it would have been a very challenging race course, but it would have been cool..
What was cool in that link was that Bernie Eccelstone was looking at roosevelt field here on long island for a F1 GP. Man that would have rocked its 5 minutes north of me!!!
I always wanted to see the Meadowlands CART race but never got a chance to go. Hopefully the rumblings of a possible F1 GP in the NYC area, and possibly A1 GP in NYC are true.

thats not A1's fault (which I am actually interested in), its Bernie's fault... Bernie and his insurmountable greed... One day it WILL blow up in his face, too bad the likes of Jordan, Jaguar, and Minardi are getting the crap end of the stick.

Well,
I went and was able to take some pictures. However , it was with and "old" fashioned film camera (long story about the digital...). I'm getting the film back on Saturday so by Sunday I should have them scanned. I'll put them online and post the link here...
Really a great presentation of Mario's life and passion with racing. They even had a video telling his story. Yes, they do have his '84 Champcar on display... :D

Did they not have the Lotus 79 and the Ford Fairlane on display? The CC Parade website indicate that they would be their. They made no mention of the 84 Champcar.

Yeah neitehr the Lotus or Fairlane were there, and the Alfa Romeo Sportscar was not Marios, it was identical to his, it was one of the team cars.
