I hear you, G. My sister has orders to be here with the beer by noon on Thanksgiving--we're going to need it! :D I'm already stressed out with preparations to have my crazy family here for Thanksgiving--but when it's all done and the bird is on the table, I will be truly thankful, and happy to have them.

Oh no you don't - my family is far crazier than any other...and it seems that this year in particular they have set aggressive new goals of craziness...Bushmills might do the trick - I've never really got "toasted" around the family on the holidays...it would be nice to be the "pain in the ass" for once, just once...think of the great stories that could come of it... :)

Christmas will be interesting with my dad's side of the family. Let's just say we're on opposite ends of the political spectrum and one of us began the month considering emigrating... should be interesting. :shakehead

I'm guessing that a bottle of Bushmills alone won't suffice. A hooker might be a nice festive touch, and you get bonus points if she doesn't speak much English. :D I'm guessing that would keep them off balance around you for at least a full year. If you plan to get real drunk, make sure you find a hooker that's a good driver and find out where she lives in advance in case she decides to steal your car when you are passed out.

There is a difference between cultivating a certain eccentricity that keeps others off balance and out and out boorishness, and only you can decide which is appropriate. I've always admired the grand jesture when it comes to family, which is why one of my first acts as an adult was to move 3000 miles away then never visit. I love 'em dearly, just not in the same time zone please.:thumbup:

This can work also, but then it is important to remember to find a girl young enough to be innapropriate and who doesn't speak the language well. In a pinch, any pretty girl with a trashy look will do if you get her drunk to the point of belligerence. :laugh:

Also, whatever you say, speak just a bit too loud and when people speak to you, allow awkward silences to follow when you simply stare at them. Trust me, it will be a Thanksgiving dinner that will become a family legend. :thumbup:

She's right, you have to be human about it, it's family afterall. Calling is fine. You speak, have a nice visit, then the phone goes down and that's it for another week. Casual drop in? The chances are remote with 1000+ mile buffer zone. Better yet if you can live someplace that requires a passport entry visa for them to come visiting. That really does shut down all possibilities of the surprise (choke, gag) visit.

Now if your sister drops a hint about being "out in your neck of the woods," then it's time for that emergency trip to Nome or Vladivostok. Nobody will suggest "just meeting you there for a few days" if your destination is either above the Arctic Circle, in Siberia, or both. Or at least nobody in my family ever has... :gomer:

If anyone does break through all the defenses and press the point, and you simply can't get out of it, try taking them somewhere memorable. I admit to having taken family members who decided to "just drop in" while traveling in this area to the Mosquito Festival in Paisley, OR. Never had them ring me up for a return engagement on that one... :D
