That's Honda's twin turbo 1.5l F1 engine from the mid/late 80s.

To be precise it is an "exploded" view of a Honda RA168E twin turbo 1.5 litre V6 Formula 1 racing engine circa 1988. It produced over 1000 hp, and it had to do this while consuming less than 150 liters of fuel during a race.
This powered Senna/Prost McLaren cars that won 15 of 16 races and 10 1-2 finishes. Combined with Honda powered Lotus they took 1-2-3-4 at the British GP. The team won the constructors championship with 5 races left to go.

Ah, now I remember, that engine ran at 4 bar. The backpressure from the turbo cost that thing 250 HP. It could have hit 1250 with 4 bar and no turbo. :D

So you're saying that it would have been more powerful if normally aspirated? Somehow I don't buy that given how dominant it was...

I'm saying if it ran at 4 bar and was naturally aspirated, yes it would've approached 1250, it's the reaching the 4 bar with no forced induction that's the problem... the point being the turbo backpressure loss, not if you get with an n/a engine, 1250 HP
If I can positively identify 13 of the parts in that picture, where does that put me on the dumb@$$-to-genius scale? :confused: :gomer:

I remember reading somewhere that their dynos only went to 1000 hp...they stopped being able to measure the hp on these engines long before the turbos were outlawed...I remember hearing the same thing about the bmw turbo...

A full beer can will not collapse. Something to do with the incompressabilty of liquids. So, 'bird can't have his beer and drink it, too.

I'm at 17 parts.
You know it is kinda impressive that there are actually so few parts to an F1 engine. (though the photo does not include any bolts or fasteners)

You guys aren't counting each individual spark plug, coil pack, main bolts, pistons, valves and seals?
Heck, I figure if two turbos count as individual peices and each cam counts as four, and each head as two then it's fair to include the above as se perate pieces.

No six spark plugs is one part. Two heads are one part. Coil packs etc. And a recount puts it at 19.
I just can't identify some of the hoses and such at the top. :)

Yup, and I didn't even give myself credit for knowing that the con-rod is a seperate piece of the piston. :thumbup:
I must admit, the number would have been a lot lower if I hadn't worked a temp job inspecting parts at a Honda plant for six months when I got layed off back in 1999.

valves, rockers, springs, you've got a lot of parts to add to your total that you've lumped into one ;) :D
