France's 'Silver' news

NASCAR founder Bill France Jr. recently raised eyebrows when he alluded to expected news out of open-wheel racing. Speculation immediately turned to common engine specifications for NASCAR and the IRL as the latter considers major changes for 2007.

It turns out the Jan. 29 announcement at the Copper World Classic in Phoenix has little to do with the IRL. International Speedway Corp. will detail its plan to stage five of the U.S. Auto Club's reworked Silver Crown races in 2006.

USAC has developed a prototype speedway car that will allow the Silver Crown division to race on tracks larger than 1 mile in length. Previously, the series only raced on shorter tracks that have slower cornering speeds.

According to USAC president Rollie Helmling, the Silver Crown series in 2006 will add three 1.5-mile tracks -- Homestead, Kansas and Chicagoland -- to go with the two ISC-owned tracks it currently utilizes (Phoenix and Richmond, Va.).

I've really been hoping that is just an unflattering paintjob on the speedway silver crown car.

Honestly, if TG had done something inventive like the above car a decade ago, I'm not so sure there'd be nearly as much animosity towards him. Rather than try to wrestle control of American formula car racing by producing "CART-Lite" he would have been much better off thinking outside the box and going in a new direction for his race. We might have still thought he was an idiot, but at least he would have been an idiot with a new idea.

I agreed with you when you said this in 2003 about the new Silver Crown Car.

"If this thing works out, this would be the perfect formula for the IRL to adopt after the Toyota and Honda contracts run out after 2005. I wouldn't be shocked to see these cars running at Indy in May 2006. Spend a year or two developing the formula, then make it the big leagues.

It's real cheap and he's already got a nationwide ladder system built in. It makes so much sense I have no doubt TG will never think of it.

It is. I saw the car in the metal, and I didn't think it looked bad. But, then again, the looks of race cars are less important to me than the racing they put on.

Nose and sidepods will be controlled, dimension wise, but will not be single-sourced. There will be some room for design in it.

Yeah, they are ugly as hell, but I'm not going to discredit the drivers of them. Those cars look hard as hell to drive, I have the utmost respect for short track racers, even if it isn't close to being my preferred form of racing.

Humpy Wheeler proposed fenders that blended into the sidepods for open wheel cars a few years ago. This car is about as close as anyone has come to that.
