3 Indiana men charged in death of pal trying out 'bulletproof' vest

Daniel Wright was going to join the military, and he wanted some experience.

So the 20-year-old went to a field in Hobart, donned what he thought was a bulletproof vest and turned to his friends with instructions.

"Shoot me. I'm ready," Wright said.

Later, his friends concocted a story about a shooting on a Gary street, police said.

One day later, police had uncovered the lie, and detectives detailed a deadly game gone wrong.

"He voluntarily put on the vest because he wanted to experience what a .20-gauge shotgun would do," Hobart, Ind., police Lt. Leo Finnerty said Friday.

The experience left Wright mortally wounded at the hand of a friend, not, as his companions originally reported, murdered by a stranger outside a Gary liquor store.

Now, three Hobart men have been charged in connection with Wright's shooting death.

Finnerty said the trio made up the story after Wright, 20, of Crown Point, was fatally shot before dawn Thursday during a bizarre test of what he thought was a bulletproof vest. It turned out to be a flak jacket, which Finnerty said is not designed to stop a bullet.

"A toxicology report will be filed next week to determine if drugs or alcohol were involved in the incident, Pastrick said."

Or, maybe they're just really ****ing stupid. :shakehead

That's my favorite part of the story. I guess he thought they play paintball at boot camp.

.20 gauge? Is that standard issue for the Jihad :saywhat:

Dear Mr. Wright,

On behalf of a couple billion intelligent human beings, I'd like to express our thanks for removing yourself from the human gene pool.

Respectfully,

.20 gauge? Is that standard issue for the Jihad :saywhat: Right, probably what the geniuses could lay their hands on.

Not to get too technical about a "Darwin" story, but I'm left wondering if this is among the 30% of the facts the news media gets wrong on average. Unless they used a rifled slug or buckshot, I can't really imagine the shot from a 20ga actually penetrating even a WWII flack jacket. As a kid I 'customized' an old army jacket I had with a 20ga 3" magnum load of #4 shot from 10ft. Most of the shot didn't fully penetrate both layers of heavy fabric. Buckshot doesn't come in the heavy sizes for a 20ga., just #1 as I recall, so I'm left wondering if the report is accurate. I guess nothing is impossible, but I've shot up a lot of inanimate objects (none belonging to others) and hunted for years with a 20ga, and that's a pretty light load to be killing people with. You have to pay close attention to what you are doing to successfully murder a rabbit or a medium sized bird like a pheasant in my experience.

Brings back memories. Used to have artillery battles with shotguns when I was a kid. We'd shoot at each other across a valley. With a good arc and enough distance it was just like lead rain :D And I'm not even from NW Indiana :gomer:
