Honda expects stronger Toyotas in the near future
Clarke - IndyCar officials helping Toyota catch up
Expected performance boost for Toyota engines
Honda dominated the IndyCar Series in 2004 and so far there is no indication 2005 will be any different as they have won two of the first three races. However, their performance advantage may soon be reduced by Indy Racing League rule makers, according to Honda Performance Development head Robert Clarke.
“We do have some concerns, particularly with our friends at Toyota,” said Clarke, whose HPD factory has taken over most development duties from original engine designer Ilmor. “The IRL have granted Toyota permission to modify certain closed or restricted areas for development within their engine, due to our very strong performance last year. And although the HI5R remains strong, we expect the Toyota to show a jump in performance either here at Motegi or at the next event, the Indy 500.”
Through three races in 2005, Honda and Chevrolet have had an apparent horsepower advantage over Toyota, though Sam Hornish, Jr., did score a victory for Toyota at the handling dependant Phoenix International Raceway.
Speaking from prepared notes at a Tokyo press conference designed to promote the upcoming Twin Ring Motegi event, Clarke focused the majority of his attention on Honda's recent successes before noting the possibility of stiffer competition from Toyota in the future.
“The IRL technical rules are very strict, and we're finding that big power increases are becoming more and more difficult to find. The HI5R is a more refined, more mature engine than the HI4R, last year's predecessor, with improved power, drivability and fuel economy. Within off season testing and the first three events, the HI5R remains the top performing engine within the IRL series,” said Clarke.
Interestingly, the Penske Racing Toyota's seemed almost capable of running with the Honda's in the opening events. IndyCar rules require a minimum of two outlets per manufacturer, and Penske Racing serves that role alongside Toyota Racing Development. Originally building the engines to the exact same spec as TRD, it appeared early this season that Penske Racing had found a way to get more power from the Toyota and was going in their own direction.
With this new development, the Penske Toyota'a could wind up on equal horsepower footing with the top Honda's, while the rest of the Toyota contingent gets a boost up the ladder, particularly the Ganassi Racing squad that has struggled somewhat in 2005.
Chevrolet, the third IndyCar engine manufacturer found the horsepower necessary to compete during last winter but with just two accident prone Panther Racing entries they have not gotten the results prove their improvement.
For his part, Clarke has no plans to ease up on their development work in the face of this stiffer competition.
“Of course we are doing our best to maintain performance and continue development of the product to stay ahead of both Toyota and Chevrolet.”

Floyd may be sandbagging. Wait until race day. FToyota absolutely LOVES, I mean LOVES to beat Honda on their "home turf"....
Remember the SST that Toyota tried at Motegi back in the CART days ?
I just used to love it when Porky Page would call it " Mon-Tegi".... what an absolute BUFFOON.....

I predict another fantastic Scott Sharp-like start.... How long before be scrapes the wall, stays out with bent suspension, over drives the thing, and takes out a bunch of the "lead" pack, which are seperated by only .0000019 secs!!!!
Drone, drone, drone around the paperclip.....
Danica, Sham, Sharpie and Gay-lio. What a quartet !
Recipe for disaster, IMO.
