toob·ing 'tü-bi[ng], 'tyü- verb 1946 1 : the act of leisurely floating down a river with no time constraints or worries; 2 : what Ank can be found doing each weekend during the summer; 3 : a popular activity on fresh-water rivers in warmer climates
tub·ing 'tü-bi[ng], 'tyü- noun 1845 1 : material in the form of a tube; also : a length or piece of tube 2 : a series or system of tubes

the day draws nigh. Memorial Day weekend begins tomorrow.

honestly, it should be an olympic sport of some sort, certainly moreso than figure skating, it takes quite a level of endurance to keep your balance in a toob while throwing down cans of cheap s***** beer for 6 hours on end.

A bunch of friends and I, many years ago, used to float down a river in a small pack of canoes three or four times every summer. One of the canoes towed an inner tube fitted with a secured plastic tarp that carried our keg, packed in ice.

We used to go tubing on the Apple River near Somerset Wisconsin. Back in the days before everyone got married and had kids. :( Not sure I could start drinking first thing in the morning after crawling out of a tent now anyway. ;)

Toobing can also include being drug behind a boat in an inflatable tube, or other type device, down a lake at either slow or ludicrous speeds. "Cracking the whip", is terminology that relates to this type of toobing.

In Chi-Town, our annual tradition was to join all the other FIB's and go up to Sauk City, WI and spend 3 days, 2 nights on the Wisconsin River. Lots and lots o beer... but never a keg. Go Lizzerd ! ! !

Gruene River!! It was more than likely the Guadalupe River.

We used to have some nice setups. We could have floated a small brewery down the river!!

I remember going to the Wurstfest as a kid and having a great time watching the drunks stumble around the festival area of New Braunsfels. Every night some dumbass would forget that the Comal wasn't as deep as the Guadalupe and climb a tall tree and do a face plant into the river.

Hahahaha, nothing like google drunk chicks and seeing doods with blood gushing from their head when your 14 years old.

A bunch of friends and I, many years ago, used to float down a river in a small pack of canoes three or four times every summer. One of the canoes towed an inner tube fitted with a secured plastic tarp that carried our keg, packed in ice.Amateur!

Step one: Load supplies in rented canoes.
Step two: Float a ways, find driftwood.
Step three: Lash three canoes into a barge with driftwood across the sterns and bows using, yes, duck tape.
Step four: Pressurize the keg with the CO2 tank, pack the cooler/tap/heat exchanger thingy full of icy goodness.
Step five: float, drink, light explosives, etc.

We used to do this every year. Having the CO2 and the iced tap is awesome! Not as much ice is needed, as you can just let the keg sit in the sun under a blankie or sumptin'.

Heaven.

Best place to be is in the barge. You get to talk to everyone (single canoes have to paddle up to the bar) and you never get left behind. Hard to maneuver the beast, so best to just float.

And you'd be surprised how funny "paddle up to the bar" seems after the booze and the sun get to ya!

Couldn't stand watching the lowlifes who would sink their cans/bottles of beer, though.

In Arizona we did our tubing on the Verde river. Our tubing exbiditions to the Verde were accomplished in my massive old 1949 DeSoto Suburban 9 passenger (3 rows of bench seats & 11 ashtrays) with suicide doors and a roof rack that would handle a dozen inflated tubes no problem. A pathetically overmatched L6 flathead propelled this massive barge through the old hydra-glide manual/automatic hybrid affair. It had a clutch and a torque converter so you made one shift manually while the other one happened automatically in it's own good time. At $400 I probably overpaid, but how does one really put a value on such intangibles as style. ;)

The thing I just couldn't get over with that car was the 11 ash trays, and it was a standing joke that never got old on runs to the river. Think about it. Some guy with a degree and enough years experience to get to near the top of the styling department had to actually get up in a design review meeting and offer a compelling arguement for 11 fricking ashtrays, because you know that anything that added cost would automatically be questioned and there was only seating for 9 after all...

We liked to imagine that our future careers would be spent advocating for important technical advancements like extra ashtrays, and those of us that survived the military adventure de jour and managed to avoid mixing quaaludes automobiles weren't far wrong...

Come up north for some real action, homey. Upper Gauley in WV = class V. I ain't never tried it, but I will one of these days. Lower Gauley and New River are pretty sweet, 2. Our last trip on the New River we ended up stuck on 'Otter Rock' (as in you oughta be on the right, we went left and got hung up). The night float on the Deschutes also sounds a lot more intimidating than it was. It's very open high desert country and the full moon was so bright it was throwing shadows so on that very familiar stretch it was no more challenging than doing it in daylight. Spooky not being able to see the big reversals at the bottom of the holes, but no real danger. It did freak out some other rafters that were camping on the banks who clearly thought we were drunk and were yelling at us to stop.

toobing, what kind of redneck activity is that? It's your basic water/gravity thing. Truck or tractor inner tube, beer, young ladies with a taste for the bizarre and (here's the important bit) warm water flowing slowly. Toobing wouldn't be the same if you got hypothermia while doing it or had to wear a wetsuit, so it's a warm climate activity. It's also no good on serious whitewater since even if you don't die it interferes with beer drinking. Since clouds of biting and bloodsucking insects tend to be contrary to all day near-nakedness, it's best done in arid regions where few such insects exist.

Probably not the kind of activity that will ever loom large in Eire, just like it doesn't in the northern US climes. Even when the water does get warm enough in places like Minnesota and Michigan, the mosquitoes and deer flies demand their pound of flesh. Same for Canada where there are only two seasons, blizzard and mosquitoes. :D Thus, toobing is at it's pinnacle in the arid US southwest.

Click on "Launch Video" Now G., I distinctly recall posting that toobing was at it's pinnacle in the arid southwest, not that you couldn't do it elsewhere. Memories of floating in Michigan are still seared into my brain, including the oozing holes in the middle of raised welts where the deer flies had extracted chucks of flesh and a sea of skeeter bites. I guess the problem was that I was too young to be properly lubricated.

Regardless, I'll take the Verde River any day. No bugs, no worries about rain, tornadoes or much or anything else for that matter. About the only thing that stops the fun is when the weather to too warm or the river too low. Our rivers up here are great for whitewater, but few are good to toobing.

NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas -- New Braunfels city officials say a slate of proposed ordinances is meant to rein in rowdy tubers on the Comal and Guadalupe rivers.

The City Council plans Monday to consider rules to curb drinking by banning open alcohol containers at several riverfront parks. The council also wants to limit the size of coolers on the rivers to those that hold only a six-pack.

The new rules would also limit tubers on the Comal to one tube per person, limit the size of tubes to four square feet and require life jackets for children.

The city started cracking down on booze-fueled tubing parties and litter last summer with a ban on beer bongs and Jell-O shots. They also increased fines for noise ordinance violations.

Even so, you'll do that for maybe 2 or 3 years, I did the same. Then I grew up:eek:  . Since I have a family, I haven't been back because I know what goes on and I don't want to "expose" my kid to it.

That's 20 years of spending opportunity that goes away for the city. Although fun, the party crowd hurts more than it helps in the long run.:(
