More good news from Cleveland

Today, County officials reaffirmed their support of the annual event that showcases the beauty of downtown Cleveland and its Lake Erie shoreline to the world, announcing that the Cuyahoga County Board of Commissioners will once again serve as an official sponsor of the 2005 Champ Car Grand Prix of Cleveland Presented by U.S. Bank.

And Budweiser too....


Grand Prix officials are also proud to welcome the return of longtime event partner to this summer's race. Budweiser served as the Official Beer of the Grand Prix of Cleveland beginning at the very first race in 1982 and carried on a partnership with the event for 12 years. For the first time since 1994, Budweiser will return to the Grand Prix through its association with the House of LaRose, the local distributor for the King of Beers.

Very glad to hear this as we won't be making Cleveland this year but have high hopes for next year. It's always nice to want to go to a race that has some chance of BEING there next year. >>excuse the Friday-itis<<

The control tower, maybe? That's probably the highest point in the airport.

About casinos, I can empathize. The discussion here is about where the next casino in the Buffalo area is going to go - in downtown proper (which along with Bass Pro will be the "saviour" of the city :shakehead ), or out in the burbs (which the nimby's are having a nutty about). Don't understand why we need another casino when there are three within a 1/2 hour drive!

Since then our run-down rusty old burb has come back from the brink and is rapidly expanding, thanks in part to the MILLIONS coming in from the top grossing riverboat casino in the country. Streets, curbs, sewers, parks, rec center, lighting, housing re-hab, police station, ...1-time capital improvements for ALL to see and use. It's been amazing! Of course we didn't have to worry about it replacing a race venue or anything! :)

Sorry, but I disagree. I work with lots of lower class people at work and when they put in an Ohio Lottery machine a couple years ago these people flock to it and spend $20-50 a day. :shakehead

I just think it is a bad idea to give an already poor city's citizena even more ways to waste their money.

I have to agree Sean. No new money is spent at either lotteries or casinos - it is *after tax* money that is returned to government. In affect you have raised your own tax rate by using gaming.

Far better to lower employer taxes that may attract new business to your area then *old* money just being recycled with a scratch and win so the government and their hired casino firms can take another wack at taking it ALL this time.

Hey, here's a new idea - attract companies that MAKE SOMETHING, THAT PAY BENIFITS, THAT PAY TAXES. But you see, that wouldn't play well for the guy's that take kick backs I guess...

How you gonna pay off your debt to China if you don't make stuff to sell to them??? How is a company in Nevada contacted by your state's lottery organisation who taking 20% off the top helping anyone in your area.

You build your local economy the hard way - by producing goods and services. Casino models ONLY work in Vegas where people come from out of state to LOSE (90% of them) money.

Well, you know what? I actually believe a lot of that is MY money, they're just recycling it for me and we're putting it to some very good uses, for them too of course. The state recently passed a law allowing the casinos to cash their state aid checks! How convenient. I do not believe however that absent our casino many of these people would suddenly find they had extra cash to put toward responsible uses. The "poor" do not even come close to making up a large percentage of casino users here. I think I can safely say the casino has done more good than harm and I am pleasantly surprised.
