Normand Legault said he's had preliminary talks with NASCAR executives in an effort to bring the United States' top racing series to the road course at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.

"I would love to have it here. It is a super, super show," Legault said. "I am quite sure Canadian fans would take to NASCAR racing just like a match to dry wood."

Is it true that the circuit allows only 2 races a year.
If so....? Just asking.

If so....? Just asking. That's what I've been told by those that should know.

Legault has said in the past he would dump CCWS for NASCAR, but only if he got a Cup race, not Busch.

I think it woul d be a big mistake for NASCAR to come to Canada with only Busch to a major venue like Montreal.... especially Montreal. Quebeckers would feel insulted.

The best move NASCAR could make is to go to Mosport, and make that track their Canadian home.

As Bob Marley said, "Don't worry about a thing...". Hey, there's always Lima Peru or some such place.

This Montreal thread keeps going around and around. I guess no one in Quebec can deal with the fact that the Federal Government pay off money is GONE for good huh? :D

Old Norm is blowing smoke... (just like the forest fires)

The fact that NASCAR is a non issue with race fans in Quebec is besides the issue I guess. Just another stick in the eye to Ontario is the motive - where millions await the Cup cars...

I was thinking about the politics of this as I watched the Cubs game. I could see a Cup race in southern Ontario but French speaking Quebec ??? Stick a couple Quebecois (sp?) in cars and maybe it would work, who knows, but for a province that, from what I understand, is trying to maintain a seperate identity...

If F1 cars have braking difficulites on the Ille, how in the hell would the Bubbas last more than 10 laps???

Those tanks would take a day to go around that circuit. They'd end up dumbing it down in typical NASCAR style.

Yeah....I heard about that proposal, but I would be totally shocked if got past all the bureaucrats. Especially in the Niagara Region, they are sooooo protective of the land there!!!

Maybe if we ask nicely we can get that beret wearing, chainsmoking, beatnik added to the smilies to use as Le Gomer Québécois.

Upstate New York fans are starving for an oval race. An American dollar worth more in Canada and a location only minutes from the border are sure to bring in a large number of American fans. Niagara Falls has undergone many changes over the last couple of years, opening two Las Vegas-style casinos, world class hotels, and a host of other attractions. The track would only benefit the area's already healthy tourism industry.

1. I am an upstate New Yorker, and I am not dying for an oval race.

2. Yes, NF has undergone a tourism revitalization. But what does that have to do with attracting people from upstate NY? The old joke is that you only go to the Falls for gambling or with out of town relatives.

3. Are they going to put an oval track in the middle of a vineyard? The Niagara region is wine and cheese central. Not exactly typical NASCAR country.

4. The biggest point: the Canadian dollar is worth 88 cents US at today's exchange rate. Not exactly the selling point people think it is.

A proposed one-mile oval race track in the Niagara region is one stop closer to reality.

After a six-year battle with opponents, Canadian Motor Speedway in Fort Erie got final approval from the Ontario Municipal Board on Thursday to green light the $400-million project.

There are still some minor environment issues to be dealt with, but the major political hurdle has been jumped with the OMB rejection of a final appeal by a group opposed to the planned track.

Fort Erie? LOLi am not buying it. The region might go for another dirt modified venue. Not a $400 million cup track. And they are going to get a cup date at a one mile oval? I see something at Mosport with all its renovations and proximity to TO and Canadians more into road racing generally than an oval in Ft Erie.

Construction has now started at the site of the Canadian Motor Speedway, a $400 million project just across the border in Fort Erie.

Officials held a small, unofficial groundbreaking event earlier this month, as construction crews started preliminary site work on the speedway property just off the QEW.

Is that accurate?

Representatives from NASCAR Sprint Cup racer Jeff Gordon say they remain committed towards the development of the $400 million Canadian Motor Speedway in Fort Erie.

Pending approvals from the Ontario Ministry of Transportation and Province of Ontario, officials expect to file this spring for the necessary permits to resume construction for the massive track complex along Bowen Road and just off of the Queen Elizabeth Way.

The track, whose centerpiece is a Gordon-designed signature speedway, could see its first race take place by 2017.

So that track (actually tracks, it has both an oval and road course) is basically in Buffalo, except if you actually live in Buffalo you will have to have a passport to go to the race. And the road course is within easy driving distance of both Mosport and Watkins Glen, so it is not like that is an underserved area of the country for road courses.
