Maybe if it stays over $4 for a year or three someone will actually buy a Chevy Volt.

95% of the time I drive less than 10 miles a day. If someone came up with an electric plugin that wasn't a **** box I might seriously consider getting one. Turning the Subie on, driving 2 or 3 miles and shutting it off again is kind of hard on the engine and does not result in great mileage. It's 16 years old and has 124,000 miles on it.

OK, so you get a plug in and ...plug it in. Just where would all that "fuel" flowing into your "energy efficient" vehicle come from? I vote for a plan that runs everything on methane gas. Plenty of that around. Then I'd like to invest in the company that comes up with the converter that makes the exhaust smell like roses. How 'bout an in-home unit that pumps the gas from your bathroom directly into your garage storage tank? FILL 'ER UP...every morning before you leave for work! Probably against all the emmissions laws, huh?

The water engine has been invented many times.

List of Water Powered Car Inventors
Hi I have been following the trail of potential water powered cars for a few years now, over this time I have compiled a list of successful inventors!
Here they are!
Andriah Puharich
Archie blue
Bob Boyce
Carl Cella
Charles H. Garrett
Daniel Dingel
Hector Pierre Vaes
Nakamatsu Yoshiro
Sam Leslie Leach
Stanley Meyer
Steven Horvarth
And a few other unidentified people!
The most noteable of these was Stanley Meyer who is dead unfortunatley! In fact so are Carl Cella & Hector Pierre Vaes all before there time and under suspicious cercumstances! The rest have either been threatend, sold out or keep to them selves! Apparently it's not a good idea to threaten Big Oil companys. An internet search will find info all of these individuals!

And a liter of milk is what, $1?

devilmaster
04-24-11, 02:45 PM
And a liter of milk is what, $1?

Actually way more. A few years ago, Dairy farmers began protesting the government against supply and demand of low prices. Mega farms were overproducing on demand and flooding the market. The smaller family farmers drove their tractors on the highways to Ottawa, bottling up traffic and won a unique decision, which in the end probably spelled the doom of the small dairy farmer even quicker.

Which is, that the dairy board of Canada is allowed to set the price of industrial milk. Industrial milk is the milk made into commercial products. It is, in all effect, a milk cartel.

Every year (around Feb/Mar) the price goes up, regardless of actual dairy consumption (which actually has been going down).

Prices naturally vary depending on store to store. The major chains all have smaller, value brand chain stores as well, so you see a wonderful class system of grocery shopping. :\

So various prices that, as I shop for restaurants, I see on a daily basis.

2% milk, 2 L carton, $4 - $5
35% heavy cream, 1 L carton, $7-9 sometimes over 10 in the high falootin grocery stores
Cheddar, 5 pds block, $25.99
Mozzarella, 5 pds block, $21.99
Swiss, 5 pds block, $60-$70

So useless Canadian trivia aside, I guess the past 5 years of my life I could have had many titles.... general manager, chef, server, diswasher, cook, restauranteur.... but truthfully my title should be professional grocery shopper.

In this job its not what I mostly do, but it requires the most of my time and energy. Trying to find product we use at the cheapest rate but at stores that are in my 'shopping zone' so I'm not driving over hell's half acre for something that saves me 50 cents.... Its a constant daily battle.

But I'm a people watcher and I see those like the guy in Costco who drove out of his way on a Thursday afternoon round 2 pm, park in a humongous parking lot, walked all the way to the back of a monster building, picked out his bags of milk and left. Most of the grocery stores I hit are not in residential areas anymore. They are not 'walking distance' stores. And people drive in, buy a couple things and drive out.

We're a throwaway society. Finding alternative energies is not about saving money, its not about helping the planet. Its about being able to continue our me-first throwaway way of life.

Where's the energy crisis? As long as people don't think that they have a problem driving a couple miles when they need one little store bought item, we're fine. :\

Just wondering, why did you go with a lesser grade when they specify higher?

I was being cheap.

I almost always put the premium in - for the times I haven't, the only difference I've noticed with the lesser grades is lower gas mileage.

Just wondering, why did you go with a lesser grade when they specify higher?

It was a recommendation not an absolute requirement on the Tribeca. The older version of the H6 had some hot spots in the design that made Subaru recommend the higher octane fuel. The new H6 has been redesigned to fix that specific problem and it runs happily on regular.

I see. I was just wondering. We have a Legacy and the manual says to change oil ever 7500 miles or 6 months. So it seems like they aren't ones to say stuff unless they thought it was needed. (Just comparing to what seems like the standard of 3000 miles or 3 months.)

Elmo T
04-29-11, 06:24 AM
So you all have me wondering now, so I went I pulled up the owner's manual for the '07 Tribeca. Here it is chapter and verse:

Use unleaded gasoline with an octane rating of 91 AKI or higher.
Regular unleaded gasoline with an octane rating of 87 AKI or higher
may be used. However for optimum engine performance and
driveability, it is recommended that you use 91 AKI or higher grade
unleaded gasoline. You may experience reduced output, poor accelerator
response, and reduced fuel economy when using gasoline
with an octane rating lower than 91 AKI, depending on your
driving habits and conditions. If you experience any of these conditions
while using a lower octane rated fuel, you may want to return
to using 91 AKI octane rated fuel as soon as possible. Additionally,
if your vehicle knocks heavily or persistently, or if you are
driving with heavy loads such as when towing a trailer, the use of
91 AKI or higher grade unleaded gasoline is required.

It isn't just the US. Of the 60 million barrels to be released half will come from North America, 30% from Europe and 20% from Asia. I don't understand how the US is 100% of North America, the Canadians and Mexicans should be involved too. It does not make any sense as crude prices are well down, summer usage looks like it will be lower than usual in the US and the markets have long since adjusted to the loss of Libyan crude.

Or is this more to make up for the flow reductions on the Keystone pipeline which I guess have been extended through sometime in July? Which doesn't really add up as at most the flow restrictions will reduce the supply by 5 million barrels over the June/July period.

I saw a blurb on the news the other day and there are a few refineries offline presently. The fire on the left coast should only affect prices out there. :saywhat:

It is still around $3.09 for regular around the Salt Lake Valley. In the $2.90s at places like Costco & Sam's Club.

Check it tomorrow. :irked:

$3.77 in IL tonight. One car was near me, then the guy got in his car and moved over to another pump. As I finished filling, I heard the guy talking to another, the pump they were at was still $3.40.

Almost seems like a self-fufilling profitcy doesn't it. Media starts talking about how gas will to to $5 and then it begins a steady march up despite demand being down. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. Nothing like giving futures traders the green light to run it up.

US production is way up and demand is way down. But speculation is through the roof and that is driving the price up. So a mechanism that exists to give people who actually trade oil the chance to contractually hedge their physical positions has instead turned into a giant casino that literally threatens the national security of the United States, yet no one dares touch it because the financial industry owns the government. What's the old saying about relaxing and enjoying it?

Oil is still over $100 a barrel and there's a lot of uncertainty in the market. Oil is a global commodity, not a national one and global demand continues to grow.

Demand is up a little and uncertainty has been inflated by the propaganda machine. The result is that nobody in the oil futures market dares to be short. They all hit the bid and get long which drives the future prices up. Existing stock is marked up to replacement cost.
