Hey Stu, I didn't realize it was Summer yet.
Its not summer.
But they are purchasing fuel for the summer right now, and they are starting to change the refining process to the summer blends now as well.
I'd be interested in an explanation for this chart. Gas prices are going lower, lower, lower, lower until.........election day 2006. I'm not saying anything, but....
http://66.70.86.46/test.gaschart?Country=Canada&Crude=f&Period=6&Areas=SanJose,,&Unit=US%20$/G
RichK, I am confused as to why you would use a chart for San Jose only. Why not look at the entire United States (and Canada for that matter). Oh, cuz that doesn't prove your point, since prices were cheaper in January than on election day.

Actually, the inflection point is still there.
technically, the point of inflection is not the preferred nomenclature, as that occurs before and after that particular critical point. "Saddle point" is that which you are seeking.

Even better, I should've just said "local minimum".

Article in today's paper about what is going on:
But much of the recent surge in gasoline prices can be blamed on outages at the nation's oil refineries.
Some 800,000 barrels a day of refining capacity, or about 5 percent of the nation's total capacity, are currently off line, said Joanne Shore, a senior analyst with the U.S. Energy Information Administration. That compares with about 100,000 barrels a day that might typically be down this time of year.
BP accounts for about half of that lost refining capacity.
Both BP's Texas City refinery and its Whiting, Ind., facility — two of the nation's five biggest refineries — are running at only half capacity, with some 400,000 barrels a day shut down, Sankey said.
Texas City was rocked by an explosion in March 2005 that killed 15 and injured scores of others, while Whiting is still recovering from a March 22 fire that hobbled operations.
BP spokesman Scott Dean said the company is working around the clock "to bring the refineries back to their capabilities as quickly and safely as possible."
But he noted that while much of the focus has been on BP, U.S. refineries overall have experienced more than 30 unplanned outages since the beginning of the year.
Currently, refinery profit margins are at record levels, analysts said. But as recently as 2002, refiners were experiencing losses. The years of losing money caused companies to neglect refining investment, Sankey said.

The Silver Eagle Refinery here in Salt lake had an explosion and fire in their diesel fuel processing unit on May 6th. Their diesel production is now zero and they will be offline for 3-4 months. It is a very small refinery (10,200 barrels a day) their diesel output was around 100,000 gallons of diesel a day which is ~3% of the state's production. Not a huge deal but it is ten less delivery trucks a day around town.

$3.23 at the gas station across the street from my bus stop and $3.20 at other gas stations along the bus route. I am glad I take the bus to work because it is so cheap (25 bucks a month). Unfortunately, planning a wedding 5 hours away makes my demand inelastic because I still have to go down there frequently, but once the fiancee moves up here, I will be using a gallon or two a week.
P.S. Everyone should pray there aren't any hurricanes that make a direct hit on the Gulf production areas this summer, or we are looking at inflation adjusted records.

I have never complained about what the local gas station charges, because I have known for a while that they don't make squat selling gas. Strangely enough, the Shell station by State Fair Park is one of the last places I filled up with gas before I moved out of Milwaukee.
In terms of gas prices in Saint Paul, we have gone down to $3.30 per gallon for the cheap stuff. I am anxious to see what happens later today as the weekend gets even closer.

I feel bad for that particular station owner. Now, I have a question - did he only change the price each time his tanks were filled up, or did he make multiple price changes on each underground tank fill?
Gas here in Indy seems to be around 3.58/gal or so for 87 octane. I assume it is so high compared to the national average because of the the race.

I am going to assume he made multiple price changes on each fill. However, Wisconsin is different than other states in that you are only allowed to change your prices once a day, so if you bought a tanker at the retail equivalent of $2.00 at 7:00am and then at 9:00am unexpected good news in the market drops the price to $1.80, you essentially lose a day of business.
This relates to the topic of gas prices, so I thought I would fill everyone in. The high prices right now are not being caused by oil prices, because West Texas Crude is much lower than it was this time last year. The problem is that the nation's refinery capacity, especially in the Midwest, is well below optimum because of various shutdowns. As we speak, there are over 27 million barrels of crude oil in Oklahoma just sitting around waiting to be refined, but there is no room for it. So, if a call comes later in the summer to tap into the crude oil emergency reserves, remember this and know that it will have no real effect on prices at the pump.

What do they make per gallon of gas? I ask because there is a new grocery store being built near my home. The trend lately for the big grocers is to build a smaller "convience" store out in the parking lot and they, the stores have gone to selling gas.
Why go to the expense of installing all the needed equipment to sell gas if there is little profit?

They hope you will also buy groceries. I shop occasionally at Randalls so I can get the 10 cents a gallon discount when I need to fill up the SUV.

Several years ago, an owner of a gas station told me that he only made between 1 and 3 cents a gallon for gas. The real profit is in selling all the soda and snacks with the gas.

It's a loyalty card thing and a loss leader. Buy groceries, get a discount on the ga$. Kroger and Giant Eagle are currently going to war here in central oHIo. Giant Eagle just started offering a $.20/gallon discount for every $50 purchased. Kroger gives a discount on 4 fillups/mo. $.20/gallon for purchases over $300, IIRC.

That sums up the whole industry now (outside the stations owned by refineries). It use to be that service stations supplemented their business by doing car repair, but that is increasingly becoming a thing of the past. I remember reading somewhere a couple times that the margin on retail gasoline is generally less than 10 cents and sometimes as low as a penny. So, you can see why owners are so insane about drive-offs when you think how long it would take them to make-up $40 worth of gas at a two cent margin.
Gas is now more expensive than beer. This weekend, especially, drink, don't drive.

Going over my records, I have driven my truck only 5,800 miles since 1/1/07, which in the same period last year, I drove almost 10,000. (and this year, I have made about 6 RT's to Portland, which is about 500 miles RT).
I have cut back big time where and when I drive, and make sure to get everything done in one trip. (Store, bank, cleaners, etc)
We are around $3.49 - $3.57 around town here for regular (depending on where you go)
the margins on gas sales are very slim, but a poster on HF who runs a few stations said they're pulling in a healthier margin with the $3+ prices.

There was a story on the news here about some of the small town gas stations with older analog pumps. Seems that they can not be set to anything higher than $3.999/gallon. Gas keeps going up and these guys will be forced to buy new pumps which cost a fortune and often require new tanks to go along with them.
As for the new electronic pumps, they can be set as high as $999.99 a gallon:shakehead

Report yesterday said Jersey has the lowest cost for gas in the nation. Some of that is due to the refineries here but state gas tax is about $.12/gal less than other states. That accounts for almost all the difference.
Of course we just passed a bond issue last year to fund road and bridge maintenance because we don't collect enough in gas tax. The cost of interest on that debt amounts to about $.12/gal for the average driver. Go figure. Why pay when you can make your kids pay?

if there is one thing I can add, you learn to adapt. Around the olympics in 2000 we paid 58-68c/L. We now pay almost double that. You just have to learn to adapt. They have us by the short and curlies and no alternative fuel source is going to be any cheaper. No point stressing because it isn't going to go down-ever.

You're right... it was only a couple of years ago that the gas stations here were caught off guard and had to add an extra digit to their signs! $1/L gas was unthinkable, now it's the norm.
Canada is a net oil exporter, so when I see a high price at the pumps I remember that we're getting it back and more in royalties from our customers.
Your business is appreciated. :D
P.S. - buy more SUVs. ;)
