An interesting read on how the levees were breached, and some background on how the system was created and modified over the years:

From what I've been reading, this Lt. Gen. Honroe is one. badass. MF.

http://www.cnn.com/2005/US/09/02/honore.profile/index.html

Quoties from other articles:

Army Lt. Gen. Russel Honore, in charge of the military operation, estimated that about 7,000 people were stranded on the Interstate 10 overpass Thursday. "We're going in and picking up those that are sick and moving them to the hospital," he said, referring to the makeshift facility at New Orleans Louis Armstrong International Airport.

Honore said that 1,000 National Guard troops were involved in the evacuation of people there and in the city's hospitals.

CNN's Barbara Starr reported that as she was walking in the street with Honore, a young woman with twin babies in her arms was walking in the street.

"She was trying to walk in this terrible heat, and she apparently was so exhausted the babies were half falling out of her arms," Starr said.

Gen. Honore, she said, "went up to this woman, and he said, 'We're going to get you help.' And he took both of those babies, handed them off to his soldiers, said, 'Take these babies,' and we got on a Coast Guard ship."

The mother and the babies are now getting medical care, Starr said.

At a New Orleans street corner, Lt. Gen. Russel Honore directed the deployment of National Guard troops -- expected to number 1,000.

Honore said getting food and water to the people at the convention center was difficult. "If you ever have 20,000 people come to supper, you know what I'm talking about," the three-star general said. "If it was easy, it would have been done already."

CNN's Barbara Starr, who is traveling with the general, said Honore is "very determined to keep this looking like a humanitarian relief operation."

"A few moments ago, he stopped a truck full of National Guard troops ... and said, 'Point your weapons down, this is not Iraq,' " Starr reported.

arkansas's bringing in 20K on top of the 50K estimated to alerady be there, governor plans on setting up offices in all 75 counties to distribute funds evenly

hospitals in the HTown med center are on alert b/c of drug users breaking in looking for stuff... the med center's only 3 stops down from the 'dome on the light rail.

dude already jacked a car from the dome, drove it to the 3rd ward, and carjacked someone else...

The $100 Billion Storm:

http://www.nytimes.com/2005/09/03/business/03insure.html?ei=5090&en=24acf0eb9f78dda3&ex=1283400000&partner=rssuserland&emc=rss&pagewanted=print

Saying the damage already appeared far greater than expected, Risk Management Solutions in Newark, Calif., said that insured losses would range from $20 billion to $35 billion, much higher than the firm's initial estimate of $10 billion to $25 billion.

The new figures suggest that Hurricane Katrina will cost the insurance industry more than any other natural disaster on record, unseating Hurricane Andrew in 1992, which cost $21 billion in 2004 dollars, according to the Insurance Information Institute, an industry group. Katrina's price tag may also overshadow the $23 billion in insured losses caused by four large hurricanes last year in South Florida.

But there is far more that commercial insurers will not absorb.

Uninsured losses often include damage to roads, highways, utilities and public buildings, as well as the cost of government relief efforts. There is also the huge cost of not doing business, which the firm estimated at $100 million a day.

Not only will the total losses reach $100 billion, but they may keep climbing if efforts to repair the levees in New Orleans stall, said Kyle Beatty, a Risk Management Solutions meteorologist.

Jeebus! I thought the initial estimates were way low ball, but $100B!?!?

"these people"? These people are American citizens without homes, food, water or any ability to take care of themselves at the moment. At this point, I don't care why they're there, whether they stupidly chose to stay or simply could not leave. The fact is that "these people" are US.

There is a checkpoint on U.S. 10 outside the Superdome. Any NO resident trying to leave the city on foot to get to the next town, where there IS power, and there is water and food, is turned back and not allowed to leave the city. I am disgusted by this. People are starving, they're dehydrated, sick and some are dying. It makes me ill that we cannot take care of our own.

Football fans around the Southeast are giving up their prepaid rooms and even tickets to storm victims -- opting to stay home and watch the game on TV.
Many fans not only gave up rooms but offered to pay for the evacuees to use them, said Robert Ratliff, executive director of the local convention and visitors bureau.

I've read elsewhere that the breech that caused the most problems was in a section that had been recently re-done. Any money cut over the last few years would not have made any difference as it would have been spent elsewhere. A master plan was designed back in 98, I think that had a 14 billion dollar price tag. Congress never agreed to fund it.

Canada Ups its contribution for OPERATION UNISON.

4 Ships, 3 Navy, 1 Coast Guard. 2 Air Force Sea King helos join that task force.

Divers from Fleet Diving Unit Pacific and 4th Engineering Support Regiment are heading down to help with levee work and flooding.

2 Air Force Griffon helos have been sent to assist the USCG in Search and Rescue missions in the Boston area of responsibility - replacing USCG crews sent to Katrina.

A Canadian Forces AirBus has started ferrying Red Cross workers to the affected area.

Air Canada has sent 1 plane full of supplies and has remained to help shuttle displaced people to Texas and other states.

The US has asked Canada for medical supplies, including beds, blankets, gloves, gowns, batteries, needles, surgical dressings, bandages, tongue depressors, bath towels, and cloths. Canada is contemplating sending a mobile hospital to the area.

As of a couple days ago, canadians have contributed over 1 million to Red Cross.

Puts me in mind of the song Acadian Driftwood from The Band...

Everlasting summer filled with ill-content
This government had us walkin' in chains
This isn't my turf
This ain't my season
Can't think of one good reason to remain
I've worked in the sugar fields up from New Orleans
It was ever green up until the floods
You could call it an omen
Points ya where you're goin'
Set my compass north
I got winter in my blood

More thanks to Canada and its two airlines. From today's ARTA agent E-News:

"Air Canada has announced it is partnering with the Canadian Red Cross to help raise funds to assist people affected by the hurricane. Along with Jazz the two airlines will distribute and collect Red Cross donation envelopes on all flights across its North American network in Canada and the US. Planes are taking out people and bringing back supplies."

In other airline news, there are now 14 major airlines ferrying in supplies and taking out people. Crews are donating their time. The airlines are asking to be reiumbursed for the cost of the jet fuel. Two major runways are now operational although they are still stuggling to get all taxi and runway lights operational.

I'm sure you've all heard that Carnival Cruise Lines has given three of its ships for housing. This necessitates changes in other ships itineraries as well so it's a big gesture on Carnival's part.

Cart7, or anyone, I must have something in my Outlook Express that is resizing the images. As soon as the download is complete, it shrinks it to fit the screen. Can you tell me how to avoid that so I can actually see the houses? I think I've zeroed in near my friend's house by checking the roads and the mapquest location but I can't make out what I'm seeing once it gets so small.
