Sign of the times? Porsche announces a sedan.

I wish, instead of designing and producing s***** SUVs, that some of these companies would start designing small wagons...like my 93 Ford Escort. Like Toyota and Honda used to have. I don't want a truck, I don't want a small car I can't put anything in, I don't want an SUV, I want exactly what I have. I have to haul tons of band gear around, but I want manuverability and be able to have fun. Sheesh the stuff I can do with this car, even when it's fully loaded would make your head spin. I'd be dead in an SUV, and it doesn't cost me 60 bucks in gas to drive up to Solvang and back for a gig (312 miles).

All the hand-wringing by Porsche purists makes me laugh. I've always said, if you HAVE to have an SUV, why not make it a Porsche? So, if you HAVE to have a 4 door sedan, why not make it a Porsche?

What these people fail to realize is that in today's market place, in order to retain independence, Porsche MUST make these cars, and they must sell as many as possible. They cannot survive on 911's, Boxsters, The various GT-series cars, and especially cars like the Carerra GT. I'd wager that the Carerra GT would not have been viable without the profits from the Cayenne.

All of the other "sports car" manufacturers have "sugar daddy" parent companies who I'm guessing are willing to ignore un-profitability in order to have the cache of saying "we make these cars". I guarantee all of the big car companies are just waiting for the ability to snap up a prize like Porsche.

And you're right, they need to keep racing. This is another step toward ensuring that Porsche will always BE racing.

Nope, but the specific one in the photo is called the "Rogue Wagon" - Rogue Engineering built it, and it has all E46 M3 drivetrain, suspension, brakes, interior, etc. So while the normal E46 wagon won't give that Audi a run, the red car pictured above certainly will!

I remember the cover of Road and Track or one of those magazines around '90 or '91 had a Ferrari Sedan on the cover. The article said that Ferrari lovers wanted something to carry the whole family in. The sedan offered Ferrari luxury and performance with the roominess of a sedan. I did not get this magazine, it was in a waiting room at a doctors office or something. Does anybody remember this car? Did Ferrari ever actually release it?

I remember the car on the cover was Dark blue. It probably looked a little like a 7Series BMW does in size and lines.

I can't say I'm any kind of Porsche purist. The only Porsche I ever owned was a 944 (I think one fellow where I worked then called me a Satan worshipper for that), and that was many a moon ago.

So yeah, I think they're doing what they have to do. We all do. I drive a 4 door station wagon these days. And when people ask me what that odd whistling noise is, I just say it must have a vacuum leak or something. :gomer:

there's a cheap imitation of your car parked across the street. doesnt have as near as many horses, and the paint job is navy blue.

The extra weight at the back gives the car better handling ?

as compared to the sedan? yes... its a better balanced car. still a pig... but a better balanced pig. the V8 weighs just as much as the 2.7 turbo V6 that was used in the previous generation S4.

BTW, I agree regarding the whining from the "purists." It's like the biggest Porsche fans want the company to fail or something. From the pictures I've been seeing the Panamera looks like it'll be a really nice car. Too bad we'll have to wait so long to see it.

The Subie has sure made a believer out of me. A lil of this and a touch of that in mods and you're just shy of 300 hp @ the crank for a LOT less than $30K... the AWD system and great quality is just icing.
