EDIT: Apprently there are now reports of survivors exiting the plane and being evaced. Looked bad from what I saw on the tube.

I had my first ever flight (with Stu) last Tuesday, definitely glad this didn't happen before I went.

Why would there be an explosion?

CityTV is reporting that its believed everyone made it off the plane... sources from airport personnel and survivors

possibly the plane hit by lightning, reports the lights went out, and possibly a hard landing, blowing out the tyres.

Airport authority press conference reports 14 people with minor injuries, and they believe that there are no fatalities.

297 passengers and 12 crew.

At 16:03 est., and Air France Airbus A340 overran Runway 23L by some 100 metres.

A press conference is scheduled to be held by the Greater Toronto Airports Authority (GTAA) at 18:00 hrs. at the GTAA"s Administration building located at 3111 Convair Drive (Renforth & 401).

Toronto Pearson International Airport remains operational. Prior to the overrun, the airport was under a ground stop program due to extreme weather conditions which resulted in the postponement of departing aircraft.

At this time, flights are still arriving.

The Transportation Safety Board has been alerted and is investigating.

The GTAA advises passengers to check with their airlines prior to coming to the airport.

The Airport Authority also advises travellers to check www.gtaa.com frequently for updates.

Looks like everyone made it out safely. Great news. Seems like the last few years have been very good for air safety. Let's hope it's a trend that continues.
