that the president's dead... gotta suck, suck, suck, suck Jackie suck.

Hanging out in El Paso today and humming the Misfits and wondering if El Paso is the "Jacksonville" of Texas, or if that is reserved for some other Texas Stinkburg?

Fixin' to walk over the Sante Fe bridge into Mexico to have a brew at the "Kentucky Club." I was told that is a decent, old place. However, if I get forked in my first ever visit to Mexico (while setting up an arms smuggling, auto theft ring), I will my CD collection to Mr. Ankfoo. :D

w00t!

yea, it's a hole, get up on one of them mountains and look across the river at all those shantytowns, 'tis a putrid depressing sight.

could be worse, you could be in odessa or amarillo ;)

and if I were you, I'd go over there with some company with the way things are these days along that portion of the border, seriously...

Man, I wish I knew that Guadalupe Peak was outside of El Paso. It's the highest peak in Texas. After I climb all the 14,000'ers in Colorado (30 of 54 done thus far), the 50 state summits might make a good lil' quest.

Regarding El Paso, I was more worried walking back to my hotel from the border than I was in Mexico. Desolate city streets with block after block of barricaded shops and stores; roll-up doors securely padlocked shut. :(

Also, you call that concrete ditch of industrial discharge a river? :saywhat:

This was a solo trip, but, despite 3 beers on this side and two gin and tonics on that side, I was pretty cognizant of my surroundings. I didn't get over there until dark though... I think it's a better day trip.

Seriously padding my post count here. :)

I left the sandles in the hotel room - wore the steel toe boots and tried to affect the martial look. Stretched my 6'2" frame and broadened my shoulders (the better to stick a knife between ;) ).

At least I didn't wear a Tennessee Volunteer hat.

They pretty much roll up the sidewalks after hours in the downtown area (from your description). The only "night life" is in the East part of town, or even better, across the concrete ditch of industrial waste.
And Guadalupe Peak is almost 100 miles away, of course in Texas terms that could be called "outside" El Paso.

Say howdy to my Mom and Dad if you see them.

The live out on the west side near Sunland Park Mall. Can't miss them. Old folks driving a Crown Vic. :D

Take the tram up to the top of Franklin Mtn. Cool view of the city at night.

go down to Brownsville, it can get worse :D However, going up river and canoeing for a few days down the Santa Elena or Colorado or lower Canyons over in Big Bend is pretty nice.

just have to watch out for the aboriginals looking to raid your goods, not losing all your food for the next 5 days by capsizing, oh and the snakes :D

You too? My mom finally moved out here to California, but all my aunts and uncles still live there.

Wow... that looks like a challenging one. ;)

Maybe that isn't such a good quest. Hiking mounds around the midwest would be pretty lame and Denali would be pretty intense.

I think I saw your folks today out near the "Famous Dave's" on Mesa Street. :D

I googled Franklin Mtn. and learned about the state park on the west (opposite) side of the tram. I hiked up to Mundy's Gap to the north saddle of North Franklin Mountain today when I was done with work stuff (generating taxes).

Pretty cool scenery and no views of the sprawl for much of the way up as it switch-backed up through the gullies. Best Texas experience ever. Much better than my trip across the "river" to Juarez in August. Thanks for the tip ! ! ! :)

Yes, I recommend Mt. Washington in Vermont...in the winter....known for its extreme winds of 100mph+. :gomer: :p :D

Don't bother with Ohiya....tallest points being @ King's Island or Cedar Point.

The highest point in Wisconsin is called Timm's Hill, if that gives you an idea of the size. :D

The highest point in the Illinois county where I grew up was a landfill. :gomer:

In the interests of... well, myself really... I suggest you take an unescorted trip to Juarez next time and sample the local tequilas until you can take no more :D
