Irrelevant Racing League
By JIM SHORT
The Press-Enterprise
15-SEP-05
On Tuesday, while listening as Indy Racing League officials unveiled the 2006 schedule, I kept waiting for them to announce a name change.
It didn't happen, but it really didn't matter. It's clear now that IRL stands for Irrelevant Racing League, and no longer should be regarded as a major racing series, even if it does include the Indianapolis 500. That became obvious as IRL president Brian Barnhart and vice-president of business affairs Ken Ungar tried to spin straw into gold and convince those on the conference call that what they were hearing in the background wasn't a funeral dirge......
After 10 years of searching for an identity, it's now clear what the IRL is: small time.
Clearly, Mr. Short gets it.

God, now I've got the image of TG in the Leo DiCaprio role in that movie. Thanks a lot. ;)

Well, maybe NOW "shorty" gets it...but for the last 10 years that guy has been one step short of "Cavein" in the shill department.
I guess anyone can look like a hero when the truth finally "clubs you over the head"... :shakehead

It's an all-earl media blitz! (In reverse).

Reducing your product by 18 percent isn't a sign of progress. Dropping all but one race from the Mountain and Pacific time zones doesn't do much to attract business. Letting markets as large as Los Angeles and Phoenix slip away (and then surreptitiously placing the blame on the tracks) doesn't do much for sponsors or future relations with promoters.
All of which led to the primary theme of the behind-the-scenes reaction to the announcement: For the first time, the diehard IRL backers are beginning to doubt the direction, the leadership and the future of the IRL. Yep, the hardcores are grumbling. Like finding a dead canary in the mine, it's not a good sign.

Wrong. When the semi-casual fans, like many, many of my friends who used to come to my house for an I500 party (pre-split) every year started grumbling, THAT was the canary in the coal mine.
The hardcores grumbling is more like a mine cave-in.
