Interesting website about WWI and WWII era ships made of concrete. A few of them are still afloat today with one actually used as a hotel.

How about a concrete canoe? I only know about these because we get all kinds of engineering magazines at work.

I heard on the radio yesterday that New Orleans were looking at houses in the Netherlands whose foundations are concrete 'hulls' and float the house during floods.

I heard on the radio yesterday that New Orleans were looking at houses in the Netherlands whose foundations are concrete 'hulls' and float the house during floods. Sounds entirely too logical to ever catch on here. Why do the job only once when you can rebuild that stick house and fasten it to the ground (i.e. occasional lake bottom) every decade or two. :gomer:

There was a minor concrete boat building fad in the late 60's - early 70's after Stewart Brand inserted a blurb on it in the original Whole Earth Catalogue. Inexpensive, easy for the DIY crowd and good longevity. Best to build next to the water though because they are really heavy.

When I was in college (before I started and after I graduated as well), the Civil Engineering students built concrete canoes to race.

Do a Google on "ferro cement yachts"--you'll find lots of those!

My friends built a 50' concrete sailboat in the 1980s and have been sailing around the South Pacific for years. It won't win any races though.
