Gender Equality in Sports

Okay, so over the last few years a lot of hay has been made about women and men being equal, particularly when it comes to sports. Annika Sorenstam played in a PGA event; Michelle Wie has done the same. We've had girls playing high school and/or college football, and of course, many people have popped off over the Danimal.

It's not that I don't believe in gender equality, but I'm sick of hearing about it all. Apparently I'm not alone.

Former British Open goat Jean Van de Velde, tired of having women play on the PGA Tour to prove some sort of point, has decided to make a point of his own. Van de Velde will attempt to qualify for the 2006 Women's British Open. (http://sports.espn.go.com/golf/news/story?id=2205481)

"My whole point is where do we draw the line? If we accept that women can enter our tournaments, then it applies that men can play with women."

It's childish. It's ridiculous. It's borderline crazy.

One wonders how feminists around the world will respond, but it almost certainly will not be a popular move. I'm sure Martha Burke will at some point feel the need to say something incredibly stupid about the situation.

In the meantime, I suspect a lot of people will be rooting for this guy to make it. I'll definitely be one of them.

Women's tennis is the only women's sport I enjoy watching. The level of play isn't crappy in comparison to the men. Soccer's too sloppy and slow, ice hockey? yea right... basketball? no thank you...
