Okay, so let's say this guy just gets cuffed and hauled away because his wife is behind him and says he's koo-koo.

Then, if I were a wannabe plane bomber, I'd say to myself, "Lizzerd, find another suicidal maniac, must be female, and have her pretend she's my wife. Then I could maybe run fast enough to get to my killing zone and blow myself up! Yeah, that's the ticket!"

Bingo! Just what I was thinking.

Well yes, if the guy has a wife running after him saying he is bi-polar and off his medication, that would make it less likely the guy is a terrorist. When was the last terrorist bombing that you heard of with the terrorist running OFF the plane with his wife chasing him?

Terrorist organizations are very innovative. On September 10th, 2001, how likely did we think a terrorist would be to hijack a plane and fly it into a skyscraper?

Another scenario. You are on a plane and putting your bag overhead. Later you need to get something out. Some nut case points at you, screaming "he's got a bomb!". Unawares you continue to dig in your bag as you are pierced through the head with a bullet.

I love short stories. :)

Ahem....

Nutcase points you out. Air Marshalls approach with guns drawn and tell you to stop reaching inside the bag, keep your hands visible, and get on the ground. You comply, they cuff you, check your bag, find nothing of alarm, uncuff you, apologize for the inconveinence, and escort you back to your seat.

On the other hand....Air Marshalls approach you with guns drawn, tell you to stop reaching inside the bag, keep your hands visible, and get on the ground. You pretend to ignore and do not comply. (If there is one thing I did not hear anyone say after this incident, it is that they could not hear the yelling before the gunfire started.) Then they put a bullet in you and chack your bag. Congratulations! You just committ suicide by Air Marshall, and I have zero sympathy for you. :shakehead

Afterall, there are a few of other people who happen to be rifling through bags in the overhead. And you know you don't have a bomb, so why would you think they are talking to you? So you innocently turn around to see what going on, and your brains get splatted all over the place.

Oh, it's a pretty safe bet you'd know...no one is trying to say that this guy didn't know the Air Marshalls were talking to him. He was not complying with their instructions.

Well, your first clue might be the 2 or 3 9mm's that are pointed at your chest, and the guy screaming at you from just over 5 feet away...even if you aren't the subject they are yelling at, a rational person would not continue rifling through the bag. At the very least, instinct would make you stop what you are doing and look at the guy screaming at you.

Some of the posts I am seeing here seem to lend themselves to a theory that I have had for some time...that the average american does not seem to comprehend that it is possible for him to make a decision which may result in his or her life comming to an end. Grab a plastic gun and try to run into any government building in a major city. If you refuse to put it down and follow orders from the officers staged at the enterances, I guarantee that the story will not have a happy ending. I am sorry if this doesn't fit into your view of the world, but it is a hard reality.

Shoe bombers have gotten through (one on the same day as the shooting, BTWwhat?

For Ank.

Damn TPS reports, I ain't gonna do them, nosiree. I think that I'll go blow up aircraft, yep, that'll teach them. No, I can't go through with it, I gotta get off this plane NOW! Nownownow! What, who's these guys with the guns, what are they shouting? They want the TPS reports done too, well, this it it, I'll really show them now!

Ugh.

I'll wait for all the facts for final judgement, and I'm sure there will be more, but as I read about it, guy was on the jetway, claiming to have a boomer, walking back TOWARDS the plane, refusing orders, two (right?) air marshalls take him out. Who heard he had a boomer? Two cops (am I right on this?) and the Captain.

Good shoot, so far.

what?

You heard me right...same day as this guy was shot, the air transportation system was under alert looking for a guy who's shoes tested positive five times for explosives, yet somehow managed to get through security. Turns out he probably wasn't a threat, but let's put an end to talk of how security catches everything at the airport and therefore this guy couldn't possibly have had a bomb, ok?
