LHD? Is there a new All England Cup ELMS nobody has mentioned yet? :p

I don't like how "pointy" it looks compared to the R8, like the roll hoops. I think the prsche and the audi would look better without the two seater appearence thing

Bastard offspring of the R8 and the Lister LMP.

I guess we now know at least 1 of the drivers.

They only took down the indexes...The direct links are still working.

Anyway, what the car looks like is only half the fun. Hopefully we'll find out tomorrow how many are running and who's driving them.

Does anyone have an idea what a high-performance Diesel will sound like?

You expected a radical, clean-sheet redesign after the dissapointment that was the R8? ;)

Looks like they raised the ride height.
edit:Its a "camerferded edge"

Mandated by the rules. Somewhere on Mulsanne Mike's there's an explanation of the new aero regs and the reasoning behind them. In this instance I believe it's to reduce the lift generated by the car in the event of it turning sideways (more of an inverted airfoil or at least a neutral-lift shape to the car when it's sideways).

Ah, there it is: http://www.mulsannescorner.com/aco2004.html

yes chop, i was hoping for somthing different, it is pretty much and R8 that meets the new rules, with some aero updates and a new engine.

Quiet (as racing engines go).

Audi Press Release (http://www.speedarena.com/news/publish/sportscar/article_6324.shtml)

They're still being vague on exact schedule, teams, drivers, R8 status, etc. All they've said: Sebring Debut, LeMans w/ Joest, and Tom Kristensen as 1 of 6 drivers (though I'm guessing Biela's testing role easily makes him one as well). They have 3 cars built, though, so it's not impossible that Champion could get one.

has Joest decided if they are racing DTM again next year? I know the entry deadline was extended for them. I was kinda hoping they'd be back in ALMS. Audi has committed to ALMS with this car(s) beyond Sebring, correct? you'd have to think it would be Joest and then Champion...

either way... good day for road racing and sportscar fans

Audi's committed to nothing besides Sebring and Le Mans at this point. Joest will definitely run the cars at Le Mans, so I would assume that's the case for Sebring as well. Rumors suggest one Joest car at Sebring may be in Champion colors, but it looks like that may be as close to an R10 as Dave Maraj gets, at least until after Le Mans.

One would assume. Apparently, one of Audi's press releases specifically stated that the R8 was no longer eligible for Le Mans, but was for the ALMS. That suggests to me that Champion is running an R8 for at least part of the ALMS season. But it's all speculation at this point.

Vague ALMS press release (http://americanlemans.com/News/Article.aspx?NewsID=1686):

"Audi has been an integral part of the American Le Mans Series for six years and is our defending champion. We are ecstatic that our relationship will continue, stronger than ever," said Scott Atherton, president and CEO of the American Le Mans Series. "Audi has played a leading role in the success of the American Le Mans Series, and we believe the series has contributed significantly to the success of Audi – certainly in North America. The fact that we are beginning a new chapter together is good news for all involved."

Audi's specific plans for the 2006 American Le Mans Series will be announced in the near future.

silly question, but i haven't stumbled across it in the time i've spent following the series (admittedly, only a few years):

why are cars of this style designed with a visual that would reflect an apparent capacity to accomodate both a driver and a passenger, but with some sort of modification to accomodate only the driver?

Not having been a big viewer of ALMS myself, I can't say for sure, but I would imagine that it has something to do with the circuits they run. Maybe the driver is always on the left side of the car, but there may be circuits where they set the driver up on the right.

Or maybe not. :gomer:

video at the bottom here of it driving up, it kinda has a wistiling sound as they rev it up.

I don't like being able to see under it, it looks less sporty.

It used to be you only needed one seat, like the R8 was with a single hoop. But new rules wanted to emphasize that these are 2 seaters so they add another roll hoop like on this car and the Porsche RS spider. About what side the driver is on is up to the maker, Audi wants it on the left.

Good article on SPEEDTV.com (http://www.speedtv.com/commentary/21219/)

“The sound of the engine is something new,” he says. “We’ll have to adapt our driving style to the new engine. Once you get into third gear, you don’t hear the engine anymore . . . it’s drowned out by the noise of the wind. It’s a strange sensation. Usually when you’re accelerating you hear the engine noise – and to some degree judge your gear shifts by the engine noise (along with the tachometer and steering wheel-mounted shift lights). Now you hear only the wind.”
