DOD officials say autonomous killing machines deserve a look (http://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2016/03/dod-officials-say-autonomous-killing-machines-deserve-a-look/)
But military officials are looking hard at the possibility of developing robotic systems that are capable of acting on their own if remote control is cut off and decisions must be made on when to deploy a weapon—whether it's an armed drone dropping a bomb or launching a missile or a ground robot firing weapons.
"Destroy all carbon-based life forms" would be a very bad algorithm for autonomous killbots.

Is a nuke on a "space plane" that is only in space temporarily different from a satellite that is in space permanently, and does that count as weaponizing space?
Might explain Russia and China's recent missile development of faster rockets. If US weapons are already in orbit, any adversary would have to reduce their response time to maintain a effective deterrent.

Below is Honeywell's brochure for their oxygen generators. The big advantages of switching from liquid oxygen were lower costs and longer missions. Pilot safety was supposed to remain the same. Whoops!

Sounds like the biggest problem is the lack of a warning that the system is not effectively generating oxygen. Can we bolt a $50 oxygen sensor out of someone's Focus in there?
It seems like this may also relate to some of the previously mentioned problems with budget, maintenance, and operational tempo.

Yesterday we visited the Champaign Aviation Museum (http://www.champaignaviationmuseum.org/), a small museum located at the Urbana, Ohio airport. They have a small collection of restored WWII aircraft including flying B-25 and A-26s. They're in the process of building a flying condition B-17G. Originally it was going to be a restoration, but none of the handful of donor planes had enough salvageable parts to call it a restoration. They're effectively building a new B-17G.

New GAO report takes the Air Force to task for proposing to eliminate the A-10 without really having a plan to replace it. Besides the combat air support role the Air Force has specifically failed to find a replacement for the A-10 in the combat search and rescue or forward air controller role.

I'm not sure what the US could even do.
Short of opening fire on the Russians there really isn't anything we can do and Assad/Putin know it.
I don't see anything coming from this beyond huge numbers of casualties. They are cut off and nothing short of a full scale invasion or opening fire on the Russians is going to change that and neither is going to happen. At some point they need to seriously consider surrendering. We already know Assad/Putin do not give a damn about civilian casualties. The longer they hold out the more people get killed. There are a couple hundred thousand people trapped in Aleppo, they will just keep killing them until they surrender.
Russians and a 2-bit tyrant acting inhumanely? Shocking.
The US has clearly signaled it is leaving the Middle East. I don't know if it's a choice or a necessity, but the result will be blood and violence until the strong are able to conquer the weak. There will be many massacres like Aleppo.
I don't disagree with any of that. The challenge is going to be whether we can execute this kind of "butt out" foreign policy and avoid repeating the history of eventually getting dragged into an even bigger mess somewhere down the line. The first test will come when the media no longer has this clown-show of an election to keep it busy and the dead children start showing up on front pages regularly.

Exactly. Do we really want a shooting war with Putin? As horrible as the situation is in Syria, is blowing up the world a rational alternative? We blew any opportunity to influence events there in any meaningful way a long time ago. A "why can't we use nuclear weapons" policy is terrifying. That seems impossible. Eventually a non-state terrorist is going to attack us. Our policy will not matter. The question then becomes do you invade a whole country (like Afghanistan) that housed them? It seems pretty clear that removing dictators is not creating democracy or peace in the Middle East. The oppressed majority want revenge on their suppressors when the dictator is overthrown. Then the newly oppressed minority fight back guerrilla style.

Address on the Situation in Southeast Asia
My fellow Americans, we live in an age of anarchy, both abroad and at home. We see mindless attacks on all the great institutions which have been created by free civilizations in the last 500 years. Even here in the United States, great universities are being systematically destroyed. Small nations all over the world find themselves under attack from within and from without.
If, when the chips are down, the world's most powerful nation, the United States of America, acts like a pitiful, helpless giant, the forces of totalitarianism and anarchy will threaten free nations and free institutions throughout the world.
It is not our power but our will and character that is being tested tonight. The question all Americans must ask and answer tonight is this: Does the richest and strongest nation in the history of the world have the character to meet a direct challenge by a group which rejects every effort to win a just peace, ignores our warning, tramples on solemn agreements, violates the neutrality of an unarmed people, and uses our prisoners as hostages?
If we fail to meet this challenge, all other nations will be on notice that despite its overwhelming power the United States, when a real crisis comes, will be found wanting.

Self-made millionaire Gregory Sancoff has spent a decade and $19 million building a highly unusual stealth boat. Called Ghost, it’s designed to be faster, more stable, and more fuel-efficient than anything currently in the U.S. Navy’s fleet, he says. “It’s such a smooth ride, you can sit there and drink your coffee going through six-foot swells,” he proudly told Bloomberg Businessweek in 2014.
But there’s a problem: The Pentagon doesn’t want Sancoff’s boat—and also won’t let him sell it abroad.

Long-range projectiles for Navy’s newest ship too expensive to shoot
http://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2016/11/long-range-projectiles-for-navys-newest-ship-too-expensive-to-shoot/
Defense News reports that the Navy is canceling production of the LRLAP because of an $800,000-per-shot price tag—more than 10 times the original projected cost. By comparison, the nuclear-capable Tomahawk cruise missile costs approximately $1 million per shot, while the M712 Copperhead laser-guided 155-millimeter projectile and M982 Excalibur GPS-guided rounds cost less than $70,000 per shot. Traditional Navy 5-inch shells cost no more than a few hundred dollars each.

Navy's Ship of the Future Stuck in Panama Canal.
The ship lost propulsion in its port shaft during the transit and the crew saw water intrusion in two of the four bearings that connect to Zumwalt’s port and starboard Advanced Induction Motors (AIMs) to the drive shafts, a defense official told USNI News on Tuesday. The AIMs are the massive electrical motors that are driven by the ship’s gas turbines and in turn electrically power the ship’s systems and drive the shafts.
Both of the shafts locked during the passage and the transit had to be completed with tugs. The ship made minor contact with lock walls in the canal resulting in minor cosmetic damage. Following the transit, the Navy determined the ship couldn’t continue to its new homeport at Naval Station San Diego without additional repairs.

I'm going to hazard a guess that this was an epic maintenance foul up but a B-52 lost an engine today in North Dakota. Not the engine failed, the engine left the aircraft, somehow ejected from the nacelle. Just one engine even though they are mounted in pairs. They sent out a helicopter and it located whatever was left of the engine. The plane landed fine. Never heard of an engine dismounting from the nacelle before.
