After about ten years of not having a turn-table, a buddy of mine threw Sgt Peppers on his and cranked it to 11. It sounded so f'n good I couldn't believe it! the noise, the distortion, the 'liveness' of it was out of this world. It brought back the memories of the huge debates when CD hit the market big and everyone complained how cold they sounded. Well, they do. :)

This post hits me right here.... Someone else has vinyl? Oh yeah, can you tell my wife we are normal? Can you tell my family? Just yesterday when I was having a really shite day I commented that to calm down I needed to "touch" some of my vinyl to chill out. CDs are great but vinyl........shudder, ya gotta love it.

Got a new PC last year and got a Creative Audigy soundcard to transfer my collection over. The guy selling the PC said it was overkill but I know better. ;)

RusH, mate you just made my day! Thanks.

There is no such thing as overkill, its called 'part replacement lengthening'

At $139 it's downright affordable. Does anyone know anything about these things? Like the quality for starters.

If I could piss away $20K, I'd go for it. I have a ton of vinyl I'm dying to hear again, but my turntable has been disfunctional for years.

I bought a pristine vinyl of a rare Jimi Hendrix album on ebay a couple years ago, "Hendrix in the West", to replace my well worn 20+ year old original. The album was an import (not bootleg), and was never converted to CD. Can you believe that I still haven't tried to repair my old turntable and listen to it? Sux...

Straying off topic, sorry, if you are a Hendrix fan, you must try to find this somewhere, even if it is on vinyl. It is all from live performances when Jimi was at his peak. "Johnny B. Goode" in the Berlely Colleseum, a fricking awesome performance of "Little Wing" and "Blue Suede Shoes", and the best rendition of "Red House" that I've heard. Damn... I gotta fix that stupid turntable.

Trivia question: When was the first time the Sergeant Pepper intro song was heard in public?

Answer: Isle of Wight Festival (don't know the date, but I could look it up), played by the Jimi Hendrix Experience before the famous Beatles album was released for sale. Yes, it's true.

I have a Technics stereo system that has been in storage for a year while we have done a house renno. Man it's killing me. My wife says "no way is that dinosaur coming back into this lounge" so I say "right, it's going into the bedroom then." :) I had a Technics Led light turntable but it crapped out. This newish (10 year old) belt driven one is ok but you do hear the belts groaning. Thankfully it's not picked up with the soundcard.

Oh Lizzerd, that guy was a Legend mate. Check out www.sortmusic.com . Found this (http://www.sortmusic.com/_j/jimi-hendrix-discography,a58,len.html) Is that the one you were meaning? I have one of Jimi's LPs that I paid $7.50 for back in the 70s going for $50 in a second hand shop a few years back. I was excited, my wife thought it was tatty but as my copy is in good nick.... ;)

Anyway, if you do ever get that Album out I would love a copy mate. Obviously I'd send you a few bucks but if you can fork out 20000 Presidents...lol.

Anyway, WipeThe Sweat, I, II and III. I gotta get that collection back in the house.

Take care, Rusty.

In the West was a early 70's release I think and was when Alan Douglas was in charge of the recordings. It was legit. As for your Trivia question the first part is right but the rest is wrong. It was at Jimi's early June 1967 Saville concert that he opened up with Sgt Pepper which of course was released something like two days before. The Isle of Wight Festival was three years later, the last weekend of August, 1970, just over two weeks before Hendrix's untimely demise on 18 Sept, and a week before his final show in Germany at the Isle of Fehrman on 6 Sept. The Beatles had already broken up several months before the Isle of Wight show. I just went on a Hendrix kick rereading John McDermott and Eddie Kramer's excellent book "Hendrix Setting the Record Straight" and listening to all of my Hendrix albums. Great Stuff.

There's no question the sound of vinyl is better. I remember getting Perfect Strangers by Deep Purple on CD about ten years ago after having it when it came out in 1984 on vinyl. The Hammond Organ sound was noticebly tinnier and the overall sound was just not as warm.

I sold my extensive vinyl collection around 15 years ago. Too bad something like this wasn't available back then, it could've helped save the industry. Now it'll be a very expensive novelty item and god forbid if the thing breaks after the company goes out of business. Nobody will know how to fix the thing nor be able to get parts.

Let us know how that works out for you RusH.

$135's a whole lot cheaper than otherwise replacing my vinyl now that everything is going iPod.

I've got older vinyl (like a bunch of original Doors, LA Woman with the cellophane, etc.) and some newer stuff (Clinic, Yo La Tango, ... Trail of Dead, Shellac, etc.) that I'd like to put on my iPod. And the 7"s too...

Still have my turntable hooked up in the garage, so I can listen to the vinyl while in the cave.

I bought a bunch of vinyl for my 30th birthday...made tapes to play outside in the garage, which we'd turned into a pit garage complete with a hot tub. Later bought a SONY turntable at a garage sale for $10. Unfortunately the needle got broken while in storage during house renovations. Probably cheaper to find another turntable at another garage sale than try to replace the needle.

Turntable's are still available.

But why would you want to record that horrible crackling, hissing and popping to a digital format? and yes, I have lots of old vinyl.

When I played Sabbath`s Sweat Leaf without the hiss and crackle it was not the same.
I just don`t know why. ;)

There are peer to peer sharing of vinyl MP3`s. As long as the POPS are kept almost zero they are nice to listen to.

As far as why this is a good thing, I have tons of stuff I will never find on MP3. Bootlegs etc that I would love to listen to again.

Stay away from the ION, get a Technics, you'll never need another Turntable! Also Radio Shack has replacement stylus, fairly inexpensively.

If you have never heard good vinyl played through a low powered tube amp and a good set of speakers, you owe it to yourself. Most areas have at least one good analog store where they can spin some sides for you. If you're old enough to remember how it sounds, they you already know.

One affordable option for those with vinyl lust is one of the good basic MDF slab turnables that are available. Sumiko imports the Pro-Ject turntable from Europe which comes with an Ortofon OM 5E cartridge and it will sound miles better than any of the legacy stuff gathering dust in the closet all for $279. It's got a decent tonearm and will have your vinyl playing again in no time provided you have a phono input on your receiver or amp. If not, there are affordable phono stages at Needledoctor as well.
Pro-Ject Debut III (http://www.needledoctor.com/s.nl/sc.2/category.352/it.A/id.3358/.f)

Now for the hiss & pop cure. A good manual record cleaner is something to seriously consider using before subjecting a new cartridge to old vinyl. Price aside, I prefer the manual cleaners for records that haven't been thoroughly cleaned before. Good vinyl is as quite as a CD, so clean the gunk out and it will kill the static as well.

Exactly!!! Good analog is far superior to CDs, MP3s, I-pods, etc.

I have a rather large collection of vinyl, and use a nitty gritty (http://www.needledoctor.com/s.nl/sc.2/category.106/.f) regularly. It's amazing how great clean vinyl sounds!

I'm a Linn LP12 owner (http://www.linn.co.uk/spec_sound/product_display.cfm?ProductID=6&activeNavBar=products&activeSubNavBar=source&CFID=2982556&CFTOKEN=68218277) , and love it! It's still being made, and any Linn dealer would be more than happy to give you a demo. Linn also makes incredible sounding amps, pre-amps, speakers, etc., but an LP12 played through inexpensive electronics and cheap speakers can sound amazing.

Besides the pro-ject, another great budget 'table is the Planer 3 from Rega (http://www.rega.co.uk/index2.htm) . I've got one set up in my workshop; it's used nearly every day.

VPI makes great turntables too (http://www.vpiindustries.com/index.htm) , as well as a highly regarded record cleaner.

New vinyl is still being pressed, and some "record" stores are selling them again. There are a few good on-line shops including Acoustic Sounds (http://store.acousticsounds.com/vinyl-record.cfm) and Elusive Disc (http://www.elusivedisc.com/).

There are other on-line LP stores that a Google search will lead you too. I've bought most of mine at used record stores and garage sales. Of course, there's always Ebay.

Happy listening!!

Anyways, seeing as how I'm half a world away and have a wife who wouldn't let me fork out $US300 for a cleaner what's the "next best thing" for cleaning my records?

Cheers, Rusty.

Thank you!

Before I bought my Nitty Gritty machine, I used Orbitrac from Allsop (http://www.needledoctor.com/s.nl/sc.2/category.108/it.A/id.756/.f), and a Hunt Brush (http://www.needledoctor.com/s.nl/sc.2/category.1177/it.A/id.767/.f). Both are pretty decent, but If you can ever spend the bucks on a wet vacuum machine such as a Nitty Gritty or VPI, you'll be astounded by the improvement in sound!
